Editor Report – Kerry King Welcome to the first edition of the DIA SA News Letter, an initiative implemented by the new DIA SA committee, my name is Kerry King and I will be writing this newsletter for you on a bi-monthly basis. As you may or may not be aware recently the DIA SA voted against joining the National DIA and to attempt to go it alone. For our decision to be successful we need to make a lot of changes to benefit the SA members. Long term secretary John Brownsea from the State Retailer Association offered to take us in our journey forward, however the proposal John put to the Management Committee was to see his fees double from $4000 to $8000. After much consideration and disappointment it was decided by the Management committee to vote against John’s contract being renewed. Peter Corones was voted in as Protem Secretary until a new Secretary can be obtained. The new look DIA SA will be taking on many changes now and hopefully for the better. The current committee have implemented many changes that will be presented to the SA members soon. The Management Committee will be sharing the duties of the former Secretary on a voluntary basis, alone saving the Association $8000 per year. Our plan is to build on our membership by liaising with members more frequently on a face to face basis, offer regular training days, develop a website for members to access information from, provide a customer complaints contact, and an industrial relations contact. We hope to communicate more effectively through a regular bi-monthly News letter and regular site visits. As part of the move forward, we need to design a logo for the DIA SA, we are asking you the members to participate in this, by offering a a prize for “Dinner for Two” venue TBC for the best design submitted for judging. The Management Committee will not be participating in this it will be up to the members only. This is an exciting time for the DIA SA I hope we can all work together to make this association beneficial for our members.
President Report - Paul Nemer Welcome to the first edition of our electronic news letter and our new state office run by the members for the members. The new committee will be a hands on committee working together to provide a friendly approach to supporting the members of our industry. Moving forward united we hope to provide the industry with more social events for members to network with each other, regular training days, communication through this news letter, in addition provide help and assistance with customer complaints and industrial issues by sourcing professionals specific to our needs. Over the next few months you will see many changes, including our own website that you will be able to access freely, and with your help develop our own new logo through our “Design the DIASA logo” competition. It is our expectation to actively involve our members to meet their needs. Change is always difficult, however if we work together we can make this transition an easy stress free process. I look forward to hearing your thoughts, remember this news letter will be a great communication tool, so write to your editor with your thoughts or articles.
Secretary Report - Peter Corones This is the first edition of our new look electronic News Letter. As you can see it is in colour and it contains much more information about activities going on in our industry and in our state than has ever been presented before. This publication is the result of the efforts of Committee Representative, Kerry King and she is to be congratulated on this inaugural edition. It will be distributed to all members on a bi-monthly basis via email. So if you don’t have an email address it is important to get one; if you don’t know how, then contact Kerry or myself and we will be only too happy to arrange one for you at no charge. This form of publication will save our trees!! We would like this News Letter to become the Member’s Media. By this I mean we would encourage all members (including Allied Traders) to send in interesting articles and information that are newsworthy and we will publish it. So, if you have a new machine or a new baby then tell us (with photos), and we will tell everyone in the industry via the News Letter. Not only do we want to provide you with useful information and important news, but also we would like to brighten up your day. All of us are often too busy to interact with other members of the industry so here is your chance to talk to your fellow members and ask questions and swap ideas without having to leave the shop. You will get to know your fellow members and they will get to know you; it is important to know that you are not alone and that your good news and sometimes bad news stories can be shared with others and you will be amazed at the support and interest you will generate. I commend this publication to you all and hope you will read it with interest and from time to time make your own contributions. We look forward to hearing about your news as much as we hope you enjoy reading about everyone else’s news. We are a relatively small industry group and regular communication is the most important way that we can all stay informed, interested and united. From the desk of your pro-tem Secretary and Vice-President.
Competition “Design the DIA SA Logo”

“Spotting Course”
Recently at DC Cleaning Supplies, member TRLASA & DIASA – Nando Focareta
provided his premises for training. In conjunction with the DIA and Stelco, tafesa run
a nationally accredited spotting course.
PERFORM PRE AND POST SPOTTING
With Professional Spotter - Ian Griffith ‘Stelco” Melbourne
A huge thank you to member Dick Kubiac “Richmond Electrical” for donating his time
and effort in setting up a spotting table for us to use on the day.
We conducted the training on a Sunday due to the availability of dry cleaners, as most
all work a 6 day week.
The day was very successful.
We had approximately 25 people in attendance, including 3 from Mount Gambier and
all enjoyed a FREE lunch over at the local watering hole.
The night before the training I deliberately stained some to assist in the training, I
used various garments of various fabric type and stained them with the following;
Coffee
Red wine
Grass
Biro
Nail Polish
In groups of 5-6, people were given a garment to assess to determine the stain. They
were given a document to work through covering the stain identification method
FOCAL -
Feel, Odour, Colour, Appearance & Location.
This will explain some of the following photos, smelling the stains.
Everyone participated really well and was very much engrossed in determining the
stain.
Once the stains were identified the correct spotting agent and cleaning process was to
be determined.
The great thing about these training days is that you get dry cleaners attend that have
more than 30 years experience, and new comers that have been in the industry for
less than 2 years. Networking with so many experienced people is the ideal training
scenario.
Above: Ian demonstrated some spotting techniques, here using a brush to loosen the
stain from the fibres.
Below: Ian demonstrates feathering using the steam gun.
Tafesa and the Dry Cleaning Institute of SA plan to have regular training days, and
plan to cover topics such as Spotting, Finishing, Pressing, Customer Service, Safe
handling of Solvents, Care Labelling, Fibres and Fabrics etc.
If anyone is interested in attending please contact myself Kerry King on 0421054025.
In addition if anyone has a specific topic they would like to have training in, we may
be able to arrange it for you.
