CONCENTRATIONS

Faith – Exodus is a faith-based organization founded and operated upon the idea that despite the many obstacles

they face, with faith the formerly incarcerated can transition back into society successfully when given access to the right resources and tools. Exodus believes that even if one is employed, connected with their family, and ticking all the tangible boxes of “success”, if the spiritual void is not filled, the risk of recidivism still looms large.

Funding – Exodus utilizes monies from foundations, private sector partners, government entities, and individual

supporters to sustain its operational centers and programs.

Leadership – Executive Director, Julio Medina served a 12-year prison sentence before founding Exodus. His leadership

is informed by real life experience and demonstrates what is possible and what works for the formerly incarcerated. Having walked in the same shoes as so many of Exodus’s participants, he serves as their most credible messenger.

Orientation and Contract:All Exodus participants complete a 2-week program orientation. Orientation consists of a series of workshops, including employment readiness and job search training. The objective is to help them set short-term goals to combat the hopelessness and despair of the early post-release period. The orientation process focuses on guiding participants toward concrete accomplishments to demonstrate that they can take control of their future. The Exodus Contract that they sign at the beginning of orientation holds them accountable to achieving the goals they set in the areas of employment, education, fatherhood/family, spirituality, health/physical fitness, and community involvement.

Employment – Many participants, despite a limited work history or complete lack of formal work experience, have a number of valuable transferable skills that can be applied to fulfilling

legal employment. This area of the contract helps participants think about how they will use their existing skills to support themselves financially in the short term, and provides training and advisement on how to move from a job into a career in the long term.

Education – One of the major barriers to successful re-entry is a lack of formal education credentials. Many participants come to Exodus

without a GED, or with a GED but no higher education or specialized training. This can impact their employability, earning potential, even confidence going into an interview. This area of the contract asks participants to think about how they would like to grow intellectually as well as expand their career horizons through education, and assist them in finding a tutor, registering for classes, and scheduling exams.

Fatherhood/Family – Though one might believe that employment is the most important part of the Exodus Contract, the Fatherhood/Family life area is often even more critical to

successful re-entry. Family re-integration can be difficult after long periods away. For participants with children, re-establishing their connections and roles as parents can be challenging, confusing, and emotional. This area of the Exodus Contract focuses on helping participants establish healthy connections with their significant others, children and those closest to them by acknowledging and meeting the potential difficulties head-on.

Health & Fitness – Sound physical and mental health is a key component for successful re-entry

after prison. However, after years of minimal and often sub-standard medical and dental care, many formerly incarcerated individuals are reluctant to seek medical attention due to bad experiences with the health care system in prison. Alcohol and substance abuse can also quickly lead back to prison or jail if not dealt with in a serious and immediate manner. Finally, though the need for medical care is clear, gaining access to benefits such as Medicaid can be confusing and overwhelming. This area of the contract asks participants to attend to their health, both physical and mental, by working with a benefits advisor and coach so that they can confront the challenges of the other five life areas in sound body and mind.

Community Involvement – For someone who has spent many years deliberately separated from society, it can be hard to envision a future in which

one is ever a fully reintegrated member of the community. Those on parole are restricted from voting, further making them feel like second-class citizens. The Community Involvement area of the contract focuses participants’ thinking on how they will be not just an employee, a student, or a parent - but how they will approach the important job of being a citizen by helping them find ways to give back.

Spirituality – Attention to one’s spiritual life is an essential component to successful transition. The process of re-entry is fraught with complications

and confusion, leaving one feeling lost and scared, hence the title of this workshop, “Walking Through the Wilderness”. We must rekindle our faith to guide us through these most challenging trials and to help remind us wo we are and who we answer to. The Spirituality area of the contract gives participants a chance to think about how they can grow in whatever faith tradition they follow - or how they can attend to their spirituality even with no faith tradition at all - and how this growth will help them in the other five contract areas.

ACHIEVEMENTOne-on-One Coaching – After the orientation workshops, each participant is matched with an Exodus Contract Coach who works closely with them on an ongoing basis to revise and execute their plan and achieve success.

Re-Entry Success – Core to Exodus’s mission is to provide supportive services that ultimately assist each participant in successfully reintegrating into her or his community and achieve social and economic wellbeing. Exodus has faith that its focus and impact on this population will help break the cycle of recidivism.
