SieMaG TecBeRG opeRaTeS iTS own ShafT hoiSTinG inSTallaTionFor the construction of the world‘s largest railway tunnel, 57 km in length, in the Gotthard massif in the Swiss Alps, it was decided to build in parallel from different faces: from both ends as well as from 3 intermediate accesses. One access is provided in the Sedrun area, where a gallery has been driven into the mountain from where a blind shaft is sunk down to the tunneling level. While the tunnel is built, the shaft is used for all material handling and personnel transport needed for the tunneling operations. Further, it is used for the supplies of electrical energy, compressed air, water, and consumables, as well as for fresh air ventilation

and dewatering of the construction areas. All signaling and communication facilities are also installed in the shaft.

SIEMAG TECBERG was awarded the contract for providing and operating the fully automatic shaft-hoisting installation for transport of rock, men, and material.

The shaft has a diameter of 7.9 m and a depth of 821 m. The daily hoisting capacity provides for 6,350 tons of excavated rock in addition to 50 units of material and transport of 960 persons. This capacity requires a 4-rope

Koepe winder with 4,200 kW driving power to operate a rope-guided double-deck cage with 50.8 tons payload and counterweight.

Another single-drum hoisting installation with an auxiliary cage of 1.6 t payload is used for service and emergency evacuation purposes.

The handling of construction materials as well as waste rock is executed by means of large mine cars for continuous transport from the construction site on surface down to the tunneling faces. Due to the importance of this transport task and the high-volume utilization of the shaft, the car-decking equipment at the shaft bottom and in the upper gallery is operated in an automatic mode serving the two decks of the cage.

The mine cars approach the shaft within a train set at both landing levels. There the mine cars are uncoupled and automatically moved towards the shaft by use of friction wheel drive units. Upon arrival of the cage at the landing

levels, at both ends transition platforms are actuated. Then one car is pushed onto the cage, whereby in parallel the car standing on the respective deck is simultaneously pulled out to the other side of the landing.

At the upper gallery, the cars travel from the shaft through the access gallery to the surface where they are emptied.

In order to assure high operational availability, the shaft is equipped with a Rope Clamping and Lifting Device. For rope changing, a 4-rope friction winch for 700 kN rope pull is being used. As an additional safety means, a SIEMAG TECBERG mobile winch is available at site for emergency purposes.

Since 2002, presumably over a period of about 9 years, SIEMAG TECBERG is operating the installation under full responsibility during the complete construction time of the Sedrun section of the tunnel. After the completion of the tunnel construction, SIEMAG TECBERG will be involved in the convertion of the shaft for the final purpose of ventilation.
