On your first day at a new school, it is ok if you feel a bit worried or anxious.
When you arrive, you will be greeted on the car park by the Principal or Assistant Head to make sure you are happy. The Teaching Assistant for your class will then either take you to breakfast club or to your new Tutor who will introduce you to your new class mates.
Your Tutor may have some questions and the other pupils will want to get to know you. After you have all been properly introduced, it will be time for lessons.
Throughout the day, staff will make sure you know where to go and what you are doing. At the end of the day the Principal will come and find you to have a quick catch up and answer any questions you may have.
The school day is 8.50am to 3pm. There
is a free breakfast club that’s available
for all students before school starts.

We have people that come in to visit from outside of the school. To keep our students safe we ask them to wear colour lanyards.
All staff at Westbourne School
will wear photo ID on a green
lanyard. This will have STAFF
written on it. Someone wearing a
green lanyard with VISITOR
written on it means that they
have been approved to visit the
school. We are aware of their
We want you to feel safe whilst
you are here at Westbourne with
us. If there is anything troubling
you in school or at home,
however small, you can speak to

Lead (also referred to as a DSL).
DBS checks and they don't have to be accompanied by school
staff. Someone wearing a purple lanyard with VISITOR on it
means that they should have a member of staff with them at all
times. If you see someone on their own and wearing a purple
lanyard, or not wearing one at all, tell a member of staff
immediately.
However, you can talk to any member of staff that you feel
comfortable with.

Our school ethos and behaviour
policy revolves around our core
values, with one of them being
‘respect’.
We promote respect, diversity and
the importance of inclusion in and
around the school. This is reiterated
through our classroom and learning
rules, as well as our behaviour policy.
Members of different faiths or
religions are encouraged to share
their knowledge to enhance learning
within our classrooms and the whole
school environment.
If you want help at school with
any health concerns you can
speak to a member of staff.

Transport arrangements for the students to and from school are the responsibility of the Local Authority and parents/carers. The Local Authority (LA) should send the details of travel arrangements to the School Office prior to the commencement of the placement. It is the responsibility of the parents/carers to inform the LA Transport department of any student absence (due to illness, an appointment, etc.) so they can cancel the taxi.
Parents/carers must inform the School Office if a child (or any member of the family) has had an infectious illness, (e.g. chickenpox, impetigo, etc.) whilst at home.

The possession and use of drugs in school, or travelling to and from school is unacceptable.
Drugs means those that are legal (such as alcohol, tobacco and
solvents, over-the-counter and prescribed drugs) and any illegal
drugs (for example, cannabis). Sanctions for incidents are
consistent with the school’s Behaviour policy.
The school has a firm ‘No Smoking policy’.
This includes cigarettes and any
vaping materials which are not
permitted in school. If you would
like some advice on giving up
smoking you can speak to any
member of staff who will be able
to help you.
Medicines that have been
prescribed for you by your Doctor
or Consultant are acceptable and
are to be handed in to staff at the
School Office or to Teaching
Assistant Becky Stephenson to be
locked away in the Surgery. Staff at
school will make sure that you take
these at the correct times.

This is when pupils stay after school to do any work they missed in the school day.
Who goes to ‘After School Club’? Any pupil who misses lessons without a valid reason, or who behaves in a way which is not acceptable. Where is ‘After School Club’? In a designated classroom in school.
The code of conduct at Westbourne
School is very simple and we expect
pupils to adhere to it at all times:
What happens in ‘After School Club’? Pupils catch up with work provided by their class tutors. How do pupils get home after ‘After School Club?’ Students will be taken home later by teaching or pastoral staff, or will be picked up by their parents/carers.

Learning is in small class groups.
There are many different ways to
learn and gain qualifications.
Our school uniform
consists of black school
trousers or a knee
length skirt, a white
aertex top/ polo shirt, a
black sweatshirt and black shoes, which you are expected to wear
at all times. Information on how to purchase a Westbourne School
sweatshirt is available from the School Office. Credits are earnt
towards your weekly rewards for wearing full uniform each day.
Students have their core academic lessons in
the morning (such as English, Maths and
Science) and more vocational / practical
lessons in the afternoon. We also offer Outdoor
Education and work experience opportunities
with local businesses and establishments.
Westbourne School | 2019 - 2020
Westbourne School — New student handbook (v2)¦ 8
Every student joins a Student Voice group. Each group has a special interest such as charity work, the school environment or behaviour.
Student Voice groups and the Student Council are ways to get your opinions and ideas heard!
The Student Council meets every half term and decisions are made and discussed in a school assembly.
The Student Voice groups discuss issues and make suggestions about school to put forward to the School Council .

You can also earn credits before school, at break and during lunch times. If you work well or do good things during the school day you can earn additional bonus credits. Your credits add up all week and our a way of earning fun activities on a Friday afternoon each week.
All the trips and visits include fun activities.
We will have yearly residential trips that we would like you to take part in with us.
You can earn credits in every lesson. These are for good behaviour and achievement.
We get to go out on a variety of trips. Some are just for the day and others are residential visits.
Westbourne School | 2019 - 2020
Westbourne School — New student handbook (v2)¦ 12
We make sure everyone is safe when using the internet. We have a system on our computers that doesn’t allow you to look at inappropriate websites or social networking sites.
If you bring a mobile phone into school you will be expected to hand it in to staff for safekeeping until you go home.
Mobile phones, hand-held
games or any electronic
devices are not used in the
school.
This might include some additional reading materials, practising
your handwriting or some Maths worksheets.
We expect you to always try your best and to ask
for help if you’re not sure about any of the
homework being set for you.
Your teacher will set homework
for you if they think it will
support your classroom learning.

Westbourne School — New student handbook (v2)¦ 9
Therapy helps you to cope when life gets difficult. Most pupils will attend therapy whilst they are with us.
A therapist is a trained specialist who can help deal with difficult
issues in your life.
If you are referred to therapy to help you, you will meet your
therapist at a regular time and in a safe space. You might meet the
library, or other places around the school.
Therapy can be talking with your therapist, but it can also be
making models, art, dance and movement.
