What is Dual Credit?
Dual Credit is part of Lone Star College System’s Exceptional Admissions program, usually designed for high school students who demonstrate college readiness.
The Dual Credit program allows students to earn high school credit and college credit at the same time
Benefits
Earn college credit and shorten time needed to obtain a college degree
Lower the cost of college Gain college experience while still in a high school
supportive environment Apply dual credit courses as advanced measures to a
distinguished graduation plan Enhance high school GPA; Some dual credit courses are
weighted higher Many of the classes are fully transferrable to public
colleges or universities in Texas
Grades in dual credit and College Credit only classes become a permanent part of your college record.
Students who receive a D or F in a dual credit course are not permitted to continue in the dual credit program.

AP or Dual Credit
• AP classes are 6.0 GPA fall and 6.0 GPA spring• All dual credit on TWHS campus are 6.0 credit per college course
(one fall/one spring). College Algebra is Honors in the fall (5.0) and dual credit in the spring (6.0)
• DC is recognized in Texas Public Universities and in many private and out of state schools
• AP is nationally recognized with AP style timed writings in all classes
• DC = earn college transcript as you go• AP= earn college credit based on AP exam score at end of year
How do we know which is better for us?• Everyone is different – look for the right balance of classes • Research the colleges- look at transfer course equivalency to
determine credit
TWHS Dual Credit Process
1. TWHS website- Dual Credit Registration- Step 1- Apply– Students sign up for a Help Session on TWHS campus during
the school day– Must attend both Help Sessions- will receive a pass that morning
2. Receive a packet during the first Help Session with further instructions and how to qualify chart– The completed packet (2 blue forms and signature sheet) are
due at THE SECOND HELP SESSION (make sure all highlighted parts are filled out)
– Log into College Board or ACT account- print PDF with PSAT/SAT/ACT scores and attach to packet. First and last names and scores must be on the same page.
– Students who do not already qualify will sign up for TSI at second Help Session
Next Step3. Paperwork
– Once paperwork and scores are turned in, counselors complete the bottom portion of the two blue forms, adding the classes the student requested. Counselors will meet one on one starting next month.
– Lone Star registers the students into the classes.
4. Payment– Near the end of May, students and parents will receive an email from
TWHS stating the payment window is open with directions on how to pay for fall classes in the MyLoneStar portal. The deadline for payment is August 2, 2019.
– REMEMBER: DC College Algebra is a spring only college course and will NOT be included in fall Lone Star classes. This is not an error.
– There will be another payment deadline in December 2019 for spring Lone Star classes. An email will go out to parents and students when it is time to pay for spring semester. This will include DC College Algebra.
Teacher & Counselor Recommendations
Recommendations• Each teacher should have met with the students to give their
recommendations on level of core classes next year• Counselors are beginning to meet with the students individually
starting in February and will discuss
Things to Consider– My student qualifies for DC but is it the best idea? The grade will
follow them to college, an A or a B could be an advantage but a C could negatively affect college GPA
– My student qualifies and always does well, but they have 6 higher level classes and Band. Is it too much? Counselors state that each DC or AP course is at least 2-3 hours of work per class per night
Other DC Classes
DC US History Summer School– Located on CISD Summer School campus (TBA)– History 1301/1302- two 6.0 GPA credits– Summer before Junior year only– US History EOC December Junior year– Tell your counselor when you meet you’re interested. TWHS is
only given a certain number of seats, there will be a waitlist and a lottery in April to build the class. More info to come – all dates TBA (released around March/beginning April)
Other DC classes/electives– Not on TWHS campus– 4.0 GPA only– See counselor for more information
Please Remember
• All required paperwork and test scores are due before 3 PM on Friday, April 26, 2019. No paperwork or scores will be taken after this deadline and those students will NOT be placed in a DC class.
