CHAPTER

1GEOMETRICAL SHAPES

AND SOLIDS

Plane Figures

Shapes are either two-dimensional shapes or flat plane geometrical shapes. Plane figures made of lines are called polygons. Triangle and square are examples of polygons.

Properties of Some Basic Two Dimensional Shapes

Quadrilateral Pentagon

Rectangle Circle

Triangle

Square

Circle

Ø It has no sides and no corners.

Ø Opposite sides are parallel.Ø All sides are equal.Ø All angles are right angles(90°).

Square Rectangle

Opposite sides are Ø equal and parallel.

All angles are right Ø angles(90°).

Triangle Triangle

It has 3 sides and Ø 3 vertices/corners.

A quadrilateral is a polygon Ø with four edges (or sides) and four vertices/corners.

Pentagon

It has 5 sides and Ø 5 vertices/corners.
