President's Letter By Virginia Horowitz, President

AAUW AT THE STATE ASSEMBLY What do our state and national dues help support?

From time to time members ask me what their state and national AAUW dues provide to our local members and to all members in general. I have wondered that myself. I am becoming more and more aware of the influence state and national AAUW leaders have on decisions made by legislative bodies. Our dues help support those efforts in so many ways! Here is an example: AAUW of California was asked to speak at a committee hearing of the State Assembly. The subject of the hearing was Title IX at 45 years. Who are you going to call if you need a Title IX expert? Why, Alicia Hetman, of course! (Alicia is Vice-Chair of AAUW.) Alicia gave an overview of the laws that have been passed over the years. The Title IX law that was sponsored by Senators Patsy Mink and Birch Bayh in 1972 provided for “the non-discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs or activities receiving federal financial assistance.” Later the sexual harassment law was passed as part of Title IX so that women have some legal recourse to prevent harassment at work and school. The current Secretary of Education has rescinded most of the Title IX rules on sexual harassment. In her speech, Alicia gave the State Assembly committee a number of recommendations to keep Title IX strong. This is a call to action for all of us. Click HERE to see her speech. Her part starts at about 18 minutes. If the link does not work, paste this into your browser: http://calchannel.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=7&clip_id=6036&fbclid=IwAR1xbUXhBAXlYiufJrlW19Okfe1IDeGUcSKbCZ3TBbDPhWSI5m-Mgrhy-KU

Our Membership dues for 2019-2020 will be due soon. Remember the broad AAUW influence you help to support through your dues. Your donation along with those of all of our Branch members reaches far past Nevada County. We can be proud of AAUW, local, state, and national and for belonging to it! We are making a difference!

April Board Highlights By Susie Monary-Wilson,

Secretary

The Board met on Wednesday, April 17th.

We agreed to change board meetings time from 1 to 3 PM to 2 to 4 PM to accommodate several requests. The board approved a new standing committee position, Fundraiser Event Coordinator to lead our annual fundraising event activities. Bup will act in this capacity for 2019 and we'll be looking for volunteers for 2020. Joanne Weatherly and Cheryl Morris joined us to provide the annual report for the AAUW-NC Charitable Trust. They have done an excellent job along with board member and fellow trustee, Ann Shulse in working with the Trust's financial advisor, Kim Zwick , to develop our investment policy. The next Board meeting will be May 15th at 2:00pm at Brunswick Village. Board meetings are held monthly on the Wednesday prior to the Saturday general meeting, September through May, 15th from 2 to 4 m at Brunswick Village Assisted Living Community in the conference room. All members are welcome to attend!

Branch Meetings By Fran Erickson, Co-VP Program

IDEAS FOR GENERAL BRANCH MEETING PROGRAMS FOR NEXT YEAR Please circle your top six choices and mail this page to AAUW-NC, Box 326, Grass Valley, CA 95945. We will do our best to fulfill your wishes. 1. Women’s health services and access for reproductive choices. Possible presenters would be from Citizens for Choice which subsidizes the local clinic for health and reproductive care for women, girls and even men, with the hope that one of the people from Chico’s Women’s Health Services would speak to the problems facing clinics that are pro-choice. The Women’s Health Services provides the nursing professionals to staff the clinic here in Grass Valley. The topic would focus on the issues that clinics face now and the pertinent legislation and Federal edicts. 2. Fire Prevention. Speakers would be sought from local professionals involved in this issue. 3. Women in Local Public Positions -non-traditional if possible. We would approach such people as Shannon Moon, Hillary Hodge, Allison Lehman ( the County CEO) and other agencies. 4. Financial and emotional impact of the death or chronic illness of a spouse or life partner. This would focus on what women need to do to take care of the myriad financial aspects as well as have some focus on what kind of emotional support is available in the community. 5. Tech Trekkers/Local Scholarship. Have one of many exceptional young ladies come and speak to us about how their AAUW-funded experiences have impacted on their lives and inform us of where they are in their journey and their goal(s) for the future. 6. Kellea Miller, Ph.D, Sociology with an emphasis in Women’s Studies. She is a colleague of Anya Stanger, who recommended her. Dr. Miller’s work has been in the field of funding grants for women--helping communities of women from all over the world to get money for the projects they want. She does this with the aim that an illiterate woman from a rural area has the same opportunity to win a grant as a fancy application with all the right words. 7. Pay Equity 8. Community Beyond Violence — domestic violence issues and services whose clients are women and children. Tracy Pepper, one of our former members, approached us about giving a presentation. 9. Chinese history and contributions in Nevada County, especially women. 10. LGBT — What are the realities of being LGBT in our Community. Emphasis on youth. Our goal in searching out programs is to include programs that reflect the goals of the National AAUW. We also want to put a spotlight on the local experiences of women and girls in our community, as well as provide programs that would support our members in their daily lives.

Tech Trek Update By Martha Rees

Introducing our 2019 Nevada County Tech Trekkers … After reviewing 28 nominations, applications, and essays (for girls from nine different local public schools/public charters), followed by an equal number of interviews, the Tech Trek Committee is pleased to announce our 2019 Tech Trek finalists: Kya Bommersbach, Chicago Park; Gina Genovese, Magnolia; Melina Handon, Seven Hills; Mei Lin Heirendt, Grass Valley Charter; Angela Martinez, Lyman Gilmore; Sidney Pixley, Union Hill; and Madilyn Thaggard, Lyman Gilmore. The alternates are Sara Sullivan, Seven Hills, and Amarah Cox, Lyman Gilmore.

I can’t say enough about our Tech Trek Committee members who participated in the selection process: Michelle Baker, Bonnie Curtis, Fran Erickson, Stephanie Facchini, Chriss Hood, Candy Jewett, Penny Savelly, Jo Ann Schilling, Kathy Scott, Ann Shulse, Bernadette Sylvester, and Carole Yettick. They continue to demonstrate a true commitment not only to the success of the program, but to provide a positive experience for all the girls who are nominated. Once again it was very tough, we had so many incredibly bright and uniquely deserving nominees.

We will be recognizing our new Tech Trekkers as well as their teachers and our sponsors at a recognition event on May 7th at the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools office. On the Tech Trek @ UC Davis front: AAUW Nevada County Branch will be well represented at this summer’s camp with member Stephanie Facchini once again serving as Dorm Mom Coordinator and fellow members Candy Jewett and Michelle Baker also volunteering as Dorm Moms. Plus we received word that 2016 NC Trekker Allison Johnson will be a junior counselor at this summer’s Tech Trek @ UC Davis.

2019 STEAM Expo: We Can Do It! Full STEAM Ahead …

For the third year in a row, AAUW Nevada County was among the organizations and companies participating in the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools (NCSOS) STEAM Expo for students throughout the county, and

their families and friends. Through posters and product displays, the branch brought home the message of women’s role in science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM). Around the world and across history, innovative women have imagined, developed, tested, and perfected their creations. Women inventors are behind many of the products and technologies used every day! For example, if you use GPS on your cell phone (Hedy Lamarr and Gladys West), turn on windshield wipers when you drive in the rain (Mary Anderson), clean plates in a dishwasher (Josephine Cochrane), wear non-reflective eye glasses (Katherine Blodgett), or enjoy a scoop of ice cream (Nancy Johnson), you can thank the women behind them! Who knew that a woman (Stephanie Kwolek) invented Kevlar used in bullet-proof vests? Those who visited our booth now know about all of these women and more.

Piggybacking on the branch’s theme of inspiration, booth visitors also had the chance to share “Who or What Inspires You?” as well as make INSPIRE bracelets, hair clips, or backpack tags with ultraviolet (UV) visible beads that turned from white to color under UV black lights or out in the sunshine. Thanks to the AAUW Nevada County “village” that came together to make our participation in this event possible. From helping with planning, scouting for items to display, creatively setting up the booth and displays, volunteering during the event, and pitching in to clean up, this cracker-jack group included Laurie

Alire, Deb Cubberley, Jeanne Duerst, Stephanie Facchini, Bup Greenwood, Virginia Horowitz, Candy Jewett, Stephanie Owyoung, Ann Shulse, Kathy Smith, and Shirley Zeff. Plus thanks goes out to our former Tech Trekkers who volunteered (a couple on the same day as their junior prom) and who welcomed visitors to the booth and helped youngsters make their UV bead creations: Olivia DesAutels, Isabel Luke, Allison Johnson, Annabelle Owyoung, Eva Zlimen (and her friend, Zara). As our booth slogan stated: We Can Do It! Full STEAM Ahead! ________________________________________________________________________________

Local Scholarships By Susan Fivelstad

This 2018-2019 year has been terrific for AAUW! We enjoyed a wonderful new fundraiser, Tapas & Trivia, which also allowed AAUW to become more visible in our neighborhoods of Grass Valley and Nevada City. We have introduced 2018 recipients to you. We hope it feels like you know them and their goals. Tapas & Trivia…and your continuing support with donations…gives us a baseline for 2019-2020 scholarships. Thank you! The Local Scholarship committee has received great emails and letters from our recipients. Here are two recent mailings.

Excerpts from Ashley Votaw, our Re-Entry recipient of $2,000. She is attending Sacramento State where she is majoring in Accounting. She is commuting from Nevada City several days a week and is a single mom. She has already completed the Fall 2018 semester and is now in the throes of Spring 2019. She is incredibly thankful for the grants she received from us. Her Fall term “was a major time of transition in my educational experience”. She learned a lot about herself and how to balance home and school. She learned about “memes” and a video conferencing tool called Zoom. She survived a car accident and “still managed to get straight A’s”. In her current semester she is taking Intermediate Accounting, Cost Accounting, Principals of Marketing, and a philosophy class called History of Ethics. She thanks the “Wonderful Women of AAUW” for all of our continued support. (And our thanks to Ann Shulse, Ashley Votaw’s AAUW Scholarship Liaison for this communication.) Ann switched hats to bring us this missive. Andrea Beltran, who earned a scholarship in 2018, has taken a gap year before heading east to Harvard this fall. She sent this update to Ann as head of the high school scholarship group.

“Hello Ms. Shulse, I'm very excited to start school at Harvard. As soon as I get my enrollment verification I'll let you know. This gap year has helped me in many ways. I have done some of the things I planned to do, along with some other experiences that I have been fortunate to undergo. In November I did a product design/development job shadowing at Capital One where my older sister works. During this time I conducted a UI/UX audit of credit monitoring tool, CreditWise, on mobile web, desktop web, and iOS platforms, and presented findings and provided recommendations of visual design improvements. I also conducted a report of competitors’ missions and visions to create navigation concepts. They were impressed with my work, and I was actually offered a design internship during the summer of 2020. I was able to learn so much about not only product design and development, but also my own interests and what concentration I might be interested in pursuing to achieve certain career paths. I have also been mentoring a student who is now taking three AP classes in her sophomore year of high school. In my free time, I have also continued to try to push myself intellectually by taking some online classes of interest to me like Intro to Neuroscience and Applied Calculus. Thank you, Andrea Beltran" AAUW, you help grow our wonderful scholars. You provide support for the scholarships AAUW offers. We will give four high school scholarships, one to a graduate of Sierra College, and one-to-four re-entry scholarships. We address both four-year colleges and certificate programs. Currently, the various scholarships are one-time awards. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if they could grow? Let’s see what 2019-2020 will bring.

AAUW Fund News By Melanie Heckel, AAUW Funds VP

This month I would like to focus on the Legal Advocacy Fund, as its work is so important. LAF has recently adopted a new case: Jane Doe, et al v. Howard University, a case involving six current and former Howard University female students who reported sexual assaults in 2014, 2015, and 2016. They allege that these assaults were committed by male employees and students at the university. These young women asserted that they experienced discrimination in violation of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits sex discrimination in education, requiring that schools prevent and remedy known sexual harassment and violence. According to their claim, Howard violated Title IX by failing to promptly investigate their complaints of sexual assault, ignoring the university’s own policy prohibiting sex discrimination. Title IX stipulates that schools must act when they learn about incidents of sexual harassment and that students should not have to endure repeated sexual assaults before the school intervenes. Yet, an increasing number of universities across the country have asserted that they do not need to respond to reports of sexual misconduct unless a student experiences a subsequent incident of harassment of violence. What sense does that make? How wrong is that? This case has been added to similar cases that LAF is already supporting through amicus briefs: Weckhorst v. Kansas State University and Kollaritsch vs. MSU Board of Trustees. Thank goodness AAUW is willing to go to bat to assist these victims. Another important case is Moussouris v. Microsoft, brought on behalf of a class of current and former female Microsoft employees who have been disadvantaged by Microsoft’s pay and promotion systems. The U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington denied class certification of their Title VII gender discrimination class action. The plaintiffs sought to appeal the decision and AAUW signed on to help. On September 20, 2018, the Ninth Circuit granted permission to appeal the decision denying class action certification. AAUW joined amicus briefs in this case because we advocate for equitable access and advancement in employment, including vigorous enforcement of employment discrimination statutes and the right to challenge discriminatory employment practices through class actions. What can you do to help? Donate to AAUW Funds Nevada County, and specify your designation for LAF. (See form on page 16)

DUES, DUES, DUES! Your membership is so important to our branch. Please do plan to keep your membership current by sending in your dues check within the next few weeks. If for some reason you feel that you are not satisfied with your AAUW Nevada County Branch experience, please consider giving me a call. Together let’s see if we can make the branch experience more fulfilling for you. If you have any questions or concerns about the dues, please give me a call or email me. If the dues are just too much for your budget, consider giving what you can and requesting help for the remainder from the Angel Fund. It is all confidential. We don’t want to lose you. Thank you for your membership this last year. I believe that it was a terrifically successful and fruitful year for our branch. ______________________________________________________________________________

Nevada County Branch Public Policy By Carolyn Feuille In our branch’s Member Survey Public Policy Priorities, completed last December, the highest priority of concern to our members was the issue of civil rights for women and the LGBTQ community. AAUW advocates in favor of strengthening protection to people from unfair treatment because of their gender identity or sexual orientation. AAUW finds that our nation’s civil rights laws must be updated to protect everyone. We can all take part in getting legislation passed to prohibit such discrimination. Read on! Standing Up Against Discrimination Toward Women and LGBTQ Community The Equality Act of 2019 (H.R. 5/S. 788) is a bill just introduced in the United States Congress. If passed, the Equality Act would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing, public accommodations, public education, federal funding, credit, and the jury system. In addition, the bill would update our civil rights laws to provide important new protections against sex discrimination, including on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, in public spaces, by providers of goods and services, and by entities that take federal dollars. This means that women who experience sexual harassment on public transportation, in restaurants or in stores would have a remedy; breastfeeding mothers couldn’t be excluded from public spaces; and pharmacists couldn’t refuse to fill someone’s birth control prescription.

Take Action: E-mail your Members of Congress (MOC’s) to co-sponsor H.R. 5/S. bill 788, the Equality Act of 2019. 1. Search in your browser: AAUW two-minute activist. Click on the first entry on the page that comes up (title is Two-Minute Activist: AAUW). 2. This brings you to the Take Action page. Scroll down to the Two-Minute Activist section and under the Civil Rights heading, click on the first sub-heading “Stand Up Against Discrimination”. 3. Follow the instructions to fill out the form letter to your MOC’s. (Street number and name = your street address.) Personalize your message with an example of the problems the Equality Act addresses. We need your action against discrimination! This bill has already generated opposition. Use the Take Action page to ask MOC’s to support the bipartisan EMPOWER Act to fight against workplace harassment, and to stop attacks on reproductive rights by opposing bills to ban abortions and cutting funds to Planned Parenthood.
