One in particular was the inaugural Lunch & Learn program held in February. The group came together over lunch to watch “A Class Divided.” The documentary exam- ines the impact of an experiment conducted on chil- dren in 1968 by Jane Elliott, a third grade teacher in the rural, all-white town of Riceville, Iowa. In the days following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in April 1968, the students of Ms. Elliott’s third grade class were confused and upset. They had made King their “Hero of the Month,” and they couldn’t understand why someone would kill him. Ms. Elliott decided to teach her class the meaning of discrimination. EAPD’s New Jersey Office Staff Diversity Committee has recently coordinated on several initiatives. One in particular was the inaugural Lunch & Learn program held in February. The group came together over lunch to watch “A Class Divided.” The documentary exam-ines the impact of an experiment conducted on chil-dren in 1968 by Jane Elliott, a third grade teacher in the rural, all-white town of Riceville, Iowa. In the days following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in April 1968, the students of Ms. Elliott’s third grade class were confused and upset. New Jersey Attorneys Being Honored - Congratulations in order for Barbara Lee and Paulette Brown

Barbara Lee will be honored on April 28, with the Al-ice Paul Equality Award. This honor is given to those who capture the spirit of Alice Paul, thus continuing, either directly or indirectly, her mission of advanc-ing women’s equality in America. Alice Paul, a New Jersey native, was a leader of the women’s suffrage movement in both the US and England between 1907 and the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920, which gave women the right to vote. She was jailed for her political activism in both England and the US, and she was instrumental in persuading then-President Woodrow Wilson to support the Nine-teenth Amendment. She also worked for women’s equal rights abroad, founding the World Woman’s Party, which established the United Nations Com-mission on the Status of Women. She authored the Equal Rights Amendment and led a coalition that added sex as a protected class within Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Her home in Mt. Laurel, NJ is a national historic landmark. Well done!

Paulette Brown will be honored with the prestigious Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award. Widely considered to be the most impressive recognition for a woman lawyer, the award is conferred each year to just five attorneys in the United States. Established in 1991, the award honors and celebrates the accomplishments of women lawyers and jurists, recognizing their leadership roles in the legal community. In conferring the award, the American Bar Association Commission on Women in the Profession selected Paulette and her co-recipients from a pool of dozens of highly accomplished nominees. The awards ceremony will take place on August 7, at the American Bar Association annual meeting in Toronto. In addition, Paulette was honored in March by The Network Journal as one of the 25 Most Influential Black Women in Business and by the New Jersey Women Lawyers Association for her continued worked in the support of diversity and inclusion throughout the legal and business community. Well deserved honors!

On March 16, the EAPD women lawyers of the Madison, NJ office hosted Stefanie Conley, the Executive Director of Dress for Success of Morris County, and Barbara Schmidt-Kemp, a member of the Advisory Board of Dress for Success of Morris County. Dress for Success is an international non-profit organi-zation dedicated to promoting the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, career development tools and a network of support. The Madison women lawyers learned about the myriad of ways that profes-sional women can help DFS, including donating gently used business attire and accessories, offering resume writing and job interview counseling, and teaching seminars on a variety of life-skills such as financial literacy, nutrition and good health habits. In addition to having arrived armed with an assortment of business clothing and accessories, which they donated that day to DFS, the Madison women lawyers agreed to sponsor a group (open to men and women) to participate in the Inaugural 5K Power Walk for Dress for Success Morris County to be held on Saturday, May 7 on the grounds of Giralda Farms, EAPD’s office location in Madison.

EAPD was proud to participate as a platinum sponsor of the Massachusetts Black Lawyers Association (MBLA) 2011 Annual Gala. The MBLA truly outdid itself this year with 580 attendees as well as keynote speaker U.S. Attorney General, Eric Holder, who captured the crowd’s attention with his remarks. The annual awards ceremony was led by EAPD attorney and MBLA President-Elect, Dominic Blue. This year’s honorees were Senator Edward Brooke, the first African-American to be elected by popular vote to the U.S. Senate, the Honorable Barbara Dortch-Okara, the first African-American woman appointed to the Massachusetts Superior Court, and Dr. David Hall, the President of the University of the Virgin Islands and the former Dean of the Northeastern University School of Law.

EAPD’s Women’s Business Collaborative (WBC) partnered with BDO’s Women’s Initiative to facilitate a seminar presentation to the clients of Safe Horizon of New York. Since 1978, Safe Horizon has provided support and advocacy for victims of crime and abuse. The program was co-presented by EAPD women and BDO women to the women at the Manhattan Community Program. Discussion topics including personal credit, income tax, and job hunting techniques. It was a pleasure to collaborate with BDO and work with Safe Horizon. Special thanks to Mia Finsness, Julie Sauer and Rachel Jacobson, all EAPD associates resident in the New York office, for working with BDO in the planning and the facilitating the program. We look forward to the next initiative.

Dominic Blue was accepted by the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) as a member of its Fellows Program. Formed in 2009, the LCLD aims to “advance diversity in the legal profession.” The organization comprises managing partners of law firms and cor-porate chief legal officers. The Fellows Program was formed to con-nect diverse up-and-coming attorneys with premiere leaders in the legal industry and present unparalleled networking opportunities.

EAPD’s Teamwork & Diversity Committee and Recruiting Department teamed up to host the Annu-al Law Student Affinity Group on March 29. More than 35 members of the law school student affin-ity groups from Boston College, Boston University, Harvard, Suffolk, Northeastern and New England School of Law gathered at EAPD to hear a panel dis-cussion focused on starting careers in the legal pro-fessional, moving from a law firm to an in-house or governmental role, and overcoming obstacles and challenges. The panel included current and former EAPD attorneys, Daniel Cromack, Office of the Attor-ney General of Massachusetts; Lourdes German, Fidelity Capital Markets Services; Karla Portocar-rero, Fidelity Capital Markets Services; Kory Ander-son-Deasy, EAPD Litigation Department and Louis Mercedes, EAPD Business Law Department who also moderated the panel discussion. Welcoming remarks were given by Gerald Hendrick, EAPD Bos-ton Office Partner-in-Charge and Paulette Brown, EAPD Partner and Chief Diversity Officer.
