F lorida is called the Sunshine State, but for logisticsproviders, it’s the water that really counts. And the

importance of the water is fully appreciated by thosecharged with keeping Florida’s waterway advantages,well, fluid.

leadership for Florida’s 14 deepwaterseaports through a collective voice inthe areas of data and research, state andfederal advocacy, and marketing andcommunications. The council holdsseveral annual meetings for the purposeof conducting business and discussingindustry trends and conditions.

Florida is the only state with seaportson two vital U.S. water shipping lanes—the Atlantic and the Gulf. In addition,Florida’s location allows for cost-efficient access to the Caribbean andSouth America.

Florida also is the country’s third-largest state, with almost 21 millionresidents. When coupled with nearly 126million visitors annually, Florida is oneof the largest consumer markets in theUnited States.

discretionary markets in neighboringstates and nearby countries has led tothe growth of imported goods cominginto Florida ports from Asia, Europe,and other countries,” Wheeler says. “Thestate’s ability to distribute goods into theFlorida market attracts shippers, shippinglines, and beneficial cargo owners.”

Many capital projects are outlinedin the council’s newly released Pathwayto Prosperity: The 2019-2023 Five-Year Florida Seaport Mission Plan.These projects will automate processes,decrease costs, add capacity for bothcargo and passengers, and expeditemovement with an emphasis on using asfew resources as possible, says Wheeler.

For example, Port Canaveral isfocusing on its $150-million CruiseTerminal 3—the largest constructionproject in the port’s history. It is alsobuilding North Cargo Berth 8 andrenovating Cruise Terminals 8 and 10.

Port Everglades just finishedupgrading Cruise Terminal 25. Itis modernizing Petroleum Slip 1,working with petroleum partners thatare developing improved offloadinginfrastructure. It continues to investin containerization, complementingthe new 43-acre Intermodal ContainerTransfer Facility with the SouthportTurning Notch Extension and Crane

Rail Infrastructure project (set tolengthen the deepwater turn-around areafor cargo ships to 2,400 feet and allowfor up to five new cargo berths and newsuper post-Panamax gantry cranes). Italso will deepen its channel to 48 feet.

The Port of Fernandina, whichsuccessfully transitioned port operationsfrom Kinder Morgan to WorldwideTerminals Fernandina in February 2018,is working on a number of up-sizingprojects to better serve large-scale vesselsand customers: a berth deepening,a 1,000-foot pier extension, and a500,000-square-foot on-dock warehouse.

The Port of Fort Pierce is movingforward on plans to rehabilitate theFisherman’s Wharf bulkhead andthe Black Pearl Boat Ramp. It plans apacking house demolition and dockapron rehabilitation, and will enhancevehicular access with improvements tothe Fisherman’s Wharf road.

JAXPORT’s 47-foot harbor deepeningis underway. The port has undertakena major facility modernization projectto enhance capacity for post-Panamaxvessels. Some of the larger projects onits five-year horizon are a Berth 33/34rehabilitation, and readying BlountIsland for a major tenant expansion.

Further improvements are set forthe Port of Palm Beach, Port of Key

West, Port Manatee, Port St. Pete, andPort Tampa Bay. As the closest portto Florida’s largest and fastest-growingmarket—the Tampa Bay/Orlando I-4Corridor—Port Tampa Bay can callits geographic location its greatestadvantage. The Central Florida regionis home to almost half of the state’spopulation, and welcomes the majorityof tourists who visit Florida every year.

CENTRAL FLORIDA JEWEL“The I-4 Corridor has the largest

concentration of distribution centersin Florida, which serve the entire statefrom this central location,” says WadeElliott, Port Tampa Bay’s vice presidentof business development. “Our closeproximity allows importers and exportersto make multiple round-trip deliveriesper day between the port and the DCs,resulting in significant container drayagecost savings.”

The biggest new development at PortTampa Bay is the addition of three newdirect Asia weekly services since thebeginning of 2019, including COSCO’sGulf of Mexico Express, CMA CGM’sPEX3, and a recently announced newservice by ZIM, MSC, and Maersk.

“Effectively, we have created analternative supply chain solution intothe heart of Florida’s largest and fastest-growing region,” says Raul Alfonso, theport’s executive vice president and chiefcommercial officer. “It’s an area that hasbeen under-served until these new Asia-Gulf services were added.”

Especially noteworthy is that thesenew services reflect a shift in trade routes,recognizing the expanding markets andcargo growth in Florida and the U.S.Gulf of Mexico region. Many of theseimporters are seeing the advantages ofrerouting and greater efficiencies, withnew and existing customers expandingtheir DC capacity in the I-4 Corridor.

Port Tampa Bay also is home toForeign Trade Zone 79, which helpscompanies involved in importing,exporting, manufacturing, anddistribution to reduce their costs andimprove their efficiency.

Port Tampa Bay welcomed a new CMA CGM service in May 2019. The PEX3 weekly service calls on Asian ports including Singapore, Hong Kong, and Shanghai.

Together with its terminal operatorpartner Ports America, Port TampaBay is aggressively building out itsinfrastructure—including the expansionof paved storage, new berths, additionalgantry cranes, and equipment, as well asnew on-dock transload facilities—to stayahead of growing demand.

Port Tampa Bay’s facilities andexperience accommodate a diversemix of cargoes, from containers andrefrigerated commodities to break-bulk, roll-on/roll-off and heavy lift(with necessary storage, laydown, cranecapacity, etc.), and immediate highwayand rail connections.

Last-mile issues are not a concern atPort Tampa Bay. “We have a dedicatedtruck ramp directly outside the gate,connecting the Port to I-4 (east/west) andI-75 (north/south),” Elliott says.

Another major infrastructureexpansion was the recent opening ofPort Logistics Refrigerated Services’ newstate-of the-art refrigerated warehouse.The Tampa Bay region is Florida’s hubfor the grocery/food and beverage sectorand is located in the heart of Florida’sagriculture industry. With on-sitededicated fumigation services, this135,000-square-foot cold storage facilityhas 6,348 racked pallet positions, 148reefer plugs, on-site USDA and CBP

inspection areas, as well as a CBP AGSpecialists lab.

In the port’s 2018 State of the Portreport, Port of Tampa Bay President andCEO Paul Anderson summarizes theport’s progress: “Not only did Port TampaBay experience its second consecutiverecord revenue year, but we began tosee a convergence of several initiativesincluding major infrastructure projects,real estate agreements, and new cargoes.

“In fiscal year 2018, our recordoperating revenue of more than $59million represented a double-digitincrease of 11% and was attributed to allprimary revenue streams including cargocategories as well as growth in industrialmaritime real estate development andour cruise business which, for thefirst time in our history, surpassed onemillion passengers.”

In its 2019 report, the port will haveeven more to cheer as the Big BendChannel Improvement project wascompleted earlier this year. The project,more than a dozen years in the making,effectively brought together five public-private partnership entities (U.S. ArmyCorps of Engineers, Florida Departmentof Transportation, Tampa Electric,Mosaic, and Port Tampa Bay) to deepenand widen the channel at Port Redwingfor larger ships.

“These larger ships will bring morecargo capacity that ultimately translatesinto jobs, economic impact, andgenerational impact for years to come,”Anderson says.

FACILITATING E-COMMERCEYet another illustration of Florida’s

ahead-of-the-curve logistics advantagesis its responsiveness to the growingimportance of e-commerce.

E-commerce is no longer a trend buta well-established distribution channel.In order for brands to earn clientloyalty, they need to fulfill orders fromtheir omnichannels in the timeframeexpected. Ameriworld Fulfillment, aMiami-based logistics company thatspecializes in drop-ship and e-commerce,understands the industry requirementsand is able to handle a high daily volumeof orders.

Ameriworld has been in the productdistribution business, also knownas fulfillment, since its inception in2003, affording the company much-needed expertise in the ever-evolvinge-commerce world. Alongside its online and digitalservices, Ameriworld still offers itsoriginal “full package” service throughwhich it provides companies office spaceand back-office services (accounting,order management, payroll, etc.).
