Laurens Fire Department to Receive Donation from Upcoming PerformanceBy: Chris Vrba

There’s an old adage that goes “No good deed goes unpunished.” Last week, the saying would certainly fi t one Busiest Little Town businessman to a “T.” In recent days, the Silver Dollar Saloon rolled out its promotion for the slate of shows the downtown dining and drinking establishment plans to host during Laurens’ upcoming Fall Fest celebration. Posters, newspaper and radio ads list sponsors who have helped support Silver Dollar Saloon’s attempt to bring in big-name entertainment for what promises to be one of the busiest little autumn weekends the community has ever seen. In fact, on Saturday night, Fall Fest organizers expect the town to more than double as about 2,500 people will fl ood downtown to watch headlining band Judd Hoos. Shortly after the promotional materials were released, Silver Dollar Saloon’s manager Nathan Brazel’s phone began ringing off the hook. Brazel said he heard from numerous concerned residents who were upset that the Laurens Fire Department was listed as one of the event sponsors. “They said they weren’t going to support the fi re department, or make any more donations to them if the fi re department was just going to give money to the bars,” Brazel quickly relayed. “The fi re department is going to be volunteering to help with security,” Nathan quickly clarifi ed. He continued by saying that he listed Laurens Fire Department as a way to publicly recognize them for helping support the event. Brazel was also clear and concise, saying the Laurens Fire Department has not contributed a single penny to bring in bands for Fall Fest. “They’re outstanding members of our community, and I want to recognize them for volunteering their time,” he added. But, Brazel’s appreciation for the Laurens Fire Department and its members who volunteer their time to help protect their friends and neighbors runs deeper than merely listing their name; he’s doing one better. Silver Dollar Saloon will donate $500 or three percent of the concert gate, whichever’s higher, to the Laurens Fire Department after Fall Fest winds down. “It’s our way of saying thank you,” Brazel concluded. This isn’t a quick scramble by the Silver Dollar Saloon manager to save face. Back in July when he fi rst pitched the Laurens City Council on his plans for large street dances during Fall Fest weekend, he told city elders of his plan to donate some of the proceeds to LFD. For decades, organizations in The Busiest Little Town have thrived because of the benefi cence of civic-minded businessmen and women, and Brazel’s contribution is just the latest example of what has kept the quality of life in rural communities the ideal that the rest of the country strives to achieve. So, if you weren’t already excited about Fall Fest’s tantalizing lineup of parades, bands, games, and delicious BBQ, your attendance will help a great cause - the Laurens Fire Department. Be sure to be in the Busiest Little Town Friday, October 4 and Saturday, October 5 to join in on what promises to be a festive, and fantastic, weekend. And don’t forget to stop out Sunday, October 6, from 8 a.m. to noon for the Laurens Fire Department’s annual pancake feed fundraiser.

Recycling Bins AvaliableLaurens Hometown Pride received a Community Beautifi cation Grant through Keep Iowa Beautiful. This grant allowed us to purchase 4 additional planters for downtown, 2 trash receptacles, and 300 recycle bins to promote recycling in the City. The bins are limited to one per family and can be picked up at City Hall.

PLASTICS: Check the bottom of plastic items for the recycling code, either a 1, 2, or 3 inside the recycling symbol can be recycled. These plastics include such items as milk jugs, shampoo, detergent and pop bottles. RINSE, DRAIN, AND DISCARD CAPS.2. GLASS: Food containers only. They should be rinsed clean; labels are okay, discard the lids.3. TIN: Food containers only. They should be rinsed clean and fl attened, labels are okay.4. CARDBOARD: Clean, non-waxed, corrugated cardboard and also the type used in pop cartons, cereal cartons, and Kleenex boxes.5. NEWSPAPER: Anything received in the newspaper is recyclable as well as all paper not considered white paper. Newspaper may be placed in brown paper bags or tied in bundles.7. SLICK/SHINY MAGAZINES: Slick/Shiny magazines are now accepted. NO CATALOGS ORADVERTISING INSERTS at this time.DO NOT RECYCLE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS:1. Waxed milk cartons, egg cartons or Styrofoam;2. Bleach bottles, anti-freeze, or oil containers;3. Plastic bags - plastic grocery bags and bread bags are not currently recyclable;4. Window glass, light bulbs, or ceramics.

Recycling FactsLAST YEARDuring 2012, there were 3,651 recycling stops made in the City of Laurens totaling 80,480 lbs of recycled materials. This means that on the average, 152 homes are recycling at an average of slightly over 22 lbs per home per stop. In 2012 if all 576 residential properties in Laurens recycled, this would have been a savings of 304,726 lbs of trash taken to the landfi ll. We currently pay $0.465 per pound for our trash to be taken at the landfi ll. This extra trash cost the city and tax payers an additional $14,169.77 in charges to the Pocahontas County Landfi ll, or broken down by family - $24.60 in landfi ll charges per year/$2.05 per month on their utility bill. In 2012, the City of Laurens took 1,336,440 Ibs of trash to the landfi ll. If everyone recycled, this would have cut our landfi ll "donation" by 22%!CURRENTSo far in 2013, there have been 2,318 stops for recycling averaging 145 households in the City are recycling. The total weight of recycled materials so far this year is 72,940 Ibs. Each household participating in the recycling program is averaging 31.5 Ibs of recycling twice monthly. Currently if all 576 residential properties in Laurens recycled, this would be a savings of 434,997 lbs of trash kept out of the landfi ll. At the $0.465 price per pound for trash, this would be an additional savings of $20,227.35 for landfi ll fees. This broken down by residential property is $35.12 per year or approximately $2.92 on their utility bill each month! So far this year, the City has taken 791,360 lbs of trash to the landfi ll. If everyone recycled, we could have reduced our "donation" to the landfi ll by 36.6% so far this year! That is quite a savings! In a time when utility rates seem to increase every year, this is one way for a family to save some money on their utility bill and help our environment. I would like to encourage every resident in the city of Laurens to recycle and save! The city will not benefi t from you recycling, each and every resident in the city will benefi t!

L-M 3rd Graders Special Science Day!By: Kacie Cox

On the 6th of September Mrs. Boettcher’s 3rd grade at Laurens-Marathon had quite an exciting day because the high-school physical science class came and presented experiments to teach them the scientifi c method! Just as a refresher, the scientifi c method is the steps you take when you’re conducting an experiment. The steps are asking a question, doing research, forming a hypothesis, testing your hypothesis with an experiment and procedure, analyzing your data, and drawing your conclusion. The Physical Science class had most students saying their day was awesome, or super cool. Haylie said, “It was really fun and Jaydon started smiling and giggling when he went up front! I like the volcano in a cup, I tried it at home but I didn’t have red food coloring so it didn’t work!” I’m glad that we left the 3rd graders bursting with excitement wanting to try these experiments at home! Before we showed what we knew about the scientifi c method, the 3rd graders preformed a rap for us. They all stood up and sang along. We started our presentations off with the Science Guys, Caleb P., Noah A., and Ricky U. Their experiment showed us the different variables. They had three test

tubes, one held Diet Coke, one held vegetable oil, and the last one vinegar. Their variable being different liquids in each container. They then asked the 3rd graders which they thought would react. Most of them voted for the Diet Coke, the Science Guys tested it, and nothing happened. A few kids voted for the vegetable oil, they put the baking soda in it, and again nothing happened. Only one 3rd grader voted for the vinegar, and they were right. When the Science Guys put the baking soda in the vinegar it started foaming, and bubbling up right over the top of the tube. “When the boys made the thing come up out of the tube, it was awesome!” Taylor told me. Next to present was the Science Alliance, Kenzie S., Hannah R., and Alexiz (Lexi) S. They did an awesome job coming up with a show to entertain and teach the 3rd graders. The Science Alliance’s question they were trying to answer was could they stop the bad guys with a foamy fountain! They had one large tube which contained hydrogen peroxide, and dish soap. In a separate container they mixed yeast and water together, then poured it into the tube, and slowly it started foaming up. Haylie said, “I liked when it started rising up, up and up and then it leaked out!” To close the presentations off we had the Magma Makers

Cody R., Jason W., Anthony G., and Kacie C.. Their experiment was the same as the Science Alliance except instead of stopping bad guys, they made a volcano with fl owing lava. Instead of having the hydrogen peroxide and dish soap in a large tube, they had it in a small gatorade bottle for bigger effect. To give the foam a lava like effect, a lot of red dye was added. This group had one of the 3rd graders be their special helper. Jaydon came up and poured the yeast in for the Magma Makers! It started fl owing over, and it just kept going! Jaydon said, “It was fun and cool. My favorite part was going up there and pouring the stuff in.” Courtney told me, “I liked all three experiments, they were cool and awesome!” A big thanks goes to Mrs. Boettcher, and her 3rd grade class for being such a good audience, and for their special performance they welcomed us with! A special thanks goes to the Haylie, Jaydon, Taylor and Courtney for telling me their thoughts on this special science day!

Century And Heritage Farms Recognized During Iowa State FairIowa Department of Agriculture and Farm Bureau celebrated families that have owned a farm for 100 years or 150 years

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey recognized Century and Heritage Farm families during a ceremony at the State Fair again this year. To qualify, a family must have owned at least 40 acres for 100 years or more in the case of Century Farms and 150 years or more for a Heritage Farm. This year 365 Century Farms and 67 Heritage Farms were recognized. “It is a great pleasure and distinct honor to help recognize these farm families that have owned the same farm for 100 or 150 years. It is a testament to the values of land stewardship, hard work, patience, dedication and perseverance that are found in Iowa’s farm families,” Northey said. The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship has partnered with the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation since 1976 to recognize families that have owned and worked a farm for 100 years or more. Including this year’s

recipients, now 17,851 farms from across the state have been recognized. The Heritage Farm program was started in 2006, on the 30th anniversary of the Century Farm program, and now 650 farms have been recognized. The 2013 Century and Heritage Farms Program ceremony was held at the Iowa State Fair on Tuesday, August 13. Craig Hill, President of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation, or Joe Heinrich, Vice President of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation, joined Northey in recognizing the award recipients. “The program acknowledges the deep roots of Iowa agriculture and

the special bond that exists between Iowa families and the land they farm,” Northey said. “The Iowa State Fair is a celebration of Iowa and Iowa Agriculture, so it’s a great place to recognize the Century Farm and Heritage Farm recipients.” Among the Century Farm recipents was the Lund Family Farm of Laurens, IA. The family is pictured below receiving their award.

GTRA Takes Down L-M Friday, September 13, in their week three contest of the 2013 football season, the LM Chargers traveled to Ruthven to take on the Graettinger-Terril-Ruthven-Ayshire Titans. The contest left the Chargers on the losing end of an 18-54 score. In a contest that was controlled in all aspects by the Titans, the Chargers scored three times. Senior Levi Bechtel played a large role in 2 of the 3 scores. Early in the fi rst quarter, lining up in the slotback position, Levi completed a 40 yd. pass to Keegan Jamison to put the Chargers inside of the fi ve yard line. The completion led to a 1 yard touchdown run by Chase Oehlertz, giving the Chargers their fi rst point of the night. Later Levi was on the receiving end of an11 yd touchdown reception from Chase Oehlertz to narrow the score to 12-14 at the end of the 1st qtr. The fi nal three periods found the Titans scoring 40 points, with only one Charger score during those three periods. Half way through the 4th quarter, Tre Seiler punched it in from 1 yard out to give the Chargers their 3rd and fi nal touchdown. Final score—GTRA 54—LM Chargers 18.

Considering a Cover CropFarmers - have you considered putting a cover crop on your fi elds? Cover crops help reduce soil erosion, they uptake and hold Nitrogen for next season’s crop, they help with weed suppression and help increase soil Organic matter. It’s good for the soil and helps improve water quality from here to the Gulf of Mexico. Now is the time to start thinking ahead for next year. Funding is available for producers in the North Raccoon and Cedar Creek watersheds for cover crops, no-till/ strip-till and other conservation management practices. Farmers and landowners who qualify for the Mississippi River Basin Initiative (MRBI) receive increased fi nancial assistance rates. Call 712-732-3096 for more information or visit your local Natural Resources Conservation Service offi ce at 1617 N. Lake Ave in Storm Lake for Buena Vista county or 600 W. Supporters want Kevin Lind in Iowa Rock Hall of FameFriends of Kevin Lind, a Laurens native and popular performer in this area for several decades, have nominated him for the Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for 2014. Lind was a sophomore at Laurens High when he fi rst started performing rock and roll and is still at it as he approaches age 60. He spent nearly 30 years as lead singer with a popular regional rock group called the New Buckeye Band, which in its prime scheduled more than 50 Iowa shows a year. Lind has also headlined many other acclaimed bands and smaller combos over the years after settling near Des Moines. He's appeared at the Simon Estes Amphitheater, the Des Moines Civic Center and entertained on a ship of the Norwegian Cruise Line running from Vancouver to Alaska – plus done lead studio vocal work for Triad Productions. Kevin Lind’s Rock and Roll Reunion recently packed in a large crowd from Laurens at the Wild Rose Casino in Emmetsburg. A blog written by Dick Hakes, another Laurens native, appeared in the Iowa City Press-Citizen and urged fans to contact the Hall of Fame with a note of support for Lind's selection. You can access the blog through this link: http://blogs.press-citizen.com/2013/08/30/this-face-belongs-in-iowa-rock-roll-hall-of-fame/
