Bring in the May
No wonder the tree featuresso strongly in ancient folklore. The old name for hawthorn was“may” and the flower of the maytree has long been considereda symbol of hope. It even gaveits name to The Mayflower, thefamous ship that sailed fromEngland in 1620, transporting astalwart band of pilgrims to builda new life in America. As its alternative namesuggests, hawthorn wascentral to ancient May Daycelebrations. The old Celtic festival of MayDay was known as ‘Beltane’after the Celtic god of light,or the sun. The beginning ofsummer was also celebratedin Ancient Rome at the Floraliafestival (dedicated to the flowergoddess Flora), which tookplace at roughly the sametime. May Day celebrations inBritain were probably a hybridof both traditions mixed upwith Druidic tree worship, andthe introduction of Christianitydid little to dispel these pagantraditions. On the first day of May, villagerswould wake at daybreak androam through the countryside,
gathering flowers and hawthorntwigs to decorate their houses.Amaypole – usually the trunkof a birch tree, stripped of itsbranches and decorated withribbons and flowers - was setup in the middle of the villagegreen. In olden times maypoles wereconstructed with three ringson the top - the highest andsmallest was made of hawthorn. The community danced aroundthe pole, singing traditionalsongs, while the men of thevillage performed Morris dancesand the prettiest girl, dressedin floral garlands, was crownedQueen of the May. Occasionallya May King was also chosen, and the pair ruled over thefestivities. In Elizabethan times, the king and queen were giventhe names ‘Robin Hood’ and‘Maid Marian’.These celebrations werederived from ancient fertilityrituals and the ‘greenwoodmarriages’ that took placeprovide clear evidence of this.Often young girls came homefrom their country rambles withmore than a garland of flowers. As one observer wrote: “I
have hearde of tenne maidenswhiche went to set May, andnine of them came home withchilde.”May Day festivities reachedtheir height in England duringthe Middle Ages but in 1644 thePuritans passed a law whichmade them illegal. This attemptto repress the celebrationseventually failed, mainlybecause they were too deeplyrooted in rural culture. When themonarchy was restored someyears later and Charles II cameto the throne, people all over thecountry put up maypoles as asign of loyalty to the crown. For the next two hundred yearsthe old customs continued, butinterest in May Day traditionsbegan to fade. They enjoyeda brief revival in the Victorianera but any connection tofertility rites was deliberatelyoverlooked and maypoledancing was reduced to aninnocent children’s game.Sadly by this time the hawthorn– once the embodiment ofhope for the coming summer– had also lost its significance, becoming just another tree inthe British landscape.
By Kate McLelland
One of the best indications that summer isabout to arrive is when Britain’s hedgerowsexplode with the pink and white blossoms ofthe hawthorn.
The hawthorn is one of those quintessentiallyEnglish trees: although quietly unobtrusivefor most of the year, it bursts into spectacularlife in the late spring, with flowers crowded sodensely together they look like snowfall. In theautumn it glows with clusters of red berries.

However much effort youmake with your garden, you can be sure that therewill still be a few thingsthat look awful. You mayhave made (or hope tomake) beautiful borders, sensational shrubbery andlots more besides, but howdo you cope with thosethings you just cannotseem to hide?A washing line: It maybe essential but it rarelyadds to the appeal ofthe garden. If yours islike mine and consistsof two large poles witha line between them, trygrowing a pretty climberup the poles. If you usea self clinging plant suchas variegated ivy it will doits own thing without anyform of additional support.Alternatively make achicken wire, trellis ‘box’or frame around the postsand then allow the climberto scramble up, usingplant ties if necessary too.
Summer flowering clematiswill look great or you couldmake a seasonal displayfor summer only usingpretty climbers such assweet peas. If you do useone of the more vigorousclimbers then be preparedto do some intermittentpruning to ensure that itdoes not use your washingline as a plant support.A decrepit shed or moth-eaten garage: Gardenbuildings may be usefulbut all too often theyare also a real eyesore.Sometimes a thoroughscrub of the walls willdo the trick, or why notmake a feature out ofthe shed or garage andre-paint it – perhaps usinga masonry paint or woodpaint that tones in withexisting garden structures, the colour of your windowframes or perhaps simplya colour that tickles yourfancy. Consider erectinga trellis on one or more
of the vertical surfacesand grow a selection offavourite climbers up itto make an even moreattractive feature. If thegarden is inclined to be alittle gloomy then it helpsif you paint any surfacessuch as garage or shedwalls with a paler colour– it is amazing just howmuch light this will bounceback into your garden.Heating fuelled by gasfrom a huge cylinder or oilfrom a large green tank:I’m the owner of one ofthe mammoth green metaltanks and as much as Ienjoy a well-heated houseI detest the tank andbecause it has to be sitedin an accessible positionso it can be re-filled withrelative ease; you cannotlose it in the depths of thegarden. I use hazel wattlehurdles to hide ours, whichare perfect as they alsomatch with the adjacentboundary fence. You could

use standard fence panelsin the same way andagain planting them withclimbers or scramblers willhelp. Whatever you do,make sure that you checkon it from time to time andremove excessive climbergrowth so that the tankremains accessible. Is it the neighbouringgarden that harbours theeye sore which makes youwant to retreat back intoyour house? Somethingnasty next door is ofcourse even harder toconceal but why not adda layer of trellis to the topof your existing fence andthen use climbers onceit is in position. Hold thetrellis in position using
batons of wood attachedto the existing fence postsor special post-joiningmetal sleeves that youcan buy from your fencingsupplier or garden centre.Trellis is available in arange of shapes and neednot be straight edged soyou can create a range ofdifferent looks to suit yourgardening style. Anotheroption is to erect a pergolaor arch to obscure or breakup an unsightly view or theeyesore in their gardenand adding plants will helpto add a bit more heightand soften the outline. If you combine some ofyour favourite floweringclimbers with someevergreen planting too,
you should even achievegood effects during theseasons when the leaveshave fallen from manyplants.

TallinnOld Town
Long ago on Toompea Hill, the noble families of Tallinnenjoyed fresh air and stunningviews while at their feet, artisans and traders earnedtheir living in dark mysteriouslanes. Nowadays, in Estonia’scapital, the hill top welcomeseveryone with its lovelyesplanades looking down onred gabled roofs, cobbledalleyways, lofty spires andthe remains of the city wall. The Baltic Sea glistens in thedistance and the chiming ofbells mingles with bird song.Up there, two cathedralsbeckon, the old Lutheranchurch with tombs and coats ofarms and the modern RussianOrthodox with golden mosaicsand onion-shaped domes. Girlsin Estonian dress sell roastedalmonds on a quiet square andthe Old Town, now a WorldHeritage site, tumbles downthe picturesque streets, knownas ‘Tallinn’s two legs’. In thehumble Danish King’s Garden, they say, Valdemar II restedon his way to Toompea andinspired by a vision of whatwould become the Danish flag,he led his troops to victory. All around, flowering plantsand medieval Guild signsline the meandering stepsand alleyways where smallart galleries and craft shops
mingle with outdoor cafés andsecluded courtyards. Look outfor St Nicholas church, famousfor its silver and dancingskeletons and St Olav’s which, when it was built in 1500,claimed the world’s tallestspire. The House of the BlackHeads Brotherhood was foryoung unmarried merchants, protected by an African saint, and the ‘Fat Margaret’ tower, named after a cook, is now theMaritime Museum. Now and then, you catch aglimpse of the limestone citywall, dating back to the 13thcentury, over a mile longaltogether and dotted withfairy tale towers, includingthe ivy-draped Viru Gate, thecity’s icon, and the strangely-named ‘Maidens’ Tower’ whereprostitutes were sent to jail. StCatherine’s Passage and theMasters’ Courtyard are awashwith ceramics, quilts andhand-painted silk, sheer delightfor photographers, but gemsawait on every corner, herea Dominican Priory, there aflour mill, a Great Guildhall andon the Town Hall Square, theoldest pharmacy in Europe. This colourful square hasbeen the heart of town for 800years. The Gothic Town Hallis a 15th century masterpiece, some say the best of its kind
in Northern Europe, withdragons spouting water fromthe façade and Old Thomas, the local mascot, perched atopthe tower. Pink, red, white orcream, tall merchant housesrise all around, bearing witnessto the wealth of the HanseaticLeague, a medieval guild whichtraded from the Baltic to theNorth Sea. Visitors gaze at thecompass rose on the roundstone and the great cauldronsof elk soup bubbling underthe arcades where traditionalrestaurants beckon with fur-covered chairs. Some seek outthe Bishops’ House festoonedin apostles’ niches, othersmake their way to the City’sMuseum and its scale model ofTallinn but sooner or later, thebakeries beckon with temptingdisplays of hand-madechocolates and marzipan, invented right here, in the oldpharmacy.According to legend, thepharmacist was ill and theastute apprentice, who hadto test all remedies, replacedthe bitter herbs with sweetingredients. Everyone lovedit, especially the patients. Soin Old Tallinn today, you’ll findmarzipan in all shapes andcolours and you can even trymaking your own in a localworkshop.

Our little town is full of things to do: a
cinema, many small shops, a leisure
centre... But has it got everything? The other day I was on the
Macclesfield Rugby Club website
searching for the girls’ team. After
many hours of researching and phone
calls, I found that they had closed
down the girls’ team about eighteen
months ago! The closest girls’ club to
Macclesfield is Manchester Rugby
Club in Cheadle Hulme, a good twenty
minute car journey.
I have no trouble getting down to
Cheadle Hulme but many people do,
especially when it is dark in the winter
– when rugby season is. It isn’t fair on
our parents to have to give us lifts all
of the time.
Sport is popular in Macclesfield with
the Football Club, Cricket Club, and
Rugby Club, but sadly the latter lacks a
club for females. So why are we
lacking in girls willing to participate
in a sport which keeps you healthy,
social and is a great laugh? Rugby is a
sport where everyone can find a place
and where you can make friends for
life.
Traditionally, rugby is more of a man’s
sport but more and more girls are
playing it and showing an interest.
Arguably if girls are willing to give a
couple of hours a week to attend
training and matches then
Macclesfield RUFC will be able to form
a girls’ team and girls won’t have to
venture out to other places to do
something that, if they had a few
more people, could be played in their
home town.
As well as it being better for girls who
want to play rugby, it also could help
with the publicity of Macclesfield and
its rugby club in general. Having a
girls’ rugby team would also increase
the profile of Macclesfield and we
could publicise it and recruit people
from towns around Macclesfield like
Congleton and Bollington.
Another benefit of a local club is that
it encourages young people to get
involved. Travelling to a distant club
is not the only drawback as young
people do not want to join a club and
not know anyone. It’s a lot harder to
join a new club when you don’t know
anyone there. If there was still a club
in Macclesfield, more local girls would
feel comfortable to get take part.
Being a member of Cheadle Hulme
Rugby Club also means that matches
are further afield as Cheadle Hulme is
closer to Manchester than
Macclesfield. I’ve had matches as
close as Eccles and as far away as
Lancaster, which can be a draw back
when trying to organise travel
arrangements. If we were able to get a

From the playground to the workplace, we all knowwe’re not going to get by without a little help fromour friends. But how do we go about forging thosefriendships in the first place? We’ve put together a collectionof stories where a friendship iscentral. And it just goes to show, bonds can be formed in the mostunlikely of places.
Of Mice and MenJohn SteinbeckGeorge Milton and LennieSmall are two migrant workerswho dream of owning their ownfarm. George is intelligent butuneducated and Lennie is agreat hulk of a man; physicallystrong but mentally weak. Setduring the Great Depression, the pair is forced out of theaptly-named ‘Weed’, Californiaafter Lennie’s fondness fortouching ‘soft things’ lands himin trouble. Chasing the elusiveAmerican Dream, George mustdecide what kind of a futuretheir friendship can have.
The Boy in the StripedPyjamasJohn BoyneBruno is the son of an SSofficer and is also a natural-born explorer, so it’s nosurprise that when his familymoves to ‘Out With’, he hasa lot of questions about thechildren who appear behind thebarbed wire fence wearing bluestriped pyjamas. Bruno meetsShmuel, who lives the otherside, has a shaved head and isconstantly hungry and the twoform a friendship that will havedevastating consequences.Boyne’s children’s book aboutconcentration camps is a must-read for all adults. It will stay
with you for days, weeks andmonths afterwards, just as itshould.WonderR.J. PalacioStarting high school is toughenough for any kid, but whenyou have a facial deformityand it’s your first time steppinginto the torrential current ofmainstream education, you’rebound to be washed away.August Pullman is startingin the Fifth Grade and hasthe rather unenviable task ofhelping his classmates seebeyond his disfigurement. There are tears and laughterin equal measures as ‘Auggie’tries to make the right friendsand find his place in theunforgiving environment ofBeecher Prep. The HelpKathryn StockettThis is the story of threewomen: Skeeter, Aibileen andMinny, and their attempts tochange the social structureand confines of a segregatedMississippi in the 1960s. YoungSkeeter is a white woman witha degree, but no husband.Aibileen is a black maid whois essentially raising a whitewoman’s child for her, whilstgrieving for her own dead son.Meanwhile Minny is a fantastic
cook but an even greatergossip. Between them, thethree plan to write and publishtheir own stories, revealingsocial scandals and ‘tellin’ itlike it is’.Starter for TenDavid NichollsIt must be every teenageboy’s dream to appear on‘University Challenge’ mustn’tit? For anyone who ever feltthe odd one out, this bookis testament to the fact thatwithin institutes of highereducation, everyone can findkindred spirits. Working-classstudent Brian Jackson is off touniversity on a full scholarshipand he’s determined to flex hisintellectual muscles by winninga place on the UC team. The Joy Luck ClubAmy TanBefore Carrie Bradshaw et al,four Chinese women beganmeeting in San Franciscoto compare notes as recentimmigrants. It was 1949 andthey called themselves ‘TheJoy Luck Club’. It’s a complexand delicately interwoventale of Chinese mothers anddaughters, revealing secretsand lies and all striving to finda place in the modern worldwhilst feeling the constant tugof their past.

These days, we’re doing moreand more things digitally: ourholiday snaps sit on hard disks, our music is often in MP3 andwe’re as likely to download filmsas buy them on disc. That’sgreat when your PC’s workingperfectly, but how do you makesure it stays that way?Protecting your PC falls intothree key categories: protectingyour valuable data, protectingyour PC from online threatsand protecting your PC fromphysical damage.Protecting the hardware isthe easy bit. Surge protectorscan prevent nasty spikes inthe electricity supply fromcausing any damage, and ifyou have a laptop you can buya Kensington Lock to secureit to something suitably hefty.A compressed air canister canblow dust out of fan vents anddebris out of keyboards, andit’s a good idea to keep yourPC away from extremes oftemperature - a sunny roomin summer is a terrible placeto keep a PC. Be particularlyaware of potential spills: liquidcan destroy computers andyou won’t believe the damagea tin of baby food can do to akeyboard. It’s a very good ideato keep food and drink and PCsseparate. No matter how careful you are, computers can and do break:
every hard disk will wear outeventually. That’s why it’s reallyimportant to keep backup copiesof anything important suchas family photographs, homevideos or iTunes downloads. You can do this in several ways- using an online service suchas Mozy (www.mozy.co.uk) orSkydrive (skydrive.live.com),by burning them to DVD or bycopying them to an externalhard disk, but remember thatif your backup is in the sameplace as the original, a domesticdisaster such as a burst pipemight ruin both of them. It’s worth remembering too thatservices such as Facebookwon’t compensate you if theyaccidentally delete or damageyour online photo libraries;once again make sure that if it’simportant, you have more thanone copy in case of disaster. The other issue to worry aboutis “malware”, which is softwaredesigned to do nasty things.Sometimes malware spieson you, trying to obtain yourpasswords and other details;other times it just damages filesor slows your PC to a crawl. Thegood news is that it’s relativelyeasy to avoid: Windows 7 andWindows 8 both have firewallsoftware, which can preventnasties getting in, and if you’resuspicious you can avoid mostmalware. Don’t open unsolicited
email attachments from peopleyou don’t know, and don’t letfake emails from the bankfool you: your bank will neversend you programs or zippeddocuments in an email.Always make sure you’redownloading from reputablesources, such as Microsoft.com,not Big Dave’s Totally HonestDownload Page and make sureyour web browser software is upto date. Old browsers are a realsecurity risk.Last but not least, invest insome security software. Youdon’t need to spend any money- Microsoft’s Security Essentialsis free (www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/), as is AVGFree anti-virus (free.avg.com)and AVAST (www.avast.com),and there are also free tools totune up your PC. One of ourfavourites is CCleaner (www.piriform.com/ccleaner), whichworks miracles on sluggishPCs, and we’d also recommendthe free Ad-Aware program(www.lavasoft.com) to preventannoying software setting upshop on your PC.Keeping your PC safe isn’tdifficult, time-consuming orexpensive, but it’s worth doing.Think of PC protection likehome insurance: you hope you’llnever need it, but if disasterstrikes you’ll be glad you haveit.

FinanceIgnorance is NoDefence
In my parents’ day, moneywas a simpler matter. In manyfamilies they went to work, earned their money, paid theirtaxes and saved what theycould. When it came time tobuy a house, they approachedthe bank manager to see if hewould be kind enough to lendthem three times the husband’ssalary (the wife stayed at homelooking after the children) fora repayment mortgage whichwas paid off over 20 or 25 yearsbefore he got his final salaryscheme pension.By the time I started earningmoney, it had become muchmore complicated. We weretwo people paying the mortgageneeding much higher salarymultiples to afford rising houseprices. Then came the endingof MIRAS, the emergence ofinterest only mortgages andendowment policies to pay themoff (or not as it turned out insome cases). Pensions becamemore complex too, with choicesfor opting out of SERPS,private pension schemes, money purchase schemes andfinal salary scheme pensionsbecame a distant memory formost.Throw in the scandals of mis-selling of endowments and PPIto name just two, and it’s cleareven for my generation thefinancial world has become aconfusing place. Hedge funds,
derivatives, swaps – even theso-called experts struggle tomake sense of it.The common thing throughoutall these generations, myparents, myself, our children,is that none of us have everhad any financial education. Not one single lesson in theclassroom at my school wasever devoted to personalfinancial matters. The financialcompany employees are taughthow to sell to us, but we havelittle idea of how to make ajudgement on what they tell us.At last, this should be about tochange. In 2011, 118,000 peoplesigned an e-petition via theMoneySavingExpert.comwebsite to force the issue ofFinancial Education in Schoolsto be debated in Parliament.Draft proposals have beenpublished recently and are stillunder consultation into April, but it is expected that fromSeptember 2014, financialeducation will form part of thenational curriculum in England, with 11-16 year olds receivingit as part of their compulsorycitizenship education.Plans are that pupils in KeyStage 3 (ages 11 to 14) will betaught the function and use ofmoney, personal budgeting, money management and arange of financial products and
services. From 14 to 16 in Key Stage 4,they will be taught about wages, taxes, debt, credit, financial riskplus more sophisticated financialservices and products. The Government wants studentsto have “the financial skills toenable them to manage theirmoney on a day-to-day basisas well as to plan for futurefinancial needs.”It is clear that the lessons arelong overdue. You only have tolook at how much the financialworld has changed in the last 40years to see that what is needed(and will hopefully be taught inschools) is a good groundingin the ‘basics’ of understandingpersonal finance. It is to behoped that the generation thatreceive this education realisethat their learning will need tocontinue long after they leavethe classroom as the financialworld continues to evolve. If knowledge is power, havingthe right financial knowledgewill help our children avoid themistakes with money we mayhave made along the way, andthat can only be a good thing. In the meantime, pass on whatyou know already Mums andDads, and a free Teen CashClass is available at http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/family/Teenagers-cash-class.

Why not give your garden a treat and fill those gaps
in the beds and borders with some new, unusual and
beautiful plants from some of the countries most
respected specialist nurseries? Plant Hunters’ Fairs
are the place to find something really special for your
garden. And if you need help choosing, the nursery-
men and women are on hand to offer free, expert
advice. The fairs feature many RHS medal winning
growers as well as small specialist growers.
At our event at Adlington, you can enjoy the plant fair
and explore the magnificent gardens and parkland, or
simply relax, take in the beautiful gardens and enjoy
traditional teas and homemade cakes. With so much
to see, why not take one of the free guided tours of
the gardens with the Head Gardener Anthony

suitably mark its Bicentenary year.suitably mark its Bicentenary year.suitably mark its Bicentenary year.suitably mark its Bicentenary year.
To have reached this milestone represents a major
achievement in itself. Described by Cheshire histo-
rian Alan Crosby as ‘Perhaps the finest Sunday
school in England’, the building endured gradual
decline in the years after World War II, and deterio-
rated rapidly following the closure of the Sunday
School in 1973. Fortunately, the granting of listed
status recognised its architectural and historic
value, and during the 1980’s fund-raising efforts led
by the Friends of Macclesfield Silk Heritage and The
Macclesfield Sunday School Heritage Trust ensured
its survival, restoration and refurbishment,
culminating in its designation as the Heritage
Centre in Macclesfield.
Together with the Silk Museum and The Paradise
Mill on Park Lane, and West Park Museum, the
Heritage Centre is now administered and managed
by the Silk Heritage Trust. Through the
maintenance and development of these Museums
and their diverse collections, the Trust’s aim is to
enhance awareness and interest in Macclesfield’s
fascinating past among both local people and
visitors alike.
In fact, recent funding efforts to save the Heritage
Centre building mirror the original determination
of local people to bring it into being. In 1812, the
Macclesfield Sunday School management
committee resolved that ‘a building capable of
containing all the children now under instruction
and providing for a moderate increase, be erected in
some central situation of the town’. A committee of
Friends was set up in February 1813 to oversee the
project. The site on Roe Street was chosen and
construction began just twomonths later.
A year later, on 10th April 1814, the Sunday School
opened its doors to almost 2,500 boys and girls. Its
completion was a magnificent civic effort. Records
show that the building cost £5,639 – a huge sum at
the time. Most of the funds came through voluntary
subscription from both rich and poor, with £1,000
raised by the teachers and pupils themselves.
The history of the Sunday School building will fea-
ture in a special exhibition to be held at the Heritage
Centre later this year as part of the Bicententary
commemoration. A series of lectures, concerts,
special events and displays are also being planned.
