Say it with me… “BootS!” Don’t get me wrong, I love my Texas summers but I am tired of sweating every day. I’m ready for some pumpkin spice, a cool breeze, and fall boots! That’s what I like about autumn. There is a noticeable change. Colors come alive and the air gets crisper. Schedules adjust and routines shift. To me, it seems to come at just the right time every year.

The season’s not the only thing changing these days. Local Life has under-gone some change, as well. My confidant, dear friend, and office man-ager of almost 5 years has been promoted to full-time mom! Darla has taken on the challenge of PTA’s, volunteering, and just generally being available for her growing babies on a 24/7 basis. It’s a job she’s already great at and we wish her all the best. She will be greatly missed. That smile and her attitude is literally irreplaceable but we all charge forward knowing she is following her heart. Of course, I was sad and, quite hon-estly, a little scared to not have her around. But, as has been the case year after year, Local Life continues to be blessed.

I’m so proud to welcome two new faces to our team. Taylor Rice joins the sales & networking team, recently returning from some time in Denver, CO. Taylor has an infectious smile, as well, and her personality is a refreshing change that I’m excited for you all to see. To keep us all or-ganized, we’re lucky to introduce Jill Fochesato as Office Manager. Jill brings knowledge and experience to our office that is sure to make us all better. Please join me in welcoming these two ladies to the Local Life team and make sure to say hello when you see them on the street.

I have to admit. I’m not always great at change. This change in particular gave me anxiety and concern, to say the least. But I’ve realized you’re never too old to learn. What I’ve learned is attitude and perception can shape a lot of how the world treats you. No doubt, I am a creature of habit and routine. I like things the way I like them. That being said, some-times you need a jolt to force you to see things through a different lens. You need something to force you to improve. That’s what I’m excited most about with our new team. Fresh eyes lend to innovation of what we do and I certainly want to continue to deliver an ever-improving product to our neighborhood. I hope you all enjoy the things to come. And, who knows… Maybe I’m not the only one who has some rejuvenating change in their future. Keep the faith, friends! With the right perspective, your change can be just as refreshing. I’ll see you on the streets (with a new pep in my step!)

THE GHOSTS OF

BURLESON’S PAST

Like many towns founded long ago, Burleson has its share of ghost stories.Online, one can read accounts of residents who have experienced the ghosts of Bethesda Road. The story goes back more than 60 years ago....

A school bus stalled on the train tracks on Bethesda Road. It was hit by an oncoming train and most of the children and the driver were killed. Nowadays, many people have reported that they have stopped their car on the train tracks, put it in neutral and waited. They say the ghosts of the children come and push the car off the tracks. Get your car good and dusty beforehand and you may even see small handprints in the dust afterward…you know, legend has it. These aren’t the only paranormal sightings near the train tracks along this road. If you’re looking for a good case of chills, check out those stories and decide for yourself.

As Halloween approaches, many of us find ourselves seeking out a creepy ghost story or paranormal experience. Skeptics and believers alike will enjoy a ghost tour of Old Town Burleson. Pat Dexheimer and Vivian Wright run Burleson Historical Ghost Tours and take thrill seekers and history buffs on a tour of Old Town Burleson and

its ghosts every Friday and Saturday night. The tours leave from the Burleson Visitor Center at 7:30 p.m. and meander through Old Town, typically stopping at Babe’s Chicken Dinner House, Grump’s Burgers and the former site of D’Vine Wine on Main Street, then on to Market Emporium, Old Town Brewery and the Baker House on Ellison Street. Many of these places are or recently have been under construction, which has been known to stir up ghosts.

For skeptics, the history of the buildings featured on the tour prove to be interesting enough, but believers and wanna-believers will love the stories of the ghosts of Burleson’s past. As Ms. Dexheimer explains, they have been doing these tours for 10-12 years. The tours are interactive with absolutely nothing staged. The owners of the buildings on the tour allow them to enter the buildings to gain first-hand experience with some of the ghostly hot-spots of Old Town Burleson. The tour guides bring along EMF and K2

meters, but guests are encouraged to bring their own cameras, use ghost apps and other equipment.

People want to know, “Will I see a ghost or have a paranormal experience on the tour?” Obviously, we can’t guarantee that, but Ms. Dexheimer tells us, “We know our ghosts and our ghosts know us.” She reports that their ghosts sometimes make their disapproval known if she or Ms. Wright skip a part of their story while giving a tour. They also seem to have a fondness for blondes and redheads, with guests reporting having their hair

pulled and ponytails undone. However, Ms. Dexheimer explains, most of the paranormal experiences occur when guests shoot pictures behind them. Unexplainable shadows and ghost fog often show up in pictures when guests view them on their computer from home.

Lending credibility to Burleson’s ghosts are investigations launched by well-known ghost hunters, Larry and Stacie Overman, formerly of the SyFy channel’s show Ghost Mine. Another amateur ghost hunter, Ken Strong of MyLifeWithGhosts.com, has shared his investigations into the ghosts of Old Town Burleson on his website.

At only $10 per person, a Burleson Historical Ghost Tour is less expensive than most of the fake haunted houses one can visit this time of year. Take a chance and see if you will be visited by some actual spirits this year.

The fun takes place on Ellison Street, between Main Street and Johnson Avenue (124 W. Ellison St.). Children, birth-12 years old, will arrive in their favorite Halloween costumes – trick-or-treat bags in hand – for the ultimate in trick or treating. Local businesses, churches, and civic groups set up booths and decorate their vehicles for trunk-or-treat fun.
