The Lodge House Surface Mine is locatedin Derbyshire and covers an area of 122 Ha. The site tonnage is justover 1 million tonnes which is being recovered over a period of fourand a half years. The coal, being mined from five seams iscrushed, blended and transported to Ratcliffe Power Station some30km south. Delegates will see how the mining operations conform tothe highest environmental standards as well as the use of appropriatemining equipment ancillary plant for stripping soils and coal recovery.

Drax Power StationDrax Power Station, owned and operated by

Drax Power Limited, the operating subsidiary of Drax Group plc, is thelargest, cleanest and most efficient coal-fired power station in the UK.With a capacity of 4,000MW, Drax currently meets around 7% of theUK's electricity needs, enough to power some 6 million homes. Thetour of the power station will allow delegates to see at first hand thework Drax is undertaking to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide andplay its part in the transition towards a low carbon economy, as wellas gain an understanding of Drax's commitment to reducing itsenvironmental impact overall. Two major carbon abatement projectsare well underway at the power station: The £100m turbine upgrade -the largest steam turbine modernisation project in UK history; and the£80m construction of a 400MW co-firing facility - the largest co-firingproject in the world. Alongside the power station's existing 100MWco-firing capability, these two projects will reduce the station's carbondioxide emissions by up to 17.5% compared to 2006 levels, or overthree and a half million tonnes each year.

Delegates will be able to follow the complete electricity generationprocess from coal delivery through to electricity delivery to the nationalelectricity transmission network. This will include a visit to themerry-go-round system used for coal delivery by train, the powerstation's massive turbine hall, and the state-of-the-art control room atthe heart of the operation.
