This tea farm to the north of Fuji City is considered a great location from which to take photographs – the rolling tea fields and snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji make for a great combination and spectacular views when the weather is clear. Facing the Suruga bay sits Ryuō Shrine. Although the correct name is Ryu Shrine, it is usually called Ryuō Shrine since eight dragon kings are enshrined here. Due to their association with the sea, they are respected by local fishermen as a symbol of safety and luck. Built to worship the Buddhist deity, Bishamonten, the god of warfare, the Bishamonten Myōhōji Temple is located to the east of Yoshiwara. The Bishamonten Festival is held from the 7th-9th of the old Lunar New Year calendar, where one of the biggest daruma markets can be witnessed in Japan. Kanbara-juku was the fifteenth of 53 stations along the Tōkaidō, one of the main Edo period routes connecting Kyoto and Tokyo. Therefore, there is a lot of history on display in the Kanbara area, includ- ing the original waypoint marking the Higashi Kido, or Eastern Wooden Gate. Tagonoura Port is well-known in Fuji city for its shirasu, or fresh young whitebait/sardines. They are caught from Suruga Bay off the coast of Shizuoka, which is the leading source of shirasu for the whole of Japan. At the Fisheries Cooperative Restaurant at Tagonoura Port, you can enjoy eating shirasu daily (10:30-13:30) between April and November. Located by the coast with beautiful views of Mount Fuji, Tagonoura Port Park provides 7.3 hectares of open space to relax, including a playground for children. Visitors can enjoy spectacular views of both the sea and Mount Fuji itself – head to the summit of ‘Mini Fuji-san’ to get the best vantage point over the surrounding area, including night views of Fuji’s industrial areas. For visitors to Fuji city who wish to rent bicycles (from Shin-Fuji Station), this route makes for a nice ride along the coast and connects Tagonoura Port Park with Ryuo Shrine and Nyudo Himon Park to the west. Cycling Information: Rental bicyles are available from Shin-Fuji Station – why not rent a bicycle for the day and explore around Shin-Fuji and Tagonoura at your own pace!

Therefore, there is a lot of history on display in the Kanbara area, includ-ing the original waypoint marking the Higashi Kido, or Eastern Wooden Gate.

Tagonoura Port is well-known in Fuji city for its shirasu, or fresh young whitebait/sardines. They are caught from Suruga Bay off the coast of Shizuoka, which is the leading source of shirasu for the whole of Japan. IZUMIYA

OLD IGARASHI DENTAL CLINIC

Originally a ryokan, the 180-year old Izumiya is now a combination of cafe, local goods & crafts shop, and workshop where locals can practice traditional weaving techniques and more. It makes for an ideal rest stop for those coming to see this stretch of the Tokaido road and historical spots in the area. Izumiya is registered as a cultural property of Japan.

The former Igarashi Dental Clinic is a beautiful, historic structure which, along with its garden, is open to the public as a museum for free to all visitors. Sections of the home were originally built in the Meiji era. In 1914, the dentist Igarashi reformed the original building into his dental clinic, hence the Western exterior yet Japanese interior. It is a registered cultural property of Japan.
