What are you doing on March 11th? Oh you're not sure? Well that means you've probably got no excuse to not join us at Birthdays. We'll be there celebrating a whole host of brilliant things; from the release of the new EP, by the extraordinarily talented Stay Bless, on our In Stereo Records imprint, to the fact this little magazine has just turned two years old, to our esteemed deputy editor's birthday. How could you miss out on all that fun? This month there's an incredible amount of fantastic albums coming out;
our dreamy (and ridiculously lovely) cover stars Purity Ring return with their sparkling yet hazy new record, the almost- suffocatingly beautiful new Sufjan Stevens record is here, and the super-fun, super-loud new Lightning Bolt is amazing.
You might even say there's a little bit of something for everyone. With any luckwe'll be outside, in the sun, enjoying every last note, but it's okay, there's plenty to suit the rain too.

RIDE
2012 Mercury Prize Nominees Django Django are back at Field Day this year. Their unforgettable performance in 2013 is one of my fondest Field Day memories andI can’t wait to have them on board again. Their brilliant new single First Light has got me really buzzing for the new album! The song is a real statement of intent on their return, great bass lines that then build up to those trademark harmonies that we’ve come to know and love Django Django for.
DJANGO DJANGOFIRST LIGHT
Ride are a band that I have loved for ages and I am so excited to have them at Field Day! To be able to bring such a seminal band back to a festival for the first time since Glastonbury ‘94 is the kind of thing you dream about, and something a lot of people have really been hoping for. Dreams Burn Down is a great track from Ride’s debut album Nowhere, that went on to influence so many. Also, it was the first track that I ever learned to play on the drums so many years ago - so it holds that memory for me too!

words by Tom Baker
Having worked with the brilliant Caribou since the very first edition of Field Day in 2007, I am very excited to welcome him back, this time as the well-deserved Saturday headliner. Dan Snaith released his sublime album Our Love last autumn, which saw him reach dizzying new heights. All I Ever Need, with its warm textures, is one of my favourite tracks on that album.
CARIBOU ALL I EVER NEED
I’m delighted to have the keyboardist and accordionist Hailu Mergia and his band with us. Tche Belew is a set of instrumental jazz and groove recordings from 1977, which was re-released by Awesome Tapes From Africa a few months ago. This is completely sublime music from one of the most seminal bands the funk-laced era of Ethiojazz and soul produced in post-revolution Ethiopia.

Erol Alkan’s Phantasy Sound label has a knack for picking up true talents and the acquisition of Ghost Culture is no different. Beginning as a bedroom project using one synthesiser, a sequencer and a couple of effects, his sound has grown into a huge meld of genres, with Pitchfork, Mixmag and Dummy Magazine all heaping praise on the bedroom auteur. Glacier is an almost epic track, that keeps building up sonically before dropping and then rebuilding. I love it… Addicted.

LISTEN TO: Dream Story
ONLINE: @Laura_Groves_

LIVE: St John on Bethnal Green, March 10th
If Laura Groves’ voice sounds familiar, that could be for one of a number of reasons. You may recognise it from her eponymous album as Blue Roses, which she recorded while still living in Yorkshire, and released through XL Recordings back in 2009. You could have heard it via Nautic, the DEEK Recordings collective she currently plays in alongside Nathan “Bullion” Jenkins and Young Turks’ Tic Zogson. You might even have been fortunate enough to catch her singing live, either at one of her own shows, or opening for Glass Animals, SOHN or Elbow. What’s certain is, if you have heard it, it’s remained with you. There’s an astonishing purity to Groves’ tones; an almost ethereal serenity that causes you to double-take. On her early work as Blue Roses, she cocooned her soft coos inside bucolic indie-folk. Now creating sumptuous-dream-pop under
her birth name, those warm vocals soar over pillowy synth textures, quietly propelled by supple grooves. What’s truly exciting about Groves is that you can hear her growing in confidence with each new release. Showcasing a melodic playfulness – characterised by complex arrangements and intricate vocal harmonies – last month’s Committed Language EP was even more sublime than 2013’s Thinking About Thinking. It’s been a joy to watch her songwriting evolve so far, and we’ll be continuing to follow her closely in the future, because hers is a talent, and a voice, to remember.

Swansea), a match where I learned what a Hotspur was (Shakespearean… very quaint) and where a fan literally offered me the very nice jacket off his back if I were to commit to being a Tottenham supporter for life (I declined, I needed time to think more thanI needed the, admittedly, very nice jacket). Remarkably, even more memorable than the football was later the same week getting lost and subsequently cornered by mounted police in a tremendously large crowd of people, gathered in an equally small space at the Notting Hill Carnival. Much like a public-facing ignorance of Pulp, blasting headlong into Notting Hill Carnival and completely losing your way is a mistake to never make in London.
In 2014 I made a record, and in 2015 I’m back for more cockney-rhyming slang, un-air conditioned hotels (and cars), pasties, Sunday roasts, football matches, gin-fuelled dancing, britpop history, cricket lessons (not like baseball), and most importantly to play some music, meet some people, and do it all again, smarter, harder and better.
The first time I came to London was January 2013, and we were playing The Lexington.I played the pre-show music too loud, the band missed our last cut-off, but the show was great, and the audience were delightful. However successful the night was though, what stayed with me most was the emotionally- charged dressing down I received for not knowing who Pulp were, a fact I mistakenly let loose at a post-show party downstairs (thank god Blur wasn't playing). Friends, that is a mistake to never make in London. We came again in April, and played twice. The first time at Wilton Music Hall, a concert significant for the amount of gin I drank after the show with Mayor Carcetti aka Petyr Baelish aka Littlefinger aka wonderfully kind actor Aidan Gillen. Later we played a memorable show at Queen Elizabeth Hall which, at that point, was the largest show we had ever played. We were reunited with my percussionist who had spent the previous week in the care of the NHS, a wonderful London story all its own that is not my privilege to tell. In August I came again, potentially overstaying my 2013 welcome, ostensibly to play Shepherds Bush, but I like to remember it for my first Premier League match (Spurs vs.

Known, loved, revered for cluster fuzz riffs and metal dirges, the band’s new album is a turnt for the books. A much crisper, cleaner articulated sound has come about from their submission to digital technology for the very first time. “Change is good," explains Chippendale who, despite being incredibly fond of
longtime collaborator Dave Auchenbach’s magical kit of recording equipment, felt that the band had exhausted their mad-fi methodologies: “It was almost like we’d travelled down the road and we’d come to the end of it, like what we could get out of that equipment. The old stuff was recorded to tape and the last couple of
It’s high time Rhode Islands’ sonic titans Lightning Bolt returned with their phenomenal cacophony of noise rock. It’s been too long since our stereos quivered, walls shook and neighbours complained. Sorry, neighbours. Fantasy Empire, their sixth album, is a razor sharp outing; clear, loud and proud. Six years has not mellowed the two piece. Drummer Brian Chippendale was as energized and enthused as ever when I caught up with him ahead of their new release...

records were recorded to weird archaic devices like DAT machines, just weird stuff that we probably shouldn’t have been using. So this time we went in to a studio and used the studio to our best advantage.”
Benefits of a studio might seem obvious but when it comes to this archivist of sound (Chippendale’s warehouse and studio space are something of a museum, with twenty years of equipment housed alongside recordings of live performances and rehearsals catalogued on cassette tapes) going digital seems somewhat out of character.
“There were drawbacks to the way we were doing things before. We weren’t getting any separation of our instruments, and you’d make a little mistake and we couldn’t really do an overdub because there was so much bleed-through. So instead of playing one song twenty times because one little snare hit was out of whack, let’s just go in to a studio and do separation and try something different.” His bass-wielding partner in crime Brian Gibson has embraced this new way of working and reaped the rewards. Digital Lightning Bolt is here to stay: “Yeah we’re into it,” Chippendale laughs. “Especially Gibson. He’s always wrestled with how he wants his bass to sound. He’s a very detail orientated person so he’s really getting in to that stuff. It’s given him a doorway in to the process where it used to be a little more opaque, so it’s been rejuvenating. We’re excited.”
You will still very much need those earplugs at their live shows, but expect to find the duo up on the stage these days. Their heyday of playing gigs on the floor, surrounded by a heaving, pulsing mass of bodies has passed. Why did the band start their famed guerilla tactics of playing anywhere but where was expected of them?
“The biggest intention was an immediacy thing. Like how can you make an impact on a viewer or a listener? We did the obvious thing. You don’t set up and wait
for the audience to come to you; you go across the room and set up where they are and you just play. It was just getting rid of that gap. In the early days there were so few people and then for a long time a very comfortable amount of people at the shows, so you could really get in there.” We could blame health and safety laws, an increase in the popularity of the band or just audience members being jerks for this change up to a higher ground, either way,it was time. Do they miss those days?
“Well it’s still something that we wrestle with, like how to proceed with a show. There’s something about playing on the floor when you’re playing a small place. It’s not necessarily an element of danger, it’s just like a real rush and it’s justso personal.”
I ask Chippendale if he can recall any particularly intense shows.
“Sure, there’s one that stands out.We played at the Knitting Factory in LA, ten years ago, and that show ended with all our drums gone except for a kick drum and a snare drum. There was a kid wrapped around the stand of the snare drum holding it and there was a bunch of kids piled over the bass drum. I’m usually out from the speakers a little way, but I’d been pushed back so that my back was schmooshed up against the speakers. In memory it was just a sea of writhing bodies. I was hitting the snare and I could just see the kids heads like they were just everywhere. And that one ended with Gibson playing bass, but somebody ripped out the cable going in to his bass and when they pulled that - all the wires from the inside came out with it.I feel like since we’ve switched it up and play on the stage there’s been a little less of the total destruction.” I suggest that destruction can’t go on forever. “It can, and it can’t” he laughs “I don’t know. It can go on for a long time.”
Fantasy Empire is released March 23rd via Thrill Jockey.

PURITYRING
WO R D S : R O B L E E D H A MP H OTO G R A P H Y: M I K E M AS SA R O
“In hindsight, it was like starting a new band.”
Megan James is reminiscing over Another Eternity. An album thatPurity Ring recorded together in the same room. Amazing, right?
For those of you not still reeling in shock, it’s time to getacquainted with the Canadian duo. Megan and her bandmate,
Corin Roddick, joined forces in 2010 while living 750 miles apart. They were a bedroom project that blew up via Tumblr, created a
whole record over email and now count Jon Hopkins andDanny Brown amongst their biggest fans.
None of this was supposed to happen.
LiS 23
“Even when we started Purity Ring we hardly knew each other,” explains Corin. The pair had played in the same band before, Gobble Gobble, but were more acquaintances than anything else. When it came to piecing together their debut album, Shrines, Corin provided the fizzing, hip-hop indebted electronica and Megan her esoteric coo. There was next-to-no collaboration between the two members with each of their parts being ring-fenced from the other’s interference.“If I knew I’d be building a career with Corin when we first met. I’d be like, ‘What the fuck?’” reflects James. “It would make zero sense.”And yet genre-hopping pop has brought the pair together. They now live down the street from each other in Los Angeles and have spent the past year learning how to function in unison. Although Purity Ring formed while living in Halifax and Montreal, both members grew up in Edmonton, Alberta - a mid-sized city with not much of an arts scene. It’s the kind of place where everyone in a band gravitates towards the same hubbub, and it was here that Megan and Corin returned to throughout last year when creating the bulk of their second LP. Instead of recording late at night while bathed in LCD screen light, the band went so far as to hire out a studio for themselves. Fear not, they haven’t completely changed.“There were piles of vintage gear and a giant mixing board that I’d just set my laptop on top of and we’d use one mic,” recalls Corin. In truth, Another Eternity doesn’t sound all that different from Shrines. The chopped vocals, cataclysmic synth lines and trigger finger percussion you’d associate with Purity Ring are all present and correct. What separates the two records is a sense of cohesion. You can hear it in the new single begin again,
where Megan’s esoteric lyrics are firmly handed centre stage amidst a thunderous swirl of bass and sampled piano. There’s no more fighting to be heard amidst the tumult, although this took took some time to perfect.
“There was a lot more communicating and that’s alwaysa process for everybody,”says Megan.
“Especially when it’s about something that you feel is yours. But we both know that Purity Ring wouldn’t exist without each other.”
When writing the album, Corin would mostly fly down from Montreal for a week to visit James at home in Edmonton. Neither of the pair wrote whole tracks for their sessions, instead they brought fragments that could be completed together. Their only real goal was to not make a Shrines II.
“Some songs started with lyrics or vocal melodies,” says Roddick. “Some songs started with a loop that I would have or a melody, and a lot of songs went through a transformation along the way.”
Album opener heartsigh is symbolic of this process. Written during Another Eternity’s very first sessions, its Carly Rae Jepsen-meets-Rustie convulsions only came together when the record was due to be submitted to 4AD - about twelve or so
LiS 25
months after work had started on the song. If you hadn’t guessed already, Roddick is a perfectionist.“We tried twenty different choruses,I changed the music around countless times and it only came together at the very last minute,” he says.As much as Purity Ring have changed, Megan’s lyrics remain an eternal fascination. Perennially uncluttered with their emphasis placed on lingering syllables, they flit unsettlingly between the earthly and metaphysical. “Watching me is like watching a fire take your eyes from you,” she sings on the slinking kiss
off repetition. As though true love and torture are one and the same thing.Megan would pluck her lyrics for Shrines from recent journal entries, lending them an air of confessional squalor. Body parts would collide and she’d unpick the wreckage. Since then the sometime designer, has grown in confidence and now publishes delectably twisted poetry to Purity Ring’s blog. “If I cut off thetips of my fingers / Maybe I’d see what ran through me,” she wrote in an entry last August. Press Megan on her often brutal outpourings and she’s hesitant to

elaborate. Even her bandmate Roddick is still in the dark as to what their songs actually mean. The two never talk about lyrics, only atmosphere.“Obviously you can tell that I struggle to be happy all the time, but that’s a part of my life that I appreciate,” explains Megan. While Purity Ring revel in chaos and misfortune, the duo themselves have never been closer. They’re audibly excited about Another Eternity, an album that’s seen their relationship evolve well beyond coexistence. Corin is particularly enamoured with the band’s step up from Shrines. Not least on the dizzying bodyache, a booming, theatrical track that nails the timbre Ungirthed was aiming for four years ago.“At the time I was happy with what I did,” he explains. “But when we wrote bodyache there was a big moment where I was like, ‘Oh wow. This is what I’ve been trying to do all along.’”That moment had been a long time coming for Purity Ring, but listen to their story and you feel it was inevitable from the moment they first met. Months before this Corin had been blown away by his future bandmate when he stumbled upon her playing piano at a local bar.“I was like, ‘Woah! Who’s that person with the amazing voice? What’s going on?’” he recalls. “At that moment I thought she was someone I’d like to work with 100 percent.”When they finally came face-to-face, Megan had exactly the same reaction.“My boyfriend was looking for a drummer for his band in Edmonton,” she remembers. “Corin tried out and I was like, ‘Woah! He’s 15 this is amazing.’ I thought he was this phenomenal drummer, like a prodigy.”How Purity Ring took so long to become friends is beyond us. Listen to Another Eternity and you’ll be left with one thought: better late than never.

I remember him emerging out of the darkness, adorned in giant swan wings. I recall a rare and immediate sting in my eyes at the overwhelming beauty of the moment. I remember everyone dancing to Chicago. I remember it all; the greatest show I ever saw. So I went back. Back to Chicago via Illinois, off to Michigan, through the Age Of Adz and ending up with Seven Swans; the greatest trip I ever took. If you’re like I was; aware you should love Sufjan, but just having never learnt why, then this breathtaking record might just be the one to capture your heart, forever.Carrie & Lowell is gloriously short on the ornate; free from any unnecessary embellishment, he makes every moment matter, and it just makes the searing honesty burn harder. It’s just you and Sufjan - the most tender heart-to-heart - as he meditates on life and death, and all the mess, love, hope and despair in the midst of those unshiftable bookends. Don’t come looking for answers though; this is mostly questions, wonderment and beseeching bafflement. Sufjan doesn’t know what to do with life, but he will tell you to make the most of it. “We’re all gonna die” he repeats over and over in Fourth Of July and like that other great live-for-every-moment song, Do You Realize?, he implores “Make the most of your life, while it is rife, While it is light.” It’s a record to tread carefully with though, because if life’s hitting you hard right now, the fragility here could feel like a sledgehammer to the soul. But there’s comfort too; comfort in Sufjan’s puzzled disquiet, in his admission of faults “I am a man with a heart that offends, with its lonely and greedy demands.” There’s comfort in this tranquil environment he’s created; it feels like reading in a library, like you’re in exactly the right place to ponder life’s great imponderables. This album could scarcely be more affecting, sadder, or more uplifting, and if what you look for in music is the combination of the deeply personal, and the utterly universal, if you look for a place to fit in, then you’ll not find many more rewarding records than Carrie & Lowell. Just stunning. Dave Rowlinson

Brushing off those winter cobwebs and watching bulbs bloom into flowers again, is what listening to The Staves’ new album, If I Was, feels like. Following up from their debut, Dead & Born & Grown, the British folk-rock trio of sisters’ latest record witnesses both an injection of muscle and much-heightened
ambition compared to its forerunner. Blood I Bled exposes sublimely harmonised lyrical power, whilst wistful dives of tumbling guitar link together with orchestral violin to create a truly mesmerising opening track. Let Me Down highlights a softened exquisiteness, before leading into Black & White; a revved-up version of the rest of the album thatsees the girls plug in their electric guitars for upbeat detonation. Sometimes, just sometimes, things fall together so faultlessly that you wouldn’t want to change a thing and, for The Staves, the triumphant If I Was fits that standpoint perfectly. Amy Gravelle
Shit & Shine have had a billion albums and a zillion members in the decade they’ve spent knocking rock and roll off its course, saving it from a dull abyss of melody, lyrics and structure. I’ve found keeping up with them near impossible. But if, like me, you’d enjoyed giving them a few
glimpses at festivals but were baffled as to where to start on record, let’s get this in writing for you, in big letters: THIS IS THE ONE. 54 Synth-Brass, 38 Metal Guitar, 65 Cathedral is a drone-dance album. It’s a krautrock disco party, or Sunn O)))’s Fabric Live compilation. Is it the best thing they’ve ever done? For all I know, yes. Is it the best thing I’ve heard in ages? Certainly. Thomas Hannan
For all their pilfering of global pop, The Go! Team’s sensory onslaught often evokes a trip down their hometown landmark, Brighton Pier. The clattering breaks, tweeter-tearing guitar, contorted samples and brassy J-popisms summon the clamorous soundclash of the arcades, the butterfly-bellied thrills of the
fairground, the queasy sugar-rush of cheap treats. Happily, on The Scene Between, Team captain Ian Parton’s gift for impactful vocal hooks (sung here by assorted female leads) and euphoric melodic swells is to the fore, binding the bedlam with moments of clarity – the fluorescent glam of Blowtorch; Waking The Jetstream’s gorgeous shimmy; the Fuzzy-Felt Family Stone of Her Last Wave – that are as exhilarating as a glimpse of that blue ocean, as revitalising as a lungful of sea breeze. The tendency to mention Tobias Jesso Jr’s personal misfortunes when assessing his music often obstructs the fact that it’s
extremely derivative. Fortunately for Jesso, his deftness as a songwriter clears this critical hurdle by a country mile. Debut album Goon explores his monomania for human love via the McCartney-esque and the lovelorn balladeers of piano pop past. Danielle Haim sits behind the kit for the heart-stoppingly beautiful Without You. In lesser hands a sentiment like “I just don’t know who I would be without you” would be hackneyed, but Jesso sings with simple unmistakeable sincerity. If heartache can erect summits as towering as Just A Dream and How Could You Babe then Jesso has clearly glimpsed into the abyss. Tim Hakki
I’m From Barcelona are not only Swedish rather than Spanish, but also push the boundaries of what you might ordinarily
consider a band to look like. The number of members varies between 16 and 28, and the repertoire of instruments includes saxophones, flutes, clarinets, trumpets, kazoos banjos, accordions, keyboards, guitars and drums – a combination that results in a vibrant and vivacious explosion of pop songs and dancing synth beats. The band were founded by Emanuel Lundgren a decade ago as a fun side project, but this new album is a testament to living in the moment, packed full of instant thrills and shimmering melodies, and sounding not unlike sunlight dappling through trees in a flood of summer optimism, and the sugary sweet joy of dancing until dawn.Francesca Baker
Fans of ramshackle Boston rockers Pile love them enough to cough up $17,613 for their new van. Judging by the strength of their fifth album the lads are quickly repaying their debt. Their no-frills dynamic is distilled and well captured in these ten tunes, displaying a profound new
maturity. From the frustrated fury of The World Is Your Motel to the rather un-Compton solo acoustic dirge, Fuck the Police, it’s clear that, loud or quiet, pissed or pissed off, the band’s relentless and dissonant musical explorations are bearing fruit. It’s a deceptive, varied and clever listen, with the jaw-dropping Touched by Comfort providing the best two-and-a-half minutes of heart-tugging and foot-tapping music in a very long time. The clowns are dead. Let the party begin. Geoff Cowart

"I don't know where to begin". Quite an opening line from the relentlessly eloquent Ben Gibbard. But this eighth studio album from the Washington indie stalwarts is understandably something of a new venture, as the first since last year’s departure of Chris Walla. But Kintsugi - the Japanese art of fixing pottery but purposefully highlighting its cracks as part of the item’s history - doesn’t feel like a debilitated Death
Cab; in fact, at first it sounds like a pretty happy one. Seemingly gone are the days of Gibbard’s emo escapades into hospital wings and untenable long distance relationships; Good Help (Is So Hard To Find) is a treat of hooky riffs, hi-hat heavy beats and catchy melodies; The Ghosts Of Beverly Drive stands-out with a classically satisfying Death Cab chorus, while Ingenue grows beautifully. However, for those - this fan included - looking for some Transatlanticism-esque melancholy, never fear. You’ve Haunted Me All My Life does exactly what it says on the tin: “You are the mistress I can’t make a wife” Gibbard rhymes above careful layers of gorgeous guitar lines. It’s followed-up by the album's ballad Hold No Guns, an entirely acoustic, romantic outing. There’s something almost Coldplay-like about Everything’s A Ceiling and piano-based closer Binary Sea, and before you know it we’re listening to a Death Cab classic; an emotional roller coaster proudly bearing its cracks for all to see. George O’Brien
Though not strictly billed as a concept album, Julie Campbell’s second full-length release feels terrifically in sync with its title. As a lyrical device, “Hinterland” functions on a number of levels: as a literal representation of the derelict industrial landscapes on Manchester’s outskirts; as a metaphor for a sense of internal isolation; and as a figurative portrayal of the unknown domain after death. Campbell’s
vision is so vividly rendered that to listen is to step straight inside a stark world constructed from “units of corrugated iron” and underground bunkers, senselessly scattered with “red scrap” and populated by disembodied voices and ghosts. Fittingly, she navigates these ruined spaces as if in a fever-dream, her nervy vocals ricocheting off the walls, with specific phrases subject to frenzied repetition. As with 2010’s Nerve Up, Hinterland plunders the jittery energy and clean lines of post-punk, but this time Campbell’s arrangements are more intricately layered, and there’s wider variety in styles. With its stabbing bassline, programmed beats and scratchy, funk riff, Groove It Out lives up to its billing. The title track takes a similar tack, but adds a reedy violin loop and abstract guitar shapes. At the other end of the spectrum is the spellbinding sprawl of Flee!, which sets Campbell’s plaintive tones over atonal string drones and flickering feedback. Being laden with so many metallic textures and treated sounds, Hinterland sounds every bit the labour of love it reportedly was. Again, the fact you can feel the spectre of industry looming is entirely in keeping with the concept. Gemma Samways

It was 2012 when we last heard from Leeds quintet Vessels. A lot has changed in this time, and one truth will have to be accepted; it’s time to say goodbye to the guitars. Dilate is an electronic album first and foremost. The sound that Vessels experimented with on 2012 EP Elliptic has been extrapolated,
each track a swell of synthesised energy. The warmth of Vessels’ earlier guitar-heavy sound is gone, replaced by throbbing heartbeats and intricate keyboard weaving. Echo In is a hallucinogenic vision quest in the vein of mellowed-out Mogwai, while On Monos and Glass Lake occupy the bass-driven landscape of chillstep, avoiding distorted aggro in favour of smoothed out waves. A different vibe then. Still, Vessels remain as thoughtful and precise as ever, even with the riff decidedly dethroned. Grant Bailey
King Khan pitches up in psycheville with his freaky BBQ show in tow, gargling out grubby earworms and demonstrating his best Screaming Jay Hawkins impersonation with new album Bad News Boys. It’s a record of half-baked garage ditties, lo-fi instrumentation and dynamic yet spluttered vocals. In amongst
the saliva there are infectious doo-wop and barbershop influences, giving Khan the style of a toothless and bloodshot Frankie Valli. Alone Again and Kiss My Sister First are glorious but elsewhere the album sounds like a King Khan sideshow; a vehicle for ideas that would otherwise never see the light of day. The puerile D.F.O and, presumably ironically titled, Zen Machines are patience testing while Snackin’ After Midnight is just plain bonkers. With lyrics about diarrhoea, cannibalism and cradle snatching, you certainly wouldn’t want these guys anywhere near your children. Crunch, crunch. Henry Wilkinson
Ripe 4 Luv is the work of Fucked Up’s Ben Cook - putting to use his experience ghost-writing for Clarkson, Swift and more - and taking on the pop lark himself. It’s a record that wants to be a pure pop album on its own terms, but therein lies the problem, with tracks like Aquarian and Kelly I'm Not A Creep
falling flat, and getting lost in muddled choruses. The seven minutes of Wrong Crowd, however, address this uneasy balance; not a moment is wasted, not a note or spoken French section could be cut. Ripe 4 Luv is worth sticking with to hear the sound of someone experimenting and learning about the pop perfection of the three minute single (with the special exception of four extra minutes of speaking in French). For the third year running Bad Vibrations bring their fantastic run of Label Mates shows to the ever-wonderful stage of The Shacklewell Arms, in order to showcase a bunch of the best new music from the most exciting independent labels in the UK, and beyond. Bigger and better than ever this year, it sees a ten-day run of shows all being kicked-off with a Californian punk hit from the mighty Burger Records (will we be be getting a Burger Records T-shirt? That is definitely the plan) and continues on to see the likes of Fierce Panda, Odd Box, Trashmouth, Heavenly and Fortuna Pop! - we’re especially excited to see the legendary Comet Gain again - show their wares at the venue. This is just absolutely guaranteed to be the most fun.March 6-15th, The Shacklewell Arms,71 Shacklewell Lane, E8 2EB @BadVibesUK // @ShacklewellArms // badvibrations.co.uk/

Whether hunkering down in the upstairs snug, basking in the sun on the London-Fields- overlooking patio, or settling down in front of the football, Pub On The Park has long been a mainstay of London In Stereo life. So what better place to hold an ale festival? Three days enjoying some early Spring sunshine (probably), and savouring beers from some of our favourites like5 Points and Redemption - plus a whole host of others - sounds pretty idyllic.Obviously there’s a bbq, because you should never have an ale festival without a bbq. Even more exciting, there’s a homebrew competition; so it’s time to bring out that Homerton Hammer, or whatever you’ve got fermenting indoors, and prove your worth - you have until March 15th to enter. It’s free to get into the festival, so, see you there.March 20th-22nd // Pub On The Park, E8 3PE@pubonthepark // pubonthepark.com/

Bloc Weekend returns to it’s original home of Butlins, Minehead this year, after a somewhat abortive attempt at bringing the weekender to London a couple of years ago. We’re thrilled to see one of the best electronic music festivals around back to life and with a stellar line-up. Headlined by Jon Hopkins, the acts range from the accessible to the abrasive, from returning veterans to rising stars, it’s a genre spanning treat. There’s still some chalets left, so gather your most fun friends and head to Minehead for an adventure you won’t forget.March 13th-15th // Butlins, Minehead@BLOCWKND // Blocweekend.com

The Prince Charles is one of London’s very finest cinemas, and always has a vivid array of imaginative scheduling, but not much would capture our imagination more than this; the Pixar pyjama party. Yep; Ratatouille, Brave, Toy Story, Monsters Inc, The Incredibles and Up combine to create a fourteen hour movie marathon guaranteed to run the full gamut of emotions. Oh god, Buzz has realised he can’t fly. Oh god, is Sulley ever going to see Boo again? Oh god, just all of those incredible first ten minutes of Up. Of course there will be plenty of laughs, too, and plenty of coffee.March 28th // Prince Charles Cinema, WC2H 7BY @ThePCCLondon // princecharlescinema.com/

Why do you live in London?Well, I cheated on London for a while and lived in New York as I’m half American but I missed home too much. I choose to live in London as, even if I stay in, (which some say I do too much) I know that at any time of the day I could go out and find something to do - the endless possibilities of London continue to inspire me.
Favourite gig venue?Unfortunately many of my favourite venues (or just most central London venues) have closed their doors over the last few years. I love the 100 Club in Soho. It has so much history both musically and personally - I played my first Stay Bless show, with Blood Orange, there.
Where do you like to drink?I don’t drink that much really but when I do get dragged out I like The Passage on Dalston Lane.
You’re in London, it’s sunny out, where do you go?I would say Hampstead Heath - tucked in the tall grass on one of the hills is pretty transcendental when it’ssunny, or Haggerston Park ifI’m feeling too lazy to walkfar/transcend.
Favourite outdoor space?Love it when they show a classic 80s film outdoors at Somerset House.
Does London ever influence the music you write?London influences pretty much all of my music. I’ve been living and writing here for ten years now, and most of my friends or relationships are in London. The pressures or the sometimes claustrophobic vibe of the city will push me into writing music as a form of escape. But I also get so much energy and motivation from London on a good day. Oftentimes London will seem like it’s trying to bury me, and other times it’s lifting me waaaay up.

Tonight sees a bunch of older songs (which have lost none of their vigour or lustre through ridiculous amount of headphoned listens) and a bunch of newer tracks; some crystalline, some kinda half-formed, some less than that, all of them thrilling. We see recurring characters (Jane reappears, dancing in the afterglow), we see Cleo and Harmony appear themselves, swapping driving seats on the freeway. They laugh at their mistakes, they seethe with disdain for anyone that’s ever screwed them over, they secure a place in the hearts, and - more importantly - minds, of everyone here. Dave Rowlinson
Girlpool have been in my life, what, six months? They already feel beyond vital. They already feel like the antidote to the gutless drudgery the BBC and Brits have noted down as this year’s sound. They already feel like the antithesis of everyone who’s ‘smashing’ this and ‘nailing’ that, without giving a second thought to what they’re saying. It feels like I've been waiting my whole life for them.

There’s no such divisiveness for the impeccably dressed Interpol, who take the stage as if in slow motion and launch straight into Say Hello To The Angels, swiftly followed by Anywhere and My Blue Supreme from last year’s El Pintor album.Sam Fogarino’s hypnotic kick drum and the repetitive hook of Lights are entrancing and as the track opens up the audience eruptinto a focused frenzy and sway to the extended outro. Couples all around the room are gazing into each others eyes as Paul Banks repeats ‘That’s why I hold you’. Touching, no?Each song is presented flawlessly; the bass is sounding deliciously dirty and buttery- smooth all at once and the double encore that follows Slow Hands, and ends gloriously with Untitled, is absolutely warranted. If anything, tonight’s show suggests that they’ve only just begun to peak and their best record may be yet to come. Either way it’s undeniable that when it comes to the stage, they truly are masters of their craft. Oli Knowles
As Health walk on I’m wondering whether they’ll tone down their set for this larger audience. It’s less than a second before I realise I was an idiot for even thinking it. Immediately we’re overwhelmed with a torrent of abrasive digital noise, mechanical blast beats and John Famiglietti’s glorious locks, before focusing into Crimewave and floor filler, Die Slow. They flick seamlessly between slick grooves and calculated bedlam - from melody heavy, Seven Wonders sampled, Goth Star, to the sonic tidal wave of We Are Water. New material bears more resemblance to the former and it goes down well, but it’s clearly not for everyone here. The band leaves the stage and some fool mutters, ‘thank fuck that’s over’. But, ya know, each to their own or whatever…

With increasing regularity, commentators are predicting the demise of the flagship of modern recorded music – the album. Except the album is not dead, and I for one continue to have a serious affinity with it. My relationship with the album began in a land before streaming, like many London In Stereo readers, in a choppy time for the music industry. It was busy failing to react to Napster and other illegal services. They had let the genie out of the bottle, and it was never going to go back in.It was 2000 and embarrassingly, my first foray into this brave new Napster world involved downloading a single track, The Bad Touch by the Bloodhound Gang, onto my Dad’s work laptop (sorry Dad). It became my window into discovering new music and breaking the shackles of mainstream radio by opening my eyes to so many new and exciting niches.See, back then, the internet was SO bad that the idea of downloading an entire album required incredible commitment, knowing that it would take days of frustration before it bore fruit. This created an interesting paradigm. You could suddenly access pretty much all the music in the world, but only in drips and drabs. Consequently, I was downloading single tracks. And not albums.Despite growing up in this environment, I would go and buy my favourite artists’ albums on CD, because while I knew that while a track was a decent starter, I needed to enjoy the main course - even as a typically attention-deficient teenager.Fast-forward to 2015, and with fascinating symmetry, playlists have replaced the Napster discovery experience for me, while the album experience remains similar, buying LPs rather than CDs and streaming full albums. This is why bands like The War on Drugs and The National will continue to thrive. They consistently produce wonderful albums that are – to quote Sum 41 – “all killer, no filler”.Suffice to say, I never took the plunge to buy Hooray for Boobies. And in hindsight, it was probably the right choice. Chris Duncan LiS 69
