someone could leave him.
He loves to run freely in
the backyard and go on
long walks. My daughter,
Michelle and I (his new
dad named Mike), take
him and his new friend
Sadie, everyday for a walk,
unless it is raining. He has
a little fear of ceiling fans.
Every time he walks by
them, he stares at them.
We don’t know why, but it
is really cute. When the
other dogs are being loved
on, he will go over to one
of us to be loved on. He is
just a cool dog. He also
has gotten so close to
Missy, his new mom. He
lays with her in her chair.
It is safe to say, he loves his
new, forever home.
Chico was found with his
best friend Poncho, who is
still for adoption, running
loose in the middle of a
central Lubbock
neighborhood. Chico had
been badly beaten up by
another dog and his face
had numerous bite wounds
and was completely
swollen. After some
antibiotics and steroids ,
he healed very well. He
lived at the kennel for a
few months until a
wonderful family decided
they wanted to adopt him.
He lives with another
rescue pit bull named
Sadie and a senior
Rottweiler.
His new name is now
Tank, which fits him so
nicely. He got to go to a
carnival and loved all the
attention he received while
he was there, especially
from all of the kids he
encountered.
His new family says, “Since
we adopted Tank, he has
been nothing but great.
It’s hard to believe that

CRITTERFEST
Science Spectrum holds an
annual Critterfest event
where people can see tigers,
elephants, camels, reptiles,
dogs and other small
critters. The children get
to learn about all of the
animals. We were fortunate
enough to be a part of it this
year. We were able to show
off some of our adoptable
pets. We also were
privileged to bring Shami
(shown here) to allow some
of the participants to see
how wonderful pit bull’s
personalities are as well as
how great they can be in
public, especially around
children.

It makes the dogs so
happy :)
Ursa (pictured left) is a Katrina
survivor who was only a puppy when
the hurricane hit. She is an active
dog that loves to play ball. She is
protective of her environment. She
is cautious with strangers at first,
but warms up quickly, esp. if you
take her for a walk :). She can be
with other dogs under supervision.
She has had two surgeries for
bilateral inguinal hernias so she is
somewhat of a special needs dog.
Yoda (pictured right) was found in
the back of an abandoned field with
a huge chain and padlock. The chain
had to be cut with bolt cutters. She
is about 2-3 years old and only
weighs 28 pounds. She would love to
have a forever home alone or with
another male dog.
catching on quickly to potty
training and fitting in well
with the other dogs. She
does great on the leash and
loves to play in water. She
is mostly an inside dog and
sleeps on her pillow at
night in the house. She is
very playful and full of
energy. Her new family
says she is a wonderful new
addition to their home.
Marsha was found on
Marsha Sharp Freeway
laying against her dead
brother who had been hit by
a car. It was so sad, but we
are glad she is getting a new
chance at a good life.
Her new family says that she
is doing amazing and fits
perfectly into their new
family, just like she was
meant to be there. She is

"The shelters that do adopt
out pit bulls are completely
overloaded and must often
euthanize them because they
are not able to find them
good homes. The lucky ones
spend months, sometimes
years, rotting behind bars on
a cold cement floor." -

Orion was in a litter of
puppies who were
abandoned, without
food and water, in a TV
box, inside an old shed
when it was extremely
cold. Some sweet
people called who found
them, so we went to
pick them up. They
were very dirty, cold
and hungry. Orion was
one of the lucky one’s
out of the litter who
found his forever home.
Orion’s new owner has
this to say about him,
“Orion, or Ori as I like
to call him, is a pure joy
in my life. He is loyal,
sweet and an all around
great dog! He and I
regularly spend time
together, either
watching TV, taking
walks or playing in the
backyard. He was right
around 22 pounds when
I first got him and I've
enjoyed every minute of
him growing to be the
55 pound beast (with a
tender heart) that he is
today! We spend tons of
time together. He is a
ladies man and we even
share a bed (he gets
most of it) and he is as
happy as can be!
raw and infected from too-tight
collars. Dog tethers can also
easily become entangled with
other objects, choking or
strangling the dogs to death.
Chaining is an extreme
safety hazard for people.
Dogs naturally feel protective
of their territory. When
confronted with a perceived
threat, they respond according
to their fight-or-flight instinct.
Chaining is inhumane and
unsafe for dogs.
Dogs are, by nature, social
beings who thrive on interac-
tion with people and other
animals. A dog kept chained in
one spot for months or years
suffers immense psychological
damage. A continuously
chained dog usually becomes
neurotic, anxious, and
aggressive. In many cases, the
necks of chained dogs become
A chained dog, unable to take
flight, often feels forced to
fight. A study by the Centers
for Disease Control found that
chained dogs are 2.8 times
more likely to bite. The
dogs most likely to bite are
male, unneutered and chained.
Tragically, the victims of
chained dog attacks are usually
children.

STEPHEN AND ORION
The Number 1 United States Customs Dog
is an American Pit Bull Terrier named
Popsicle. How did he get that name? He
was found during a drug bust in a freezer
where he had been left to die after being
used as a bait dog for dog fighting.
"While it's true that
euthanasia numbers are
still too high in shelters
all across the country,
the blame is on
overpopulation; too
many dogs being born
and never enough
homes to absorb them."
- BadRap.org
She goes out to play with a few of
the other male resident dogs. She
was taken to Hillcrest to pose for
pictures and she did great around
all of the action and new people
that were busy around her. She
needs a loving, forever home where
she can spend the rest of her days.
She does great on walks, but she
cannot go as far as others. If you
would like to meet her or just
come out and spend time with her,
please let us know. She would love
to meet you.
Gimp was found running with a
bassett hound named Elvis and ran
up to one of our friend’s houses so
they called us for help. The bassett
was returned to his home, but poor
Gimp’s owner’s never responded to
her ads to reclaim her. She is
another pit bull statistic with no
microchip, tag, etc. She has one
back leg without a paw and the
other back leg only has 2 toes. This
is most likely due to a genetic
deformity. She is extremely sweet
and loves attention. She would do
well with a dog of the opposite sex.

We are a trio of friends that have bonded together through our love for dogs. Within our group, we have a groomer/boarding kennel owner, a vet tech and a pharmacist with a love for animals. We have multiple conforma-tion and obedience titles between us, which gives us a great insight in to the soundness of temperament and struc-ture in the dogs we rescue. We live in a city that has a huge over population issue in dogs, and a lack of city budget to help remedy the situation. Our lo-cal shelter does the best they can, but are in constant need of outside help to get the huge number of dogs, espe-cially pit bulls, that come through there doors get placed. We are a rescue contact for our city shelter and do the best we can to help these deserving dogs get homes. We have no outside funding, so we are only able to take on a few dogs at a time due to budget restraints. We want the dogs we rescue to end up in forever homes. Therefore, we are particular about where these dogs go.
