May 24,1888 Rizal reached Queenstown Ireland

He got on board a ferry boat to Liverpool and a train for London

He lived in London from May 1888-March 1889

He choose it for 3 Reasons

1. To improve his knowledge on English.

2. To study Dr. Antonio De Morga's book success De Las Islas Filipinas which is found in the British Museum.

3. London was safe from the Spaniards.

He work in British Museum library, studied,copied, and published Morga's book

He stayed as a guest for Dr. Antonio Ma. Regidor.

By May he moved to a boarding house cause by the Beckett Family.

Bacause he was an excellent linguist, he bacame good friends with Dr. Reinhold ROST a Sanskit scholar. The Greatest scolar of the century. He even spent time with him.

Rost was impressed with his manners and called him " UNA PERLA HOMBRE" of Pearl of Man.

He left in London on March 19,1889

Paris, France ( March 1889)

Universal ExpositionToo many tourist in the city, he stayed

with Valentina Ventura. He transferred from different hotels and boarding houses.

Visited the home of Parlo de IqueraComposed the story of the " Monkey and

the Tortoise".He was facinated by the Universal

Exposition.

Specially the Eiffel Tower 9 (May 6,1889)He organized the

"KIDLAT CLUB" with Filipinos who wanted to join the expo.

He finalized his copy of Morga's Book without showed evidence that the Filipinos were already civilized before the Spaniards came.

He planned to establish a college in Hongkong with the help of Mr. Mariano Cunanan who promised to help him raised 40 Thousand Pesos. Unfortunately did not succed. But when he was exiled in Dapitan, he was able to established a boys school.

He wrote again another satire entitled "POR TELEPONO" as a reply to father Salvador font his slanderer.

January 28,1890 he left for Brussels,Belgium

Brussels, Belgium

Jose Albert accompanied him to Brussels. He also lived with Jose Alejandro. He left Paris because

-the expensive cost of living

-the gay social life hampered his literary works.

In Brussels, he made himself busy with sculpturing,shooting,going to gym,writing & reading , and writing articles for LA SOLARIDAD , examples are

A LA DEFENSA, LA VERDAD PARA TODOS, Vicente Barrantes Teatro Tagalo Una Profanacion, Crueldad, Ingratitudes. Etc.

-He was the first to advocate Filipinization of Orthography. He adopted filipinized tagalog in his translations of SCHILLER's WILHELM TELL, Andersen's Fairytales,even in NOLI ME TANGERE.

He wrote an article about the NEW ORTHOGRAPHY of the TAGALOG LANGUAGE in the newspaper.

He was criticized by his fellow Filipinos in MADRID for reminding them destroy the nation's reputation. He was even called POPE instead of PEPE.

This made Rizal feel the urge to go home for his people.But his friends,Blumentritt,Basa & ponce warned him of danger.He change his mind of going home because he heard from Paciano that they lost the Agrarian Case.Rizal planned to raise the case in Madrid.He plans to defend it in Spain.

Madrid, Spain

In justice for the family in Calamba. He arrived in Madrid on August 1890.But bad news piled as he arrived in the country.

1.Failure to get justice for the Famiy.Calamba was in chaos.Spanish Statesmen only contributed words of sympathy.&

2.The death of Jose Maria Panganiban-his propaganda comrade,in Barcelona due to illness on August 19, 1890.

3.Aborted duel with Antonio Luna & Wences Lao Retana.

4.Infidelity of Leonor Rivera,planning to get married to an Englishman.

5.Rizal & Del Pilar's rivalry & abdication of leadership in LA SOLIDARIDAD, leading to divisions of Filipino Community in Madrid.

He was deciding to settle either in the Philippines,HongKong or Japan because Europe seemed a banishment to him due to the conflict in La Solidaridad.

Biaritz,French Riviera

Rizal wanted to take a rest from the problems he was carrying.He stayed in Biarritz for a month.He finished EL Filibusterismo here.He ritered from the propaganda movement and he wanted to focus on publishing EL Fili and his medical profession.

GHENT,BELGIUMJune 21, 1891-He left brussels for Ghent.

He was financially hand up.He did not recieve for three months up to this date any pension from home.He was living in the most difficult situatio,renting a small room and eating the modest food in order to economize and able to publish the Fili.He had already pawned all his jewels.

OPTHALMIC SURGEON in HONGKONG(1891-92)

Rizal left Europe for HongKong where he lived from November 1891 to June 1892.

His reason for leaving Europe were:

Life was unbearable in Europe because of his political difference with M.H. Del Pilar and other Filipinos in Spain.

To be near his idolized Philippines and Family.

Rizal left for Ghent for Paris on October 3,1891.

He preceded by train to Marseillas and on October 18, he boarded the steamer Melbourne bound for HongKong.

There were 80 first class passengers, mostly Europeans,including 2 spaniards.

He befriended many missionaries and one of them is Fr.Fuchs, a Tyrolese,which he enjoyed playing chess with.He even wrote to Blumentritt saying:

"He is fine fellow , a Father Damaso without pride and malice.

Dr.Lorenzo P. Marques -a friend and admirer who helped him to build up a clientele.

He successfully operated in his mother's left eye so that she was able to read and write again.

January 3, 1892 - writing to Blumentritt, he said:

Here I practice as a doctor and I have.Here there are many sick of influenza because there there is an epidemic. Throgh the newspaper, I am informed that this sickness is also causing ravages in Europe. I hope you and your esteemed family will be spared in our house, my mother,my bother-in-law,and one of my sister are sick.Thank God,they are out of danger.

Rizal was given moral support and substantial and in his medical practice in Hongkong from some of his friends in Europe.

Mr.Bousted (the father of Nelly Bousted)-wrote to him on March 21,1892,praising him for his medical profession.

Dr. Ariston Bautista Lin- sent him a congratulatory letter and a book on Diagnostic Pathology by Dr.H Virchow and another medical book entitled Trait Diagnostique by Mcsnichock.

Don Antonio Vergel de Dios - offered him his services for the purchase of medical books and instruments which he might need in his profession.

Rizal possessed the qualities of a great ophthalmic surgeon.
