Textbook: Elementary Linear algebra 6 ed. by Larson & Falvo
Text
Larson & Falvo, Elementary Linear algebra 6 ed.
This is an older edition. You should not need to pay more than $20 for it.
Objectives
(Refer to the syllabus)
Exams
2 Mid-term Exams and a Final Exam.
Discovery Labs
This course is partially based on discovery labs.
The main pedagogical principle is that students acquire knowledge through participating in group activities.
It is extremely crucial that you are not late for classes.
Discovery Labs
1. You can earn a maximum of 5 points for each discovery lab.
2. If you are late, the max. points you can get will be reduced according to the following rules:
......1-5 min. late ---> -2 points
......5-10 min, late -->-4 points
......>10 min.---------->-5 points
Class Participation
You can get class participation points by answering questions in class.
There are small group classwork almost everyday.
Class Participation
At the end of the quarter, your grades on class participation will be determined by the above activities and other observations by the instructor.
Class Participation
Please respect your instructor and classmates. Do not talk during the lecture. There will be
time for you to talk. Disruptive and disturbing behavior will not be
tolerated.
Class Participation
No text messaging, web surfing, email sending,……
Turn off your phone before you enter the classroom***.
Expectations - Handouts
You are expected to print and bring your handout to class unless…
you have a tablet that allow you display and write note on a electronic copy of the HO.
Fail to have your HO repeatedly will negatively impact your grade.
Expectations - Labs
Each group is expected to print and bring at least one lab to class unless…
you want to type your solutions and print it out.
One lab report per group. Due 5:50pm at the day of the lab.
Expectations - Solutions
Sufficient and precise solution steps are expected.
Do not skip steps. Pay attention to instructions given to you
in class, handout, and feedback from labs and homework.
Points Distribution
Exam 1 100 points
Exam 2 100 points
Final 60 points
Discovery Labs 60 points
Homework 70 points
Class Participation 10 points
Final Class Grade
90% A Range
80% B Range
70% C Range
60% D Range
Below 60% E
Missing Classes
You are responsible to catch up all the materials if you miss classes for whatever reasons (sickness, family issues, family Hawaii vacation, etc).
The instructor will not "re-teach" the lecture in any form including special appointments.
Make-Up Policies
If a student has a documented conflict that will prevent him or her from taking an exam at the scheduled time, he/she must arrange IN ADVANCE with the instructor to take the exam early.
Study Hints
Studying in groups is an efficient way to learn mathematics.
Pre-class Reading (2.5 hours)
ClassPost-class Study, homework
(6-8 hours)
There are tutorials in the CD-ROM comes with the textbook.

Why Study Linear Algebra?
Why Study Linear Algebra?
Two most important math subjects that you can learn in college
Calculus, Linear Algebra
Technologically Speaking...
Calculus is (more or less) about “hardware”. Linear Algebra is (more or less) about “software”.
GPS (Not in Details)
Need 4 satellites. 4 measurements
of distance. Not accurate due
to “clock errors”. (Satellites have atomic clocks, but receivers do not!)
Therefore the “Pseudorange Equations”

For a moving vehicle, the coordinates need to be refresh very often.
Need efficient ways to do this!
