2008 AAAS Annual Meeting14–18 February 2008 • Hynes Convention Center, Boston
Get Involved in a Global ConversationCome to one of the most cross-disciplinary conferences in the world. Engage in powerful
networking opportunities while gaining new insights. Hear and discuss the latest advances
in scientific research and technology.
Network. Connect. Learn.
Sessions emphasize the power of science, technology, and engi-
neering as well as education to assist less-developed segments
of the world society, to improve partnerships among already-
developed countries, and to spur knowledge-driven transforma-
tions across a host of fields.
Each year at the AAAS Annual Meeting, professionals from
across disciplines and around the world gather to discuss new
research, emerging trends, and exciting new possibilities.
It’s the place to be from 14–18 February for scientists and
engineers with a passion for their work or a desire to meet the
world’s foremost experts.

LIFE SCIENCE TECHNOLOGIESAAAS/Science Business Office Feature
Debubbler SeriesThe Systec Debubbler Series for low-pressure diagnostic andlife science instruments improves on passive bubble-trap tech-nology with active bubble removal and transfer-line degassing.Three configurations—active debubbler, degasser/debubbler,or transfer-line degasser—offer the choice of removing bubbleswith or without also removing dissolved system gases. Highly ef-ficient online active debubbling helps equipment manufacturersimprove dispensing precision, reduce sample loss and reagentusage, and improve analytical accuracy in high throughput ap-plications. The new series features an innovative semipermeabledegassing membrane to remove gases from dispensed liquids.
Gel Documentation SystemThe next generation DigiGenius budget gel documentation systemfeatures a high-resolution, computer-controlled camera, allowingmolecular biologists to easily view images in real time on any com-puter. The 10-megapixel camera can separate even the closest bandimages. The camera can be linked via an interface to a computer inorder to automate the camera’s setup and images can be capturedon either a flash card or computer. Users can choose to add compat-ible components to the basic system such as an ultraviolet transil-luminator or white or blue conversion screens. It comes with a safetyhood upgradeable to a full minidarkroom.Syngene

Sulfur-Compound MeasurementA sensitive new analytical system enables routine measurementof thiols, thioesters, disulfides, and other sulfur-containing com-pounds. Sulfur-containing compounds are critical to a variety ofbiologically and clinically important processes, from oxidative me-tabolism, to cardiovascular and neurodegenerative-disease mecha-nisms, to signal transduction, butmeasuring themhas been difficult. The new system incorporates a specially developed electrochemicalcell with a unique boron-doped diamond (BDD) working electrodecoupled with the Coulochem III ECD system. The electrode providesexcellent sensitivity and durability, while eliminating the problemsof fouling, high background, and mobile phase oxidation associatedwith earlier electrochemical detection (ECD) systems.ESA Analytical

LiteraturePrecision Optical Filters for FluorescenceMicroscopy is a new catalogthat includes 15 new high-performance sets for fluorescent proteinsand 10 new sets for fluorescence resonance energy transfer. Thesenew products complement an extensive selection of dye-specific fil-ter sets for all single-label and multilabel microscopy applications, including quantum dots, multiplex fluorescence in situ hybridization, ratio imaging, confocal, and multiphoton. Other resources include afluorophore reference table, light source and detector spectral data,an explanation of filter nomenclature, guidelines for choosing the op-timal filter sets, and a list of components organized by wavelength.Omega Optical

Distillation SystemThe Lab-Crest Midi-Dist Distillation System saves space and timein laboratory testing and analysis requiring distillation. Designedto allow replacement of costly macro distillation techniques, thesecompact units allow multiple samples to be prepared for analysisquickly and easily. The heater, holder, manifolds, tubing, couplings, and controls are integrated and designed to simplify setup and use.It is comprised of 10 complete borosilicate glass units and a 10-position aluminum heat block and apparatus holder, coated withTeflon for corrosion resistance. Glassware, heater, water, and vacuummanifolds, controls, and connections are integrated into a singlecompact system. The system can handle up to 10 50-ml liquid orsludge samples.Andrews Glass Co.

Multiparameter SystemVersion 2.0 of the LiQC multiparameter system is for simultaneousdetermination of density, refractive index, pH/conductivity, and color. The instrument combines single measurements into one automatedprocess. A sample vial is filled, placed on an automatic sample chang-er, and assigned a barcode label. The LiQC automatically completesevery subsequent step: choosing the appropriate method, pumpingthe sample into the various flow-through cells, and performing allmeasurements. The instrument evaluates results statistically, com-pares them to specifications, and transfers them to laboratory infor-mation systems. The LiQC thoroughly cleans and dries the measuringcells before moving on to the next sample.Mettler Toledo
