Forest Service Seeks Comment on Emigrant Crevice Locatable Mineral Withdrawal Scoping Document Bozeman, MT… The Custer Gallatin National Forest is seeking additional public input on a proposal to recom-mend withdrawing two areas of National Forest System (NFS) lands in the upper Yellowstone watershed from mineral entry. The areas being considered for withdraw-al are in the Emigrant Peak area, south of Livingston, Montana and the Crevice Mountain area east of Gardi-ner, Montana. Analysis of the proposed withdrawal will disclose the effects of precluding reasonably foreseeable locatable mineral entry for 20 years. No other USFS land management activities or activities on privately owned lands would be affected by withdrawal from min-eral entry. Scoping comments should be submitted by July 19, 2017. The purpose of the mineral withdrawal is to protect pub-lic lands and resource values in the historic “Emigrant Mining District” and the “Jardine/Crevice Mining Dis-trict” from adverse effects of reasonably foreseeable lo-catable mineral exploration and mining, subject to valid existing rights. “The need for the withdrawal is based on potential impacts to the scenic integrity, important wildlife corridors, and high quality recreation values found in the Emigrant and Crevice Mountain areas,” said Dan Seifert, Assistant Forest Geologist and Project Man-ager. A Notice of Proposed Withdrawal was approved by the Secretary of the Interior and published in the Federal Register on November 22, 2016. Publication of this no-tice temporarily segregated lands in the Emigrant Crev-ice areas from location and entry under the United States mining laws for up to two years and kicked off a 90 day public comment period. The Forest and Bureau of Land Management hosted a public meeting in January 2017 to answer questions about the potential mineral withdraw-al. The agencies received thousands of comments dur-ing this comment period which have been analyzed to identify issues and concerns specific to withdrawal. The identified issues and concerns are listed in the scoping letter and will be considered as the environmental analy-sis moves forward. Given the high level of public interest and concern about this project and the expedited timeframe to complete the environmental review process the Custer Gallatin Forest is temporarily re-assigning Alex Sienkiewicz to lead the project’s interdisciplinary team and work with partners and community members. Alex will temporarily leave his position as the Yellowstone District Ranger to lead the minerals withdrawal analysis effort. Specific project information, including the scoping let-ter, withdrawal application, Federal Register Notice, withdrawal area maps, and comments submitted during the 90 day Federal Register comment period are availa-ble on the project webpage at:www.fs.fed.usda.gov/project/?project+51258. If scoping comments are sub-mitted electronically, they must be submitted using the USFS’s Electronic Comment System – Comment Analy-sis Response Application (CARA). To submit com-ments electronically, please go to the project webpage at http://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=51258 and click on the “Comment/Object on Project” link on the right side of the project webpage. Comments can also be mailed to Mary Erickson, Forest Supervisor, Custer Gallatin National Forest, 10 East Babcock, P.O. Box 130, Bozeman, MT 59715. They can be FAX’d to 406-587-6758. All comments received are subject to Free-dom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. For more in-formation, please contact Dan Seifert at 406-446-4520.

Two Visitors Injured by Bison at Mud Volcano • Wednesday morning, June 28, 2017, a married couple received injuries after being “butted” by a bison at

Mud Volcano, just north of Lake Village in Yellowstone National Park. • Theodore Schrader, 74, and Patsy Holmes, 72, from Heber City, Utah, were taking photographs on a

boardwalk at Mud Volcano, when a bison approached them. The bison butted Mrs. Holmes, who then fell into Mr. Schrader and both individuals fell to the ground.

• Park rangers responded immediately and evacuated the couple from the trail, a quarter mile, to the road. The couple was transported to the Lake Clinic.

• Mr. Schrader had minor injuries. • Mrs. Holmes was transported by Life Flight to Idaho Falls, Idaho. She was in stable condition. • Citations were not issued to either individual. • Visitors: Wildlife in Yellowstone National Park are wild. When an animal is near a trail, boardwalk, park-

ing lot, or in a developed area, give it space. Stay 25 yards (23 m) away from all large animals - bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, and coyotes and at least 100 yards (91 m) away from bears and wolves. If need be, turn around and go the other way to avoid interacting with a wild animal in close proximity.

• This is the first confirmed incident of a bison injuring visitors in 2017. • In 2015, five people were injured after approaching bison. • Please protect the park and protect yourselves.
