Editor:
I’m Dennis and as an agent for the Works I have been distributing the Longlevens local to your homes for nearly two years, so it is likely that you may have seen me on my rounds.
I am now looking to submit some interesting articles, which I hope, will complement our already popular magazine.
For future issues I will be looking for local topics, your opinions (good or bad!), stories & people of interest so any suggestions would be most welcomed - please email [email protected].
As a community magazine we are always trying to extend our links with local businesses and believe that our low budget advertising offers could be the answer to promoting a company’s business during the current “credit crunch” climate.

DAVE’S TOP TIPS
Hairline Cracks Around Coving
One thing that some people get problems with is the reappearing hairline cracks around coving joints and edges. Even after painting, these cracks reappear once the paint has dried out. The usual cause for this is the filler or caulk around the edges to draw the moisture too quickly from the paint causing it to split.
A quick tip to help get rid of these cracks is to give the affected areas a coat of oil based undercoat. Once dry this should help seal the cracks and prevent any further cracking. Allow for more drying time for the undercoat before applying your topcoat emulsion layer.
Regards
Dave Stevens.
If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you.

Each room takes the name of one of the founding owners – Joseph Sturge, James Shipton, John Biddle, William Partridge, and Samuel Herbert. Merchants’ Meeting Rooms are hosted by Adult Education in Gloucestershire in Llanthony Warehouse. Llanthony was the last warehouse to be built and was owned by Wait, James & Company who traded until the early 1920s. It is situated in the heart of the dockland development overlooking the Mariners’ Chapel, and close to the Gloucester Quays Designer Outlet shopping village. Previous customers have commented…
‘Wow… the room is amazing, so much cheaper than we have paid for hotels’ ‘Meeting in the docks is lovely, quite an inspirational setting’
Based on the 5th and 6
th floors of the Llantony Warehouse we are confident you’ll like the space as much
as we do and with all the city attractions and parking within a stone’s throw of the rooms your delegates will be happy too. Our prices start from £30 for a room for half day rising to £95 for our largest room for a whole day (can seat 26 boardroom style) Individual and block bookings are all welcome with catering options available through from tea/s and coffees to hot dinners. Dick Whittington Farm Park Spring is upon us and there is no better place to appreciate this than at the Dick Whittington Farm Park at Little London, Longhope, in west Gloucestershire. During the long cold wet Winter the animal Mums have been carrying their babies in readiness for the Spring-time arrivals at Easter. Lambing is now well underway at the Farm Park. With so many new mouths to feed the public are invited to assist with the bottle-feeding of the lambs which is great fun for the kids. Chicks and ducklings are hatching from the eggs. Baby wallabies (Joeys) are beginning to peer out of their Mother's pouch. The pygmy goat flock has been swelled by a number of newly-arrived kids (the four-legged sort) and even shoals of newborn carp have been spotted in the Carp Lake. Enjoy the blaze of colour along the daffodil walk Nature Trail. Peer into the Bluebell Wood to enjoy the colourful carpet of bluebells and see if you can spot any activity around the buzzard's nest. The Charolais cattle now have calves at foot and even the Shetland ponies are expecting their foals to pop out shortly. The massive indoor Play Barn is always very popular. Outside there is the mini-digger, water blaster, giant sandpit with wooden fort and the newly-extended pedal kart course to enjoy. Keep up to date by visiting the website www.dickwhittington.org. The Park is open every day from 1st March through until September. For further information telephone 01452 - 831000.

Olives - The New Community Shop At a time when everything in the economy seems to be all doom and gloom, how refreshing it is to see a new business venture opening in Longlevens. Olives, a local shop opened in early March and is providing the community with quality, locally sourced products from across Gloucestershire. The aim of the shop is to provide local residents with fresh fruit and food items whilst reverting to the more traditional over the counter service and offering a focal point where people can meet and chat. The owners Dave Reid and Emma Tandy are a vibrant and enthusiastic young couple that are keen to establish their business in Longlevens. It has only taken them about six months to take Dave’s idea from conception to reality. Dave’s past experience in the food retail industry with Sainsbury’s and the Co-op have given him a sound working knowledge and experience of the Food Chain Market. Already Dave and Emma are considering the introduction of tables and chairs for the interior and exterior of the shop where people could chat over a cup of coffee or tea! This would certainly enhance their vision, in seeing the premises as a Community shop & meeting place.
Dave and Emma in Olives
The shop itself is both light and airy and conveys a clean and healthy environment. Some examples of locally sourced products include: Fruit and Vegetables from John Walker at Bamfurlong, Bread from the St George Bakery in Corse, Honey from Maisemore and a varied assortment of fruit juices from Ledbury and Newent. The Ethical Edition Company in Innesworth prepares the finest imported coffee from Brazil, whilst a variety of teas complete this review with the increasingly popular Tea Pigs range of teas available in several flavours. Sandwiches and hot drinks are currently available as a take away service with a 10% Discount available at Lunchtime for members of the Police, Fire or Ambulance services. Let’s take this opportunity to wish both Dave and Emma every success with their venture and help them to establish Olives as indeed a focal point for our local Community.

Community Policing Update: Safety and Security In line with many public services the Police Force in Gloucestershire is undergoing some major changes. However, from a Community policing perspective, you will be glad to hear that Charlotte Simmons and Matt Adinall, our local Police Community Support Officers will continue their roles in the Longlevens and Elmbridge areas. Additionally they will have support of a new Community Beat Officer, PC Sue Gallop. PCSO Charlotte Simmons PCSO Matt Adinall We are all aware of the spate of burglaries in the Longlevens area, most of which take place in the early evening, we are therefore reminded to remain vigilant at all times and report anything or anyone acting suspiciously. Another incident of concern was the attack on an elderly resident from Little Walk when he was followed home and robbed by an unknown thug, although this is a rare occurrence it again highlighted the need for personal awareness and safety. Following the incident Charlotte and Councillor Kathy Williams toured the community reassuring people of the support services that are always available to us. Safety and Security of our premises is essential if we are to prevent any recurrences. Therefore, if you are uncertain or need advice, do not hesitate to contact either Charlotte or Matt who will conduct a Safety/Security survey for you free of charge. Charlotte also reminds us that on the last Saturday morning of every month in Longlevens Library there is a surgery with a local councillor, which both PCSO’s regularly attend and are available at the Police Information Point in the library to resolve your queries or offer advice on Security and Safety within our Community. Finally, as a Community lets be vigilant, safe and secure in helping to prevent unwanted, petty crime in Longlevens. The Local Contact Number is: 0845 090 1234
