Nursing 100-01
Introduction
Modern day nursing has evolved into a profession that was once made up of
prostitutes, to one that is highly idolized and appreciated by society today. Sister
Callista Roy created a theory in which she introduced the Roy Adaptation model,
which lists and describes the importance of helping patients cope with change. This
theory outlines one aspect of nursing that positively reflects the ideals and morals of
the profession.
History of Nursing
Prior to the 1800’s, the profession of nursing was strictly based on religion
and spiritual beings. Successful nurses were considered to be witches and their
methods were deemed magical (Cherry & Jacob, 2011, pp.23).
The first official hospital in Colonial America was established in Pennsylvania
after orders from Benjamin Franklin. The establishment of hospitals ignited change
in the nursing field in that nurses were no longer primarily in-home health care
providers (Cherry & Jacob, 2011, pp.7).
Following World War I, advancements in nursing practices attributed to the
disappearance of previously deadly epidemics. Further legislation was also passed
through Congress to protect and increase the well being of women and children.
Following World War II, many women returned home to traditional roles and this
influx caused a major shortage of nurses. An attempt to fix this problem was the
implementation of the Nurse Training Act of 1943, which was designated to increase
hospital funding, in efforts to increase incentives for nurses to return to work and to
encourage young people to adopt the profession (Cherry & Jacob, 2011, pp.13). This
shortage of qualified nurses helped contribute to the newly adopted image of a
heroic and appreciated nurse. Efforts to promote and protect this positive image of
nursing, such as the ANA, have been around ever since (Cherry & Jacob, 2011).
Nursing Theorist
Sister Callista Roy came up with the organized model known as the Roy
Adaptation Model. Her theory focuses on the core idea of adaptation (Badr, 2014).
When a patient faces change in their health or environment, the theory emphasizes
that it is the duty of the nurse to assist individuals in coping with such disturbances.
The nurse is expected to introduce techniques and adaptive instruments as
necessary, in order to provide for the most successful healing atmosphere (Cherry &
Jacob, 2011, pp.84).
Her theory also supports the idea that nursing is both the science of
mastering acquired knowledge and understanding the art of applying such
information in the practical setting. Nursing intervention should help guide a
patient through any changes in regards to their health or environment (Senesac,
2013).
Connection of Theory to Philosophy
Roy said that adaptation involves “manipulating the stimuli that comes from
the environment so that they fall within the clients field of positive coping” (Badr,
2014, pp.2).
In the health care profession, there are cases in which nothing can be done
for the patient in terms of prolonging their life. I believe this is when the nurse’s
role in adaptation is the most crucial. I believe the single most thing that presents
the profession of nursing in such a positive light is the ability to provide for a shift in
patient care from increasing the duration of life to improving the quality of life,
whenever deemed necessary. This is something that primarily falls on the shoulder
of a nurse. This end-of-life care is the most intimate time for nursing-patient care
because often times the physician has the lesser role at this point.
Summary
Overall, the nursing process consists of six steps: assessing behavior,
evaluating stimuli, establishing a diagnosis, create goals, implement a nursing-
assisted patient intervention, and evaluate the goal’s achievement (Senesac, 2013).
These are the steps that are also taken to provide a path to guide a patient towards
adapting to any disruptions in their health. Helping a patient come to terms with
their diagnoses is a responsibility that should be held of very high importance to
nurses. Whether it is something as simple as a new medication, or as heavy as
coping with end-of-life, a nurse must be there to provide comfort and ease concerns
of the patient.

Longwood Relay For Life
I volunteered my time for 6 hours of the event with the goal of
raising money for cancer research for the American Cancer
Society. I was a participant for the Delta Zeta Sorority team and
together we were able to make an over a four thousand dollar
donation towards the cause. We alternated walking laps around
the track and selling cake-pops to put towards the money we
raised. This was the second year in a row that I was a participant
in the event. There were several quest speakers that spoke on
behalf of either personal or professional experiences that tie them
to the cancer research fundraising cause.
Farmville VNA Chapter Meeting
I attended the chapter meeting on February 22, 2016 at 5pm that
was lead by Claudia Meinhard. The meeting lasted an hour and
for the duration of the chapter the members were introduced to
several recent research projects that have been conducted at
Centra Southside Community Hospital by the nursing faculty. Of
these research projects I was enlightened about current findings
related to post-operative pain in pediatric tonsillectomy patients,
blood culture contamination, and laboring using the use of peanut
balls.
Personal Growth and Goals
Over the past year I have been employed during the several academic intersessions with Northern Virginia Maxillofacial and Implant Surgery. While I was able to discover and confirm my passion for the healthcare field and for the individual patients I provided care for, I was also confirmed that I had not yet discovered the field of nursing that I would like to further explore. With this being said, my goal for the future is to continue to put forth the utmost effort in my studies while also exploring other routes of nursing.
At the company I was hired as a surgical technician. A typical day for me consisted of me being the third assistant in surgeries, sterilizing the instruments, and discharging the patients from the recovery room. The job was extremely fast pace and it was expected and necessary that my teammates and I contribute equally and work as a team at all times. I was able to observe the start of hundreds of oral surgeries: IV set up, IV insertion, IV medication administration, anesthesia administration, tooth extractions, tumor extractions, bone grafts, implant placements, and much more during my employment. I quickly learned the
instruments and uses of the equipment so that I was able to be the best contributor to the team that I possibly could be. I become equipped with the proper use of personal protective equipment and sterile techniques. I was able to work close by under the four experienced surgeons at the practice. I was able to record and collect vital signs from every patient that went through the recovery rooms when I was in charge of them. I gave the final post operation instructions to the patient and their accompanied member(s) and made sure all their questions were answered before sending them home.
The plethora of patient interaction that I benefitted from ensured me that I am studying the correct career for me. I enjoyed learning and growing as a future health care professional at the oral surgery practice. However, for the future I hope to find even more relevant experience to nursing. I have goals to also work at a practice where there at least are some nurses at the practice that I could interact with and observe in action. I think the opportunity that this job gave me was enormous and I have grown in many ways from my ability to fulfill the position. I am currently in search of an even better job opportunity related to nursing for this coming summer.

This article concerning peanut balls is relative to the labor and delivery field
of nursing. The article is proving that cesarean rates, which inevitably are
accompanied by an increased incidence in delivery complications, can be decreased
with the use of the peanut balls. These inflatable objects are used to open up the
birth canal and increase a woman in labor’s contractions. When researching, these
items seemed to be widely used in many locations throughout the U.S. and the
results are in favor of these peanut balls. The VNA chapter meeting also agreed with
this conclusion and their individual statistics were that the average labor time was
decreased by 90 minutes, there was a 50% decrease in the individual chance of
cesarean sections, the hospital incidences of cesarean section decreased from `16%
to 13% after the implementation, and there was a consequential 100 % patient
satisfaction with the contraptions and Centra Community Hospital.
