ABOUT NOMINET

As an applied research group, the Nominet R&D team is hands-on with a number of applications that address real-world problems. ABOUT THE SMART CITIES PROJECTS SHOWCASE
We brought together a panel of IoT experts, led by Alexandra Deschamps-Sonsino, founder of Designswarm and Good Night Lamp, to review innovative smart city projects from around the world. The expert panel included: Adam Greenfield, author, lecturer and speaker on connected objects, spaces and cities; Andrew Collinge, Assistant Director, Greater London Authority; Ben Hammersley, British Internet Technologist, Journalist, Author and Broadcaster; Jane Katz, Director of International Affairs and Programs, Habitat for Humanity International; and Russell Davies, Director of Digital Strategy at the Co-op, to test whether this was really representative of current smart city thinking.

The UK has been extremely active in offering public funding to corporate-led ‘smart city’ projects but few of these really scale and grow after the funding runs out. The reality is that smart city solutions will come from both the infrastructural angle and organically grown from the ground up. The challenge of a really smart city is to enable both of these approaches to flourish and meet in the middle.
Some projects can sound and feel like they are real, but the reality of implementation can be very difficult and not all projects have a strategic approach to a funding plan.

BREAKDOWN BY PROJECT MATURITY
Smart cities' is just the latest term used to define the use of internet-connected technologies in an urban and city planning context. It also implies that projects using the term represent a diverse set of ideas across a large spectrum of applications.

TOPICS MOST ADDRESSED BY SMART CITY PROJECTS
Nominet looked at nearly 150 projects which self-identify as smart city projects. This is not an exhaustive list and it focuses on the projects, not the cities themselves.
