Why should I bother buying local produce?

Local produce includes everything produced locally. This directory gives you a listing of what is produced and available within 10 miles of Hadlow.

Here are some good reasons to buy local goods:

It supports your local economySmall-scale producers are often struggling to compete with large •supermarket chains.Local produce can directly •support local businesses, local employment and keep money in the local economy by cutting out the middleman, through direct selling, which in turnincreasesfinancialreturns.Personal contact with a local producer can give you a real •understanding of how something is grown or processed.

Reducing food miles‘Food miles’ means the distance food has travelled from where it is •produced to where it is purchased, and onto where it is consumed. Food distribution by road freight is the fastest growing transport sector •here in the UK and is a major contributor to air pollution - it takes 68 calories of air fuel to transport one calorie of carrot into the UK! 13% of the UK’s total fuel consumption goes on packaging and •transporting food.

Environmental BenefitsLocal food production ensures that local land is put to good use.•Local land is maintained to a high standard, which in turn increases •environmental quality and attracts visitors to the countryside.

Reducing packagingVast quantities of packaging are used to protect produce when it is •being transported around the country and even the world.Local produce generally has a minimal amount of packaging which cuts •down on the use of valuable natural resources.

Social ImportanceBuying locally encourages links between local land owners and the •communities they are in.It increases social connections between urban and rural communities.•

Farmers’ Markets

Support your local communityShopping at your local Farmers’ Market helps support local farmers and producers. You’ll also be investing in your local community and producers from the surrounding area. Every £10 spent with a Farmers’ Market is worth £25 to the local economy, compared with just £14 for every £10 spent in a supermarket.* Some markets run a regular refreshments stall in aid of local charities, too. *Source:KentLifeMagazine

Kent’s newest Farmers’ MarketsTonbridge farmers’ market - the new ‘kid’ on the block This new farmers’ market was set up by Steve Wood in June 2011, and has quickly turned into the biggest Farmers’ Market in Kent.

Once a month Tonbridge Farmers’ Market takes over the Sovereign Way car park to host a food, crafts and all things natural feast. There are over 60 stalls run by local people who love what they do, so speak to them about how their produce gets to you.

There are many fresh local produce stalls, offering delicious seasonal fruits and vegetables. If you are looking for some home-made cuisine for your evening meal, then be sure to stop at the Mediterranean, Indian or the Tropical Hotpot take-away stalls. Each market tends to have a theme, and offers a stall to local charities to promote their good causes and raise funds.

Along with unique hand crafted delights, which are perfect presents, you may alsofindyourselfatreatortwowhenyoudiscoverthefudge, chocolateandcupcake stalls. There is an abundance of hot tasty food to enjoy, whilst relaxing in the market eatery where you can watch various cookery demonstrations.Contact: [email protected]: 07557 739903
