Council, this year’s festival includes a multimedia exhibition, involving guest artists from around the country. Most of the exhibited work is for sale and gives locals the chance to snap up works from nationally renowned artists.

Other popular events are Shakespeare in the Park at the Riverbank Amphitheatre and Jazz in the Park in the Whakatane Rose Gardens.

The Summer Arts Festival runs until March. Programmes are available at Whakatane i-Site and local retailers.

Nicola KimptonNicola is a spiritual writer whose passion is to promote greater health, peace, love, joy and connection. Born in Nottingham, England, she worked as a teacher and personal assistant before her sense of adventure lured her to Whakatane in 2005. She then pursued her interest in writing and was the inaugural recipient of the Kingi McKinnon scholarship for emerging writers in 2007.

Nicola’s stories and poetry have been published in national and international publications, and her articles feature in a variety of spiritual, health and lifestyle magazines.

When not writing, she enjoys walking in nature, reading, drawing, painting and digital art. She lives in Ohope with her partner Dave.

Jim Robinson Sports writer Jim is, in his words, addicted to multisport. He has competed in many endurance sport events, including the Coast to Coast, Tarawera Ultramarathon, Motu Challenge, Brasilia Multisport (in Brazil), Monty’s Revenge, and - going back a few years - Tour of Wellington Cycle Classic stage race (five times).

“I love the challenge of pushing yourself - it’s in the blood,” he says.

He lives on a 2ha lifestyle block near Ohiwa harbour, with book illustrator and writer Nikki Slade-Robinson and their two daughters, Maria and Sophie.

As well as advertising and corporate work, Jim writes for various magazines including North & South and vo2max, and won a Qantas media award (best health and medicine feature) in 2008.

Winsome MitchellWinsome started writing in 1998, after becoming a grandmother six times over. She says she always knew she’d write one day.

She began by dabbling in fiction with some success and, after completing Massey University’s Biography course in 2002, started focusing on creative non-fiction, where she found her niche.

Winsome and her husband Jim spent 40 years farming at Waimana but in 2005 moved to a lifestyle block in Awakeri. She belongs to the local Writers’ Group, is president of the Friends of the Library group and says she enjoys reading, tennis and gardening. Spending time with family is a high priority.

John GlasseJohn and his wife Maureen moved to the Eastern Bay with their four children in 1979. They settled on a 600-acre dry stock farm at Nukuhou North. Since then they have pioneered and pastored a church in Edgecumbe and developed one of the first rural/residential blocks in the Eastern Bay.

John writes ‘all sorts of weird and wonderful’ stuff and says he is also kept busy working as an auctioneer for Harcourts in Whakatane and Opotiki. He enjoys trout fishing and messing around in boats with his family.

When 1XX breakfast show host Colin Magee arrives home after a full-on radio session he steps into

another world.

He and his wife Tania have created a spectacular garden that wows all who visit it. Since being invited to visit this Awakeri family’s unique tropical island retreat, I have discovered that, for Colin, this half-acre of private paradise is his hobby, his entertainment, and his dream.

I admit to not knowing what to expect. After all, last time I saw the property it was simply a family home on 2000sq m of grass. The transformation into what Colin calls his Pacific Island hideaway has been positively astounding.

A love for Fiji, Vanuatu, Samoa and the Cook Islands was his inspiration for creating a garden with a distinctive South Sea Island flavour. I can’t mention flavour without highlighting the covered barbecue courtyard where Colin, Tania and their teenage family, the famous Magee quads, enjoy an outdoor eating experience often in keeping with the island theme.

On my arrival, my host seated me at the garden bar, presented me with a refreshing pineapple cocktail, donned his chef ’s hat

and fired up the state-of-the-art barbecue. He serves scrummy salmon crostinis with hollandaise sauce followed by Thai satay chicken kebabs. It’s a far cry from my usual Kiwi barbecue effort of steak and sausages.

The gourmet treats demonstrate Colin’s commitment to his theme while enjoying a relaxed and make-the-most-of-it lifestyle.

I don’t have to shut my eyes to imagine I am on a tropical island; a glance around the garden, with its inimitable ambience showed me it was all there. A profusion of yuccas, bromeliads and established palms provide shelter and privacy. Crushed shell walkways and a boat complete with oars and seagull add reality to the theme and best of all, there isn’t a blade of grass in sight.

Nothing calms the soul like a water feature. Colin has created this effect by incorporating an area with a concreted Koru motif around an impressive, large Easter Island face statue.

The covered eating and outdoor entertainment room is complemented by a private spa pool and strategically placed life-size picture of a romantic Pacific Island beach.

At night, guests are treated to a scene reminiscent of the Survivor television

programme. They are greeted by a row of burning torches. The fire pit is going and Colin is concocting a mouth-watering, healthy Asian meal.

Entertaining is an art and this family has certainly got what it takes. The Magee

children are talented musicians who enjoy entertaining guests with impromptu concerts in their own backyard.

It’s a backyard that deserves to be called a tropical garden hideaway.

Plenty: A celebration of food and lifestyle from the Eastern Bay of Plenty. Compiled by Whakatane West Rotary Club. Reviewed by Justine Southwick. This fantastic book is, as its title suggests, full of recipes that showcase Eastern Bay food and culture. Put together by the Whakatane West Rotary Club, it also includes quirky anecdotes and stunning images supplied by local residents.

There are nearly 100 easy-to-follow recipes, from nibbles and starters to barbecue fare, mains and desserts and – not surprisingly given Whakatane’s seaside location – fish dishes. Highlights for me include mouth-watering delights such as kingfish on chickpea salsa with herb aioli and smoked marlin pasta in a garlic and herb vegetable sauce.

Plenty is an outstanding effort from Rotary and an ideal Christmas present for the chef in any family.

The Day the Raids Came: Stories of survival and resistance to the state terror raids. Edited by Valerie Morse. Reviewed by Winsome Mitchell. This collection of oral history in which 15 people tell their stories about Monday, October 15, 2007, is edited by activist Valerie Morse. It was released in October 2010 to commemorate the third anniversary of the dawn raids carried out by police under the Terrorism Suppression Act.

Early in the book comes the statement that it is ‘bound with hatred for the state infused into every page.’ The reader immediately understands that these stories will be one-sided but, even allowing for this, a disturbing pattern emerges; that of the continuing effects of the terror experienced by children who witnessed the raids.

Youngsters forced to kneel on the pavement with guns to the backs of their heads. Nine- and seven-year-olds cowering on their beds in rooms filled with armed police, their mother restrained from comforting them. A six-year-old left screaming in the van while her grandfather is dragged across the road by men in black; it’s hard to believe that this is our very own Godzone I’m reading about.

In their distinctive voices, those interviewed speak about the continuing effects on kids and mokos such as bed-wetting, nightmares, and fear of sleeping alone. Others refuse to go to school because of bullying.

There are kids who still hide when they see a police car and a family uproots and moves to Waikaremoana to find peace of mind.

Without all the information it’s impossible to know if the raids were justified but, as a New Zealander, I was left feeling sad that innocent children were inadvertently caught up in them.

‘The Day the Raids Came’ can be purchased from Rebel Press or read online at http://www.rebelpress.org.nz/publications.html

Dear Aunt Maggie,My husband’s parents come from the U.K. & stay with us for five weeks every year. Altho’ they bring small gifts for the family they don’t contribute financially & we are finding their visits very expensive. I do everything for them & don’t mind that but they like morning & afternoon tea, milo made with milk, snacks, fruit & drinks before dinner. It all mounts up along with rates, water, power & petrol & takes ages for us to catch up. My husband is too proud to broach the subject.....

Kiwi Inlaw.

Dear Kiwi Inlaw,There will be many empathising with you over the holiday period... You obvously share a good relationship which is important considering they live so far away. He chose to come to NZ for you, but it’s a big loss to them & he won’t be there for them in their later years. Your husband won’t want to admit he is not as wealthy as they may have expected.

Show an interest in the U.K. economy , ask if their rates have risen & how prices compare with ours. Suggest they go to the supermarket with you to look at our foods & when they offer to help send them to the dairy for milk & bread. Prepare for their visit by buying meat specials & freezing them. There are excellent wines on special at $10 you can put aside.

Suggest they may like to see another part of the country for a few days, give them a timetable- there are great views from our bus windows - this will save you some petrol costs.

Tell his mother your husband misses her special dishes & would she like to do one of his favourite meals once a week. Many English people are reserved & she may feel uncomfortable about encroaching on your kitchen space. Enjoy their visit- they won’t be forever.. Maggie.

The Great Bloke’s BBQ cookbookby Kim Terakes This book is a must for any bloke who’s ever wanted to add something extra to his barbecue cooking.

The recipes are easy to follow, with the book including new takes on old favourites such as fillet mignon and dishes new to the barbecue scene, such as Thai beef salad.

Author Kim Terakes, a food writer since the late 1980s, also shows readers how to create tasty starters, salads and desserts that perfectly complement any barbecue main.

It’s a great gift idea for the man in your life this Christmas.

Tasman Trespasser II: The Shaun Quincey Storyby Shaun QuinceyI had the pleasure of meeting this amazing man a couple of weeks ago. I don’t normally read about sporting things but hearing Shaun talk about his trip made me want to read his story. What an amazing story it is.

It is November 2008 and Shaun is swimming 2.8km in Auckland harbour. He is bored. He starts thinking about what he can do that doesn’t involve working 9am-5pm, and he decides to row the Tasman Sea from Australia to New Zealand.

This idea didn’t come from nowhere, because back in 1977 Shaun’s father, Colin Quincey, also rowed the Tasman Sea.

In his book, Shaun takes readers through his incredible journey, from deciding to row the Tasman to building the boat and getting sponsorship for the trip. He shows how, with determination and maybe a bit of madness, you can achieve something amazing.

I can’t wait to see what is next for Shaun Quincey, as I don’t think we have heard the last of this man.

A Tiny Bit Marvellous by Dawn FrenchHaving seen Dawn French on TV and loved her, I expected great things from this book. It didn’t disappoint.

Her characters are so full of personality they all but leap off the page. It’s written in diary format with each character putting a viewpoint forward; this could easily confuse the reader but instead keeps the book moving at a lively pace. One never knows what will happen next. A highly entertaining read.

Fortune Cookieby Bryce Courtenay Once again Bryce has a stunner in time for summer. Fortune Cookie is a love story set against the wretched trade in drugs and human misery operating during the Vietnam War.

Simon Koo is an ambitious Australian-born Chinese man who goes to Singapore in the mid-60s to work for advertising agency Samuel Oswald Wing Brothers.

The Wing brothers, who run the agency, are not what they seem. There is soon trouble when Simon falls in love with the forbidden Mercy B Lord, the illegitimate daughter of a Japanese officer and a Chinese mother who abandoned her on the doorstep of a Catholic orphanage.

With no family or connections, this beautiful young woman is powerless to resist the evil influence of Beatrice Fong.

I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.

No matter how idealistically stimulating it sounds to up sticks and head to the great outdoors, take it

from me. It isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

To leave the comforts of civilisation to live under canvas and savour the delights of ‘roughing it’ is madness in the extreme. I should know.

I have been man against wild. I have lain on my back in the middle of a cold and blustery night, staring up at the stars, wondering where the tent has gone.

I have squeezed through a tent flap into the cold forbidding night, like Captain Oats of the Antarctic, whispering to my wife that I am going for a short walk. Dressed only in my pyjamas, Swanndri, tracksuit and beanie I have fumbled through a dark wooded area, wishing that I had not drunk so much the night before. It was foolish to venture barefoot into uncharted territory. I managed

to tread upon the only nodding thistle within a 5sq m radius and I discovered that at night small but sturdy, pointy tree branches move surreptitiously from the upper part of a tree to groin level.

My definition of camping is ‘learning to stay alive in a hostile environment’. The adventure stories, tales of daring and books about the great outdoors fail to mention that the number of giant sand flies in any given location is dependent on whether you remembered the Dimp.

Who could forget our summer holiday at Hahei in the Coromandel? We wanted a good night’s sleep so bought the best double blow-up mattress we could find. I pumped it up and the kids, the dog and I jumped up and down on it. Having had an exhausting first day, we went to bed at 8.30pm. By 9.15 we were on the floor. I had to pump it up again. I pumped that bloomin’ mattress up

six times in the night. Goodness knows what the neighbouring campers thought about the noise emanating from our tent. By morning we were all deflated.

Then there was the piece de résistance, the final curtain to camping holidays. Waihau Bay camping ground produced the wettest two weeks on record and we were in the middle of it. Everything was damp. We awoke in the middle of the night suffering from a

lack of oxygen. It felt like a giant hippo was sitting on our faces. “Get off, John,” my wife gasped.

It turned out to be rain water. A huge reservoir filled the roof of our tent and threatened to engulf us. We heaved it into the air, spilling gallons on the neighbouring campers.

Camping? Never again.

John Glasse has a word of advice for anyone contemplating a camping holiday this summer - don’t.

The ‘joys’ of roughing it

If all your neighbours have flourishing vegetable gardens but you haven’t even started, don’t throw your tools down

in desperation just yet. You have months of growing time ahead of you and in fact, you can grow your own food year-round if you want to.

At this time of year, begin with seedlings for summer crops and plan to grow your winter crops from seed when you are more organised. The gardening shops have loads of different seedlings just waiting for you to give them a good home.

Choose the spot on your section that has at least six hours of sun a day. It’s best to start small and extend as your confidence grows. Invest in a couple of bags of cheap compost and spread it thickly, then while you are deciding what to plant, sow radish seeds directly into the soil. They will be ready to eat in 30 days and they will kick start your gardening passion. Once you’ve eaten your first crop, you will be hooked.

This year, my vege gardening has been done

when I’ve had 10 minutes to spare between other jobs. Luckily it doesn’t take a lot of time or energy to grow enough veges to feed the family. The secret is to spend a few minutes on it every day.

In just 10 minutes you can pull a few weeds, find the snail that is attacking your lettuces, admire the growth on your beans and water everything. It’s a good idea to grow your favourites so that you can see the results on the table, as well as in your shopping bill. Broccoli, tomatoes, beans and beetroot can all still be grown now and will last you well into autumn.

If you have room for a couple of courgette plants, pop them in too, because they are so easy to grow. Just plant them and come back in late February to harvest them. Fill in the gaps with lots of lettuces and rocket for summer salads, and more radishes. Forget about planting in rows - it’s a waste of good growing space and tidy gardens are a thing of the past. Snuggle a couple of nasturtiums in among the vege plants and they will reward you with a delightful show of bright blooms,

while also attracting the good bugs into your garden. Plant your lettuces under your taller broccoli for shade, feed well and water

everything regularly. Then stand back and prepare to be amazed.

Enjoy summer gardening – but think ahead

Kaye Blaker comes from a long line of keen gardeners and has a particular passion for growing food. Using basic permaculture methods, and with the help of five chickens and three sheep as part of the working team, she feeds several people from her vege garden year-round.

There’s nothing Kaye enjoys more than encouraging new gardeners to give it a go. Her column will feature all sorts of helpful tips for beginners and existing gardening enthusiasts.

At some point, most of us worry about what other people think or we look outside ourselves for approval. Yet

this leads to feelings of failure and causes stress and anxiety. Thankfully, there is a healthier way to find approval, and that is to give it to ourselves.Sometimes, this can seem like a challenge. When faced with our perceived shortcomings it’s easy to slip into self-judgement. But this is not the solution. Instead, we need to give ourselves self-love and approval. When we love ourselves, we free ourselves from restrictive beliefs and open up to new joy and experiences. So here are some ways to start loving yourself.

The real youSome people are chatty while others are quiet. All are equally valuable. Yet society’s expectations and the roles we play can leave us confused about who we really are. To identify your true nature, work out when you feel joyful, relaxed and happy. This might be

entertaining others, being alone outdoors or being creative. The joy you feel in these moments is the experience of being the real you and is the key to greater self love and acceptance. The more you know who you really are, the more authentic and confident you can be.

Says who?Identify where critical thoughts come from. Are you holding on to other people’s beliefs or negative comments made about you in childhood? Either way, ask yourself if this is true for you now. If not, choose a new truth that empowers you. Affirmations can help. Turn negative statements into positive ones. For example, if you were told you were no good with money, say ‘I now manage my finances well.’ Post your affirmations where you can see them and repeat them often. It takes practice but is worth the effort.

Focus on your strengthsFocusing upon your weaknesses draws attention away from your natural gifts. Instead, focus upon your strengths. What are you good at? What do you enjoy doing? Celebrate your talents and aim to include more of them in your life. The more you focus on your strengths, the more they flourish, along with your confidence.

Give to othersA great way to break the cycle of self-criticism is to use your skills to help others. If you’re a good listener, you could offer someone a coffee or a chat. If you’re great with animals, you could assist the SCPA or an animal cause. If you love nature, you could pick up litter as you go about your walk. There are many ways to help, even a kind word or gesture will be appreciated by others and will boost your self-esteem.

Self-improvementYou don’t need to change yourself to be more like others. However, if there are healthy changes you wish to make, approach these with patience and compassion. Beating yourself up as motivation doesn’t help. Instead, be positive and set reasonable achievable goals. This way you’ll feel good and be more likely to succeed.

Be good to yourselfMake sure you’re getting enough rest, sleep, nutrition, exercise etc. And treat yourself; this can have powerful effects.

Embracing ourselves is not a selfish endeavour. It’s the opposite. Loving ourselves is healing and empowering. And when we love ourselves, we naturally extend our love and acceptance out to others. So give yourself a hug right now. It’s a new year and you deserve it.

It’s a new year and what better time to redefine what makes you happy? Nicola Kimpton has some advice on how to start.

Learn to love yourself

Sandwiches. As in anything and everything into one. Take our habit of putting a loaf of bread and half the contents of the fridge onto the table for lunch. Overseas visitors look on horrified as we pile 12 ingredients between two bits of bread and then attempt to fit it in our mouth. French visitors, in particular, who are the masters of 1-3 ingredient meals, think we are nuts. Until they try avocado, egg, mayo, tomato, vegemite, lettuce, rocket, peppers, ham and hummus on Vogel bread.

Chooks.Despite local body bylaws, you’d be surprised who has a couple of chooks tucked away in their back yard. New Zealanders can turn anything into a deluxe apartment for hens: 44 gallon drums, dog kennels, old whiteware, wardrobes and anything that slots into the undergrowth and is not easily detected by the neighbours. Hint: resist the urge to have a rooster or it’s all over.

The resource trip to the beach. A swim? Probably, but only after collecting a bag of seaweed for the garden, shells for a mobile, driftwood for the fire, a bit of sand to top up the kids’ sandpit, and maybe a few pipis for dinner. Now that’s a great Kiwi afternoon.

Knowing a relative or neighbour of pretty much any other New Zealander we meet. That guy who just won a gold medal is my ex-dentist’s son. This, of course, means I know him personally and is really good for impressing overseas visitors.

Watching anything made in New Zealand. From the days of Puke Manu and helped along by Peter Jackson, New Zealand productions are now eagerly awaited and attended. I reckon it’s partly because we are likely to see someone we know or even ourselves on screen. At the very least we will recognise a landmark or be able to hum along to the background music.

Trade Me.

Oh come on, admit it. How did we ever live without it? Apart from being a brilliant idea and being largely responsible for saving many of our Kiwi icons from the landfill, it is a hugely entertaining site if you read the questions and answers. Even the hike in success fees hasn’t stopped me. Guess where I got my chooks?

Through the eyes of overseas visitors Kaye Blaker realises how big a part Kiwi traditions play in our lives. She shares some common ones.

Great Kiwi traditions Angi says dyslexia is often thought of as difficulty with

literacy experienced by intelligent people, but it is more than that. “It is an alternative way of thinking

that enables individuals to view the world from many different perspectives and in creative ways. It can affect a range of areas including literacy and numeracy, motor skills, organisation and processing difficulties.

“Some of these can make it especially challenging for individuals to follow multiple instructions, turn thoughts into words and finish work on time. They have a significant impact on a person’s life. The resulting sense of frustration and negative emotional reactions leads to low self esteem and coping solutions such as being the class clown, day dreaming and dependence on others,” she says.

An estimated one in 10 people in New Zealand are dyslexic, including 70,000 children.

The Davis approach to working with dyslexia is based on the principles that dyslexic strengths and weaknesses share the same root - the dyslexic thinking style. Some educators still focus on what people with dyslexia can’t do: process sounds of letters and words and try to get them to do it through repetition and drill. But Davis facilitators focus on what people with dyslexia can do: think in three-dimensional images and use this natural talent to help them learn.

There are more than 400 licensed facilitators worldwide, offering programmes in 40 countries and 30 languages. Since 1982 thousands of people from around the world have completed a Davis programme, with a 97 percent success rate in helping their clients reach their learning goal. All programmes are tailored to the individual and are one-on-one. They usually run for a minimum of 30 hours over five or more consecutive days.

Angi offers free assessments and consultations with no obligation. Phone (07) 308 6882 or email [email protected]

A beautiful combination Come and watch the thrills and spills

when truck drivers from around New Zealand gather to battle each

other in muddy and rough terrain.Round three of the national 4x4 rally series officially kicks off on January 29, when the trucks are is put through a series of safety checks before being put on public display. The action itself starts at 8.30am on January 30, with each truck being driven through a number of hazards that may involve mud and rolls.

The Eastern Bay Twin Diff Club (EBTDC) is again arranging the national event, with the support of five Matata organisations that will benefit from proceeds. First Response, Blue Light, the Fire Brigade, St Josephs and Matata Public School are all working together to gain maximum exposure and profits. Firefighter Brian Dobson says it is exciting to be involved. “It’s a national event so it is great to bring it to the local organisations.”

He says all the groups involved benefit the

small Matata community. “First Response is first at an accident and stays until an ambulance can arrive from Whakatane. A lot of our fire brigade members are involved in first response too. And there are the schools and Blue Light [helping the children].”

The national 4x4 trial event is also being supported by many local businesses, which sponsor hazards and donate prizes. Debbie Sturme, one of the organisers, says this support is invaluable for running the event and ensuring maximum profit is made for the community organisations chosen.

“We really appreciate the kindness of Eastern Bay businesses to make the trial a success.”

Among the expected 80-odd drivers are local teams, ranging in skill level from novice to class titleholders. Top local drivers and navigators include defending E-class champion Pierre Le Lievre and co-driver Rhys O’Brien and Ernie Schicker and Grant Schuler. Other local teams to watch will be Paul Taylor and Carl Martin, Wayne and Jude Weatherly and Gary West and Antony

Weatherley from the F-class, and A-class teams Warwick Farmer and Richard Tibby, Clarrie and John Vazey and Graham Mayes and Tony Jump.

Drivers and their support crews travel from all around New Zealand to compete.

The national 4wd rally season runs from each Labour weekend until Easter the following year, and comprises six events across the country. A typical trial involves around 30 various pegged and numbered hazards that include driving up hills, through mud and across banks to test drivers’ capabilities. There are a couple of speed obstacles thrown into the day but mostly the hazards are graded, which means that the further the truck drives through the hazard, the better - although the aim of the day is to gain the lowest score.

The event will be on January 30, from 8.30am - 4pm, at the end of Pokerekere Rd (off Manawahe Road in Awakaponga). Adults $10, families $20. Food and drink will be available on site.

Truckies show off speed and skillThe Eastern Bay will be filled with the sound of roaring engines this month as New Zealand’s top trucks arrive for round three of the national 4x4 rally series.

Bay People

Local schools and people impress newcomersPaul and Jane Osborne came to Whakatane for a better lifestyle. They tell Winsome Mitchell they are enjoying the relaxed pace.

Everyone here is a little more relaxed, a little more chilled-out,” say new Eastern Bay residents Paul and Jane

Osborne

“Where else can you go into a shop and the mayor serves you, has a chat, and welcomes you to the town?”

The Osbornes moved here from Nottingham, England around three months ago. They wanted more from life than they were experiencing in the UK, especially for their children –Jonathan, 14, Annabelle, 12, and Alex, six.

“It was getting aggressive and busy on the roads,” Paul says. “There was often trouble in the city, and we were worried about break-ins. We’d had two already and the people were caught on CCTV but the police just didn’t bother (doing anything). We thought enough was enough. We’d already seen Whakatane when we visited friends in 2008 and the attempted break-ins were enough to tip us over.”

The children weren’t so keen.

“Jonathan wanted to stay with his grandparents, but he’d only been at school one day when he came home and said he loved it here,” Jane says. “All three of them want to stay”

The Osbornes are impressed with the standard of education and student involvement at their respective schools. “I love it that the kids sing

the national anthem and that the assemblies at Ohope School are student-led,” Jane says. “Back home the head or the deputy runs the assembly and the kids don’t say a thing.”

All three children are doing well in school. Alex has already doubled his level in reading. “That’s the reason we made an executive decision and decided that we’re not going out of town. We’ll just wait for work here,” Paul says.

A qualified electrician who had his own electrical and security business in the UK, Paul has struggled to find work locally. “The problem is that I only have a provisional licence here and have to be supervised until I pass a test on New Zealand regulations.”

A two-week course begins in Rotorua shortly, and in a show of faith, Paul has been offered employment by a local firm when it’s finished. Jane worked for Lloyd’s bank and will soon start looking for something part-time.

Paul confesses to the odd down day when he misses parents and family, but says that Skype is good. Jane misses the theatre but loves our café culture. They both wish the exchange rate was more favourable, the sand flies drive them crazy and the price of paint is staggering. “We went to buy a pot of paint and it was like, wow. Back home it’s only a fraction of the price,” Jane says.

“On the other hand, people are fantastic. You go into the stationers and get talking to people. You come out 30 minutes later and you only

went in for a pen.

“Another thing that was really lovely was that we bought a new car and hadn’t transferred enough money from the UK. We only paid half the amount but they said just bring it in next week sometime. There’s no way we’d get that at home.”

Paul too, is blown away that strangers go out of their way to help. “We told the headmaster at the intermediate school that we were going

to Auckland for job interviews. ‘Oh no,’ he said, ‘we don’t want to lose you’. He had two interviews arranged with local firms for that afternoon.”

The family intends buying a house if everything works out but will look at different areas of Whakatane first. With their positive and optimistic attitude it’s hard to imagine things not working out. “If it doesn’t,” Paul says, “then the worst that can happen is that we’ve had a very expensive holiday.”

A year ago, Sam Clark put in weeks of off-road running, white-water kayaking and cycling in preparation

for the world championship of multisport - the mighty Speight’s Coast to Coast longest day. He travelled to the South Island two weeks before race day. He did multiple training efforts over the 33km Southern Alpine run and 67km Waimakariri River paddle. He was in peak form and seeking a top 10 finish. But the weather conspired against him. At 3am on race day a storm hit the West Coast. It was a weather bomb, an intense low bringing more than 50mm of rain an hour. The region’s rivers were in flood almost immediately. So, instead of the rocky mountain run and white-water paddle, the race featured 34km of road running, 205km of road cycling and a 19km kayak down the shallow, weed-infested Avon River.

Sam’s strengths are running over rough terrain, and kayaking. His hopes of a top finish flooded away like the torrents. He finished 14th. “I’d been doing a lot of kayaking so to have it stripped away like that was pretty gutting,” he reflects. “Actually, it was a bit of an adventure. It was quite good to be part of ‘the weather bomb’ year.” Roll on December 2010, and Sam was again putting in long paddles and tackling raging white-water. He’s been running up Mt Edgecumbe and along Whakatane’s Toi’s track, and cycling up to 160km at a stretch. He’s also bought a K1, an extremely fast flat-water racing kayak. “I’d like to do some [kayak racing] regattas and improve my technique.” So what are his goals for the Coast? “I’m gunning for top 10,” he says. Sam is only 20 years old. He trains before and after work, often for hours. For a couple of

years he’s been closing in on the real guns of the sport. His first major breakthrough was in February 2009, when he won the men’s open section of the two-day Coast to Coast, at 18 years old. The Motu Challenge in October 2010 was another leap; Sam placed third overall. In November, Sam was second in the Toi’s Challenge and, a week later, third at the Lake to Lighthouse Challenge, which features a huge 46km run around Lake Waikaremoana. Whakatane’s Neil Jones, who won the Coast to Coast in 1996, reckons Sam is a strong prospect for the future. “His biking and particularly kayaking have really come on as he has fine-tuned his skills and taken advantage of his increasing power,” Neil says. “Sam has plenty of time to be patient, to continue to build experience, endurance and strength. When he knows the time is right he can make the step up to the training needed to

go all the way to the top.” So why multisport? What’s the appeal of thrashing yourself in epic races such as the 243 km Coast to Coast? Why go paddle training in places you can easily - as Sam did a year ago - snap a kayak in half like a cracker? “It’s good to be able to think - I can do something different today [in training]. You can say ‘I want to go for a paddle around that island,’ and just go and do it. It’s not regimented like other sports. And multisport people are really friendly. They’re not too intense,” he says. Sam plans to carry on for a few years, perhaps eventually moving into adventure racing. But first is the 2011 Coast. He grins. “The weather should be good. The race has only been changed twice in 28 years because of the weather.” And longer term? “It’s definitely a goal to win it.”

SPECSAVERS SMASHES THE PRICE OF GLASSES IN WHAKATANE

SPECSAVERS DRIVES A PRICE REVOLUTION“I’ve been involved with Specsavers in the UK since 1995, and an Optometrist Director with the company since 2005. Since joining forces with Specsavers in Whakatane, I’ve been able to offer customers two complete pairs of glasses – including lenses – for less than what people in New Zealand have been paying for a single pair,” he said.

“These savings are possible because of the enormous buying power of a company the size of Specsavers. I can now offer a complete pair of glasses from $79 and my two pairs for one price offer starts at $199. This is the kind of value that is going to force our competitors to re-evaluate their own prices. And this also enables Whakatane customers to have excellent quality products and service at more affordable prices.”

NO COMPROMISE ON QUALITYMr Brenton-Rule, a Bay of Plenty local for the last seven years, said lower prices did not mean lower quality products.

“I’ve been working in the NZ optical industry for over 24 years and I’m pleased to tell customers that what we’re offering at Specsavers is great value – and there’s a big difference between a good value product and a cheap product. We provide the highest quality glasses, including a range of well-known designer brands like fcuk vision, Karen Millen, Roxy and Tommy Hilfiger for much less than you would normally expect to pay. And all glasses in our store come with PENTAX lenses and a scratch resistant coating, included in the price as standard. It’s outstanding value.”

As a result of the two-for-one offer, which is always available on all glasses priced at $199 and above, in all Specsavers stores, Mr Brenton-Rule said he fully expected to see residents around the Whakatane area looking more stylish than ever.

“I believe that people should be able to have more than one great looking pair of glasses in their wardrobe, just like they have more than one pair of shoes. But in the past, the cost often made that unaffordable,” he said.

“Well not anymore.”

“At Specsavers people can now afford to buy really good quality, fashionable frames to update their look. And our two-for-one offer means you can get a smart pair for the office and another style for the weekend, all for one low price. With over 1000 frames to choose from in store, we’d have a pair to suit everyone!”

CLEAR PRICES – NO SURPRISES AT THE TILLThe store at Whakatane has been designed so that customers will know exactly what they have to pay before they get to the till. All of the glasses are laid out with clear prices that include the cost of single vision lenses – which is a first in New Zealand.

Local Specsavers Optometrist David Anderson and dispensing Optician David Brenton-Rule are helping to revolutionise the cost of eyecare in New Zealand. Along with Mr Anderson’s fiancée Wendy, who also works at the store, the two Davids are bringing much-needed competition to a sector that has traditionally been able to name its price.

“Together with our two dogs, Wendy and I have moved from the UK to make New Zealand our home, and are really excited at the opportunity to become part of a revolution that is bringing the price of glasses down for everyday Kiwis,” Mr Anderson said.

“New Zealand has suffered from a lack of competition in optics for many years, which allowed prices to creep up and stay high. But Specsavers has given the industry a

shake-up and there’s no doubt prices are coming down as a result.”

“You might accept not knowing what you’re going to pay upfront from your dentist, but why should that be the case when you need a new pair of specs?” said Mr Anderson. “Those days are over. At Specsavers, we believe it should be easy to compare prices and you should know exactly what you’ll get, up front. That’s what our Clear Price philosophy is all about. Our products also come with a two year guarantee which means that people can feel secure that their glasses will stand the test of time.”

PROFESSIONAL TESTING AND CARENew Zealand health guidelines recommend that everyone, including children, have an eye test every two years, regardless of whether or not you wear glasses.

“Our optometrist will perform a thorough eye health check which includes tests for problems like glaucoma, macular degeneration and cataracts,” Mr Anderson said.

“Eye tests are quick and painless with bulk billing available. My team and I are committed to providing the highest quality eyecare, as well as offering the most affordable, quality eyewear to the community. If you’re overdue for an eye test or are just considering updating your look, drop in and see us.”

Saltwater fishing reportwith Ian Davie

A great form of therapy

There is nothing quite like fishing. After casting out my baits I sit on a driftwood log and am serenaded by a skylark as it

climbs to dizzy heights before parachuting back to ground. I enter a state close to meditation. I am relaxed and my mind wanders freely, but I’m still acutely aware of any movement of the rod tip and ready to react instantly if need be.Fishing is a kind of therapy and, to me, the best way of winding down. There are plenty of snapper and fish in general around our shores at present, but the boost in numbers does include many small fish. A recent fishing trip produced eight snapper but all were returned. The three good-sized trevally I brought home more than made up for the smaller-than-usual snapper. There are also good numbers of kingfish around and I have heard reports of numerous hook-ups, but not many making it to the shore or boat. It always pays to carry a spare spool of heavier line and a couple of kingfish rigs, just in case an opportunity presents itself. My new adventure into kayak fishing has begun. So far the Prowler Ultra 4.7 is all I could wish for in a fishing kayak. My initial exploits have been around Ohope and primarily in the harbour, to

gain confidence and familiarity with using the kayak. I had a head start with the fishing set-up, including much input from Rob Fort who has years of experience as a professional kayak fishing and diving guide. Everything has its place and is strapped or leashed to the kayak just in case you tip over.

Having said that, the Ultra is a stable platform and it would take an error of judgement to send you for a premature swim. The snapper, trevally and kahawai have been plentiful on these initial outings, but nothing has had me reaching for the camera yet.Without a doubt kayak fishing gives you much more scope with areas to fish, has minimal amount of maintenance and few running costs. Plus it keeps you fit and you can sneak up on fish.

Local man Ian Davie has been a passionate fisherman since he was four. He started catching coarse fish and progressed to salmon and trout before turning to salt-water fishing 16 years ago.

Three good reasons told me the Rotorua to Ohope cycle ‘fun ride’ (November 14) would be a painful experience. Reason

number one was the wind, a fresh southwesterly that meant the speed would range between fast and faster.A bunch of bare feet pound down the flattened grass and fly over the finish line. Whoooah - that was close! There’s plenty of puffing. But, being kids, these athletes are all fully recovered in around three seconds and raring to go again. Yeah! Now for the field event. It’s Whakatane Athletic & Harrier Club’s children’s athletics night at Rex Morpeth Park. The Tuesday night fixtures (held weekly from October to March) are a decades-old tradition and currently attract 150-200 children, aged from 2-12. It’s all about the children having fun and building skills for the future, enthuses Dave Rondon, one of the club’s long-time athletics organisers and now also a part-time Sport BOP CoachForce athletics co-ordinator.“Athletics is the basis for every sport. I can’t think of a sport where you don’t use the skills from

running, jumping and throwing,” he says.Activities kick off at 5.30pm. Guided by parents, the children move round in age groups, each doing a short sprint, then a field event such as a high jump or discus throw, and then another longer running race. Sometimes there’s a relay race to wrap things up, and it’s all over by 7pm.Children’s athletics has been run over the years by dedicated parents with expertise from Noel Jones. For three years, Noel’s daughter Bronwyn has been running the activities. “There are many others who help out (with) starting, measuring, writing, retrieving, time-keeping, lining kids up, organising and finally supporting and cheering on the kids as they try their best,” Dave says. Each year, children who want to are welcome to participate in the club’s athletics championship events in February and March, with plenty of certificates to be won. For those who want to travel further afield, there are also regular Ribbon Days around the Bay of Plenty (there’s one in Kawerau in December). Then there’s the North Island Colgate Games, next held in January 2011

in Hastings.“The Colgate Games is virtually the New Zealand national championships for kids.” Dave and Noel have coached children for years. Dave cites Tiian Brownless, Gregan Maui-Black, Lauren Henry, and Hope Middleton as up-and-coming fresh talent.Tiian is a sprinter. He has good natural speed. He’s really quick off the mark, and he’s determined. Gregan is another sprinter with great potential. He’s improving in his jumps and throws all the time. Lauren is the classic perfectionist in everything she does. You watch her technique and you notice the little things she does to help her perform in all her events. Hope is another who not only enjoys athletics but tries anything and gives it her best shot.”“There are plenty of kids who show the same attributes,” he adds.At present, Whakatane and Kawerau are the only places in the Eastern Bay with regular children’s athletics - but that’s something Dave is keen to change.“Whakatane Athletic & Harrier Club has recently

gained kick-start funding from Sport Bay of Plenty to run athletics programmes in outlying areas,” he says. “Volunteers from the club will go out and run 90-minute sessions over a period of six weeks.”“Opotiki and Edgecumbe are looking to start children’s athletics. Hopefully it might get going again in Te Teko - they used to have a really strong athletics following there.”Since taking up the Sport BOP role in August, Dave has also been visiting primary schools between Tauranga, Rotorua and Opotiki, helping to coach teachers in run, jump and throw programmes. With a lot of travel, and a lot of goals, is he enjoying his new role? “Heck yeah,” he exclaims. “I’ve been doing this stuff for years, for free. Athletics offers variety, with sprints, throws, jumps and middle-distance events. Along the way it’s really rewarding to see kids develop not only physically but mentally and socially as well.”Children’s athletics are on Tuesdays from 5.30pm, with adults’ nights on Wednesdays from 5.45pm. For more information contact Dave Rondon on 027 221 5377 or [email protected]

Eastern Bay of Plenty children’s athletics is experiencing a second wind. Jim Robinson attends one of the weekly nights.

January gardeningOrnamentalsProlong flowering in ornamental beds by regular dead heading. Tidy and thin any ornamental trees.

Shrubs and trees planted last season will need special attention over the next couple of months if there are long spells between rains. Hand- watering on summer evenings can be relaxing, and allows completion of the garden.

Stake dahlias when plants reach maturity. Apply liquid manure to promote flowering. Container grown plants can dry out rapidly at this time of the year, add rain crystals mixed with water and scratched in to help with moisture retention over the hot summer months. Water plants regularly and thoroughly so they don’t die. Some annuals can be sown directly into the garden this month. Try larkspur and nemesias. Calandulas and pansies will be okay too.

EdiblesCitrus trees that dry out are likely to drop their fruit prematurely. Mulching around the trees helps conserve moisture. Summer herbs will be in full swing. Harvesting some now will ensure you can build up dried supplies before the plants start to go to seed.

Keep feeding and removing side shoots from tomatoes and cucumbers. Green leafy vegetables can continue to be planted, provided they are watered well. Sow seeds now for veges if you wish. We have a fabulous range of vege plants available, along with a great range of herbs and plenty of fruit and citrus trees.

They are good to plant as long as you water well and add rain crystals. Call and see us. Place your orders for next season also if there was something you missed out on this year.

Catering a specialty!

We still have a good range of trees available. You can plant any time as long as you prepa re your soil and water well. Once they are dead no amount of water will revive your tree. Some garden centres have been known to replace them but buyer beware.

We have a good grade of clivias in store that are fabulous for shaded areas.

January is the time of the year where gardening is too hot, so try and do most in the evening when you are watering, you could take your glass with you and a chair and become part of the garden for a few hours, just think how relaxing that will be.

We hope you have all had a great Christmas and New Year and are looking forward to the rest of summer. Hi to the campers and holiday makers and we hope to see you at the cafe for a delicious ice cream or thick shake.

next flush. They have been particularly beautiful this year, and our limited stock is looking fabulous and a credit to our staff. Water them well for a few days before you go away and hopefully they will survive, or get the neighbour to give them a sprinkle every other day. If they are suffering from black spot, remove those offending leaves and burn them, and spray with a solution of 50 percent skim milk and 50 percent water. Don’t forget to put in your orders if you require something special for next season.

With the warm weather come aphids. Control by squashing or spraying with substances such as pyrethrum.

Remove caterpillars by hand or spray with organic or non-organic insecticides. We have a good range of Wally’s products, which are organic and work really well.

With the summer here in force you may want to try some of Wendyl’s range of homemade products.

Cleaning your fridgeTake a cup of baking soda and spread liberally around inside the fridge. Dampen with a wet cloth and wipe out the fridge. The baking soda cleans and deodorises, so smells disappear as well. Wipe down with vanilla essence for a lovely fragrance and put a bowl of baking soda in the back of the fridge to keep it smelling fresh. If you have a fridge with a chrome finish, wipe the outside with baby oil to make it shine.

Insect repellents

Outdoor fly spray

This tea is an excellent repellent for flies

and can actually be used on your skin. It’s

great for outdoor use, but be warned, it

won’t kill the flies. It’ll just make them go

away for a while, so frequent application is

recommended.

8ml citronella

1 tbsp methylated spirits

2 tsp dishwashing detergent

2 tbsp white vinegar

150ml strong tea

Mix together and add water to make one

litre. Pour into a spray bottle and set it on a

reasonable concentrated spray.

Bay Property

A late spring surge in the residential property market has lifted the number of sales to more than 5000 and

the national median price up to $360,000, according to figures released on December 14 by the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ).

“The indication of a lot more listings noted at the beginning of November have led to a late flush of spring activity,” says REINZ spokesman Bryan Thomson.

“With pent-up levels of people now in the market who need to buy or sell homes, we can expect the increased activity to continue throughout the summer.”

Total dwelling sales rose to 5138 in November from below 5,000 for the previous five months. The national median price rose from $350,000

in October to $360,000 in December, an increase on the November 2009 median price of $355,000. This nearly equals the record national median price of $360,500 in March 2010.

The national median number of days to sell has dropped to 40, from 41 in October and 43 in August and September last year.

“With sellers coming to terms with current market prices and buyers reassured about the long-term stability of interest rates, confirmed last week by the Reserve Bank, we can look forward to more positive levels of real estate market activity than we have seen over the past six or eight months,” Bryan says.

Nationally the total value of residential sales, including sections, increased from $1.67 billion in October to $2.26 billion in November.

Late spring activity lifts residential sales

Ohope Beach Realty owner /manager Liz WilliamsThere have been plenty of keen property inquiries and more listings from Whakatane to Opotiki and all points in between, Liz Williams says. Recent sales of a Waiotahi Beach Coastal Estate beach front property and a prestigious Ohope Beach Resort apartment point to a noticeably stronger demand for coastal lifestyle.

Harcourts principal/manager Linda Sowerby Steady sales in Ohope and a lift in Whakatane meant November finished strongly compared to the same month last year, Linda says. “Edgecumbe seemed to have come into its own, with a number of strong inquiries resulting in successful sales.“Buying property in this smaller town is a good option for folk who are finding difficulty with some of the banks’ lending criteria.”

Century 21 owner/manager Janette WallbuttonJanette noticed stronger buyer inquiry for both residential and rural property in early December. Viewings are good and Edgecumbe properties are definitely in demand. Kawerau agents Dianne and Juliana report that more listings are coming in and contracts are coming together.

McKechnie Quirke and LewisMarianne Wilson, associate partner at Whakatane law firm McKechnie Quirke & Lewis, has been involved with all aspects of property conveyance work and says November was a particularly active month - an improvement on the preceding two. With interest rates holding steady at a reasonable rate, there is every reason to believe for a positive real estate market into the New Year. Commercial property sales and lease agreements have also been slow during the latter part of 2010 but, with careful and astute investigation prior to purchase, investors can still achieve excellent returns from the commercial sector. Farmers and horticulturists were chirpy at Christmas following a much-needed rain. This, coupled with a promising payout for dairy farmers, has been a much-appreciated end to the old year and an optimistic hope for 2011.

January also sees many visitors to our

brings lazy summer days where a Julians Berry ice cream goes

down real well. You choose the berry avour and whether you

would like ice cream or frozen yoghurt then watch us blend the

two together and present it on a regular or waffle cone for you

to enjoy. We know these Julians berry ice creams are good as we

sold 50,000 last summer. People just love them. If you haven't

had one you really need to get one today.

JanuaryJanuary is also time for Sweet corn. We pick ours fresh every day

and some say we have the best sweet corn they have ever

tasted. This is because it is grown in the sunniest place in New

Zealand and it is so fresh you are eating it on the same day it

was picked. I love my corn boiled in the pot for a few minutes

then heaps of butter and salt. It is so lling it can be lunch or

dinner all by itself.
