Explore the herb garden to know the cultures of the tropical regions through the herbs planted and used in the peoples’ everyday lives. The collection in the herb garden showcases the commonly used herbs in traditional medicine practices and also culinary use.

The Brownea street is named after the rows of Brownea macrophylla lining the newly upgraded pathway. The long road leads from the children’s playground towards the centre of the garden and the pavement with its new patterns breaks the monotony, complementing the bright and cheerful blossoms from the Brownea trees.

Although there are forest trees dotted in all areas of the botanical garden, and we consider these as the Heritage Trees, the collection of forest trees have been added in and grouped in one area. They are mainly trees which are of economic importance and those that we are familiar with. It is only a sampling as the tropical rainforest have an enormous number of species.

A new feature added to the garden to give visitors the feel of the tropical rainforest is a large waterfall along Jalan Tembusu. It is also the entry point to the boardwalk and the Fernarium.

The Fernarium spans the whole length of the boardwalk. It has a collection of some of the 100 over species of ferns found in Malaysia. A walk amongst the ferns will give the visitor a feel of the tropical jungle oor.

At the edge of the Heliconia Garden, a small waterfall and sh pond gives a most refreshing sight especially on a hot sunny day. It is a cooling place to take a break from your walks or for visitors a perfect photostop.

The Laman Perdana is an area where one will nd majestic trees, Adansonias and Moringas. There is also a collection of bonsai Kesinai (Streblus asper) and other interesting trees such as the Eucalyptus. It is also a perfect spot for photo shots with the lake in the background apart from other features in the square.

On the way up the steps to the Tun Abdul Razak Memorial, the slopes have been planted with the collection of tropical fruit trees not commonly found in the home garden or orchards. Some of these fruits are sold in the form of commercial products and most of us have never seen the actual fruit. An example is the Garcinia cambogia.

Unusual trees from other parts of the world are planted in the square of Laman Perdana. Adansonias and Moringas that came from Africa could also grow in our tropical climate. A cluster of variegated wrightias can be seen near the conservatory. These trees are obviously old and have been pruned to an unusual shape.

Walk along the boardwalk and under the Tembusu trees to the Pelantar Tembusu or Tembusu decking. Another decking is around the Brazil Nut tree. These deckings gives one a place to see panoramic views of the garden.

Heliconias, with their exotic and showy inorescence and large leaves typies the tropical garden. The collection in the Heliconia Garden showcase species and hybrids that are favourites. The shpond in the garden with a small picture perfect waterfall makes a cool place to relax.

The order Zingiberales consisting of Gingers, species of Costus and Musa has been planted along the slopes adjacent to Jalan Tembusu leading to another member in the order, the heliconias, in the Heliconia Garden. They are planted amongst other foliage plants such as the calatheas, dracaenas and aroids.

Plumerias, although not from this region, are a favourite with garden owners and resorts as they impart a vision of exotic landscapes. The botanical garden has a unique collection of old plumeria trees. They were positioned at the entrance of the Amphitheatre as well as near the lake. A collection of younger trees is also planted in the central area.

The Perdana Botanical Garden is situated within the Tun Abdul Razak Heritage Park in Kuala Lumpur. It has always been a part of the green lung of the city and has a history of over a decade. Originally created as part of a recreational park but planted with collections of tropical plants, the

gardens have been rehabilitated and turned into a Botanical Garden. The garden have not only botanical collections but also houses features that gives the visitors the ambiance of being in a tropical rainforest, despite being in the middle of a bustling metropolis.
