Happy Fall y’all! Cooler temps are roll-ing in and I, for one, am glad to see them come. Mostly, because I love me some Fall outfits, but the weather has been nice, too. My kids like to count down the number of Saturdays left until Christmas and they’re quick to remind me if I forget. So, here’s my reminder to you. By the time this hits there will only be 7 Saturdays left. Crazy,
right? It feels like we just finished July and we’re already overlooking Thanksgiving. I need it to slow down a little.
Your schedule has a lot to do with the chaos of time. October was surely a hectic month for us at Local Life. Balancing four major proj-ects and still wearing the hat(s) of good mom and wife can sometimes prove to be a chore. I know it can be a struggle for many of you out there, as well. Juggling a work and home life balance can leave a girl flat worn out. Lately, I think I’ve been on an hour-by-hour man-agement regiment. (Not something I would recommend!) To all you working moms out there walking a similar gauntlet, I say keep up the good work. Hopefully, you have a family that recognizes your efforts and appreciates you for it. I certainly know mine does and I love them for it. It’s really what makes us all work a little bit harder. Know that your children see you and you are doing a great thing to influence the type of work ethic they will inherit, as they grow older.
Busyness usually translates into opportunity in my world. I’m grate-ful I have dreams and goals to pursue and conquer. I may have to remind myself of that from time to time, but these are good problems to have. On that note, I’d like to announce we are growing our team here at Local Life. I’m looking for help on our sales team in the form of part-time, to start. As we expand our reach into the Mansfield area, we have a great opportunity for the right person. Flexible hours and a fun, rewarding job are just a few of the benefits of working for Local Life. Check out the ad inside if you or someone you know might be interested. Plus, I like to think we’re a lot of fun to hang out with. I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday this month and can find at least a minute or two to slow down, soak in the fruits of your labor, and enjoy the life you have created. See you on the streets!

Local Life | NOVEMBER 2015 5
It’s a joyous time of year, but let’s face it, for many of us it is also a season marked with excess, overbooked schedules and stress. It’s easy for anyone to get caught up in lists, plans and celebrations. As adults, when we reach our breaking point, most of us have learned to take a step back, look at the big picture and be grateful for things that matter most: family, good health, shelter, food…the basics. However, these moments of reflection don’t come naturally for most kids. It’s up to us to help our children stay grounded, grateful and gracious, and there is never a more perfect time to teach these lessons than now.
GRouNdING YoUR CHILDREN… The Good WAYWhen you talk about being grounded with your children, chances are it has an entirely different meaning. In this sense, being grounded is great thing! Regardless of the terminology you use with your kids, teaching them to be grounded in life is really the foundation of raising grateful children. Grounding your children starts with setting reasonable expectations, followed by a good dose of perspective.
When your son’s wish list for Santa has 20-something items or your daughter’s plans include three parties, two concerts, a day at Six Flags and every other school activity, it’s time to have a conversation that sets expectations. For Mr. I-Want-It-All, “I see you’ve got quite a list here. Remember that Santa has a lot of other children’s wishes to grant too, let’s narrow this list down to your top three or four so he doesn’t think you’re being greedy.” For the overcommitted child, “It’s a busy time of year for all of us. I have my holiday party for work and your brother has been invited
to a few things as well. Let’s try not to have more than two activities outside of school a week.”
If you’re a parent whose child has never thrown a fit over something petty, congratulations! You can skip this part (liar). If not, it’s time to have a talk with your kid about perspective. There was a meme that made the rounds on Facebook recently that said, “Hell hath no fury like a toddler who wanted the green cup instead of the orange cup.”
While toddlers are certainly known for petty fits, they’re not the only ones to lose sight of the big picture. The next time your child or teen acts entitled or gets upset because Mom or Dad had the nerve to say no to something, remind them how their friend’s dad works two jobs just so they can pay for the things they need. Remind them that you used to have to leave a message on an answering machine that was AT HOME when it was time for your mom to pick you up, then sit there and hope she got it soon. Yes, it sounds kind of like the, “There are starving children in Africa” lecture our parents used to give us. But guess what? There really are starving children in Africa. If you can share true stories and imagery (use the Internet, most of us didn’t have that at our disposal as children) that will resonate with your children and the situation, it will provide good food for thought for them to contemplate while they are grounded—in the not-so-good way.

Local Life | NOVEMBER 2015 7
RAisING GRoUNdeD, GRAteFUl CHIldreN means making them understand that not everyone has what they have. One child’s idea of necessity (ex. a single Barbie doll) may another child’s mere wish. It can be hard for young children to understand how Santa can bring a new bike, a tablet and a dozen other gifts to one house, but only a few board games and a coat to another. Take this into consideration when planning family gifts versus Santa gifts.
GRATeFUL CHILDREN uNdeRSTAND The BiGGeR piCTURERaising grateful children begins with parents who demonstrate gratitude on a daily basis. A quick, heartfelt pause each day to be thankful for things like family, food, and your home show children that having these kinds of things is most important. It helps them understand the difference between needs versus wants and necessity versus luxury. This demonstrates gratitude on the most basic level, but sometimes, particularly with younger children, parents need to allow children to express gratitude on their level. While good health, food, clothing and shelter are some of the most basic things one might be grateful for, those aren’t necessarily the most important things to a four year old. As you go around the table sharing what you’re grateful for, whether you do this daily or as part of your Thanksgiving tradition, there’s nothing wrong with a young child mentioning his Ninja Turtle toys. Those are important things to him. The practice of simply
hearing what people of all ages are grateful for will help him see the bigger picture and eventually lead him to express his gratitude on a deeper level. Who knows? Next year, he might even be grateful for his little brother.
TeAChiNg CHILDREN The ArT of GRACIoUs eXPReSsIoNGrateful versus gracious. One is an inward feeling while the other is an outward expression. And there is no time like the holidays to work on that outward expression. As parents, we know that our children are indeed grateful for the gifts they receive, but that doesn’t mean express it outwardly in the most appropriate way. With young children, it typically requires a very straightforward conversation about the right things to say about a gift. A simple “thank you” is pretty easy for any child who can speak, so parents need to prepare children with ways to express gratitude, even if the gift wasn’t exactly right. Instead of “it wasn’t the one I wanted,” say “I love the purple color” or “Ooh, I don’t have this one!” Instead of “I already have this,” suggest “This is one of my favorites!” or “You know just what I like.”
For older kids and teens, most parents worry less about them saying something totally ungrateful and more about their attitude and facial expressions. Teach them to go beyond “thank you” and say something thoughtful about each gift...and say it with a sincere, happy expression. Practice it at home while opening family gifts and provide some “critiques,” when needed, before heading out to a big family occasion.
Kids tend to be an open book. It’s up to us to fill that book with meaningful, sincere words by teaching them to be grounded, grateful and gracious every day.

Here at Local Life, we take great pride in our responsibility to keep our reading public informed. That’s why I must tell you about my recent dining experience at Burleson’s newest restaurant in Old Town – Hickory Tree Grill. Brought to you from the same ownership that has blessed us with Stone Soup Café and Mojo’s TexMex Smokehouse, Hickory Tree is a daring blend of TexMex, BBQ, and Cajun all mashed together in a wonderful pallet that certainly works, in my book. For me, restaurants start and end with the menu. Ambiance and environment are a major plus, but I’m there to eat, first and foremost. This joint gets high marks all the way around. Ok, let’s get to it.
It was wet outside and I had just finished a long commute. There was no chance I was cooking. Thus, my wife suggested we try the new spot. We walked in, shook off the rain, and were instantly greeted by a very friendly staff. I had the steak and she had the Street Tacos. I always start with the steak, by the way. It’s the only true measure. Both were winners. The steak was different than I was used to, but a positive experience. Even the way it was displayed on the plate was cool. Crawfish-boiled mashed
potatoes garnished the side and they were fantastic. There are a ton of different taco options to try from steak, brisket, and chicken to shrimp, pulled pork, and more. There’s even a venison and potato option. The entire menu was fun to browse. The choices are as unique as they are bold. It makes for a very tough order because everything looks so good. Go ahead and plan multiple trips. Fajitas, burgers, and a creative spin on soups and salads also make their way on the menu, as well as plenty of options for the kids.
If you’re into sampling a cold beverage with your meal, the creativity didn’t stop with the food. I sampled their twist on the Old-Fashioned and it didn’t disappoint. Flavored moonshine and craft beers can all be found on the list. My overall review is that words just won’t give you the experience we had when we were there. You’re going to have to go check it out for yourself. My wife has been a few times already and it certainly made it’s way onto my restaurant rotation after only one visit. Well done, Hickory Tree! After Mojo’s, I didn’t think you could top wood-smoked cuisine. This place, however, is something every Local foodie has got to try!
