This year’s program is designed to specifically focus on the latest and most exciting advances in the management of heart failure through a series of didac- tic lectures, case presentations and debates. Topics that will be covered extend from preventing heart failure by managing risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes and hyperlipidemia to treating heart failure throughout all its stages. Key areas that will be covered include management of sleep disordered breath- ing, use of biomarkers, treatment of pulmonary artery hypertension, new uses of DOACs, HFpEF, management of atrial fibrillation, prevention of sudden death and integration of both older and newer heart failure drugs into the ther- apeutic regimen. The Symposium also covers use of percutaneous mechanical circulatory support and LVADs, heart transplantation as well as new treatment options for amyloid cardiomyopathy. There will be in-depth discussion about the rationale for and practical aspects of using new drugs for treating activation of the renin angiotensin system, slowing heart rate and managing hyperkalemia. In addition to the formal presentations, we have expanded opportunities for interactive discussions between the speakers and the audience in the program. This year, the 5th Annual Stanley Lloyd M.D. lecture will be presented by Dr. Mandeep Mehra, who will visit from Boston where he is a Professor at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Lisa Salzberg, the Executive Director of the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association and Dr. Clyde Yancy from Northwestern University will also join the faculty. By popular demand, ‘The Great Debate’ will return with Drs. Greenberg and Fonarow meeting once again to examine whether digoxin still has a role in the management of heart failure patients. SYMPOSIUM OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this program, the participant should be able to: 1. Summarize current and emerging treatments for heart failure, describe new guideline updates and provide practical information to help in the implementation of recommended therapies in individual patients. 2. Review strategies for implementing medical and device therapies that will enhance prevention and lead to improved outcomes in heart failure patients. 3. Define how specific populations including minorities, women and the elderly respond to various approaches to treating hypertension and heart failure. TARGET AUDIENCE The target audience for this activity includes cardiologists, internists, primary care physicians, nurses and allied healthcare professionals. t LoCation Course desCription, oBJeCtiVes & CMe inForMation NEEDS ASSESSMENT Heart failure (HF) is common, affecting nearly 5 million Americans. It is also one of the few cardiovascular disorders for which prevalence figures are increasing. An estimated 670,000 new cases of HF are diagnosed each year and this condition is a major cause of morbidity and mortality (80% of men and 70% of women less than 65 years of age who have HF will die within 8 years). Overall, heart failure is the number one cause of hospitalizations of the elderly in the U.S. Knowledge about HF is accumulating rapidly. To help individual clinicians synthesize new information and integrate new approaches into effective strate- gies of care for patients with this syndrome. The Symposium will provide a comprehensive overview of diagnostic approaches, current evidence-based therapies and treatment strategies as well as emerging approaches for treatment. ACCREDITATION This live activity, 25th Annual San Diego Heart Failure Symposium, with a beginning date of 06/28/2019, has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 11.5 Prescribed credit(s) by the American Academy of Family Physicians.
