Message from Inspector Peter Tuff Eccleshill Neighbourhood Policing Team

Message from Inspector Peter Tuff Eccleshill Neighbourhood Policing Team

n average in more than one in four burglaries, the thief doesn’t have to force anything, they can just walk in through and open or unlocked door or even climb through an insecure window, it couldn’t

be easier. However, with the arrival of summer it is a timely reminder for us all to be equally security conscious.

When the sun is shining it is so tempting to throw open the doors and windows to let in the fresh air. Nothing wrong with that, but just think you might be letting in more than just fresh air if a little care is not taken. It’s not easy to be vigilant all the time. It’s tempting just to bob upstairs or round next door for a minute leaving your home wide open to the opportunist thief. And I’m sure I’m not the only one to have gone to bed on the odd occasion, forgetting to lock the door or secure a window. But, if we can just think ‘Burglar’ we may prevent ourselves from becoming another statistic. The next time you leave a wallet mobile phone or keys next to an unlocked front door or an open window it can present an incredibly easy target for burglars who can take them in just seconds. Let’s not hand it to them on a plate!

Having said all that, the number of household burglaries has fallen signifi cantly in recent weeks so the message is getting across. People are taking time to ensure their homes have a good standard of security. Sub standard locks are being replaced and sash jammers and alarms fi tted………have a great Summer! There are a number of measures we can take to guard against sneak thieves that include:

Lock all doors and windows when working in the garden or garage.

A simple security chain can prevent unwanted entry in to the home whilst leaving a door open for fresh air.

Never leave keys in the locks of doors or windows or on view.

Avoid leaving valuables near windows, for example mobile phones, handbags, jewellery, expensive ornaments and keys.

Consider installing an audible warning system on external doors which will alert you to possible intruders. (Door alarms are for sale via our Watch shop)

On Saturday 23rd July the police station at Eccleshill hosted the 2nd annual open day. The event was very well attended and again we were blessed with fantastic weather. I can’t thank enough our co-hosts Church on the Way for their help and assistance. Thank-you to all partner agencies who attended and helped to make the event so successful.

Bingley ChamberBingley Chamber of Trade & Commerce aims to represent the views of all local businesses, improve local amenities and help the Bingley area to remain a vibrant place to both work and live.

As well as organising and funding local events such as the hugely popular Santa’s Grotto at the town’s annual Christmas market, the Chamber also acts as the ‘voice’ of local businesses in lobbying the council for improvements to the town centre. In addition the Chamber has recently launched the web site www.bingleylocal.co.uk which has been designed and built by Chamber members Respond Marketing.

The aim is for this site to become the starting point for anyone requiring any information about the local area. A comprehensive directory of local businesses along with full contact details, information about local events and vouchers for exclusive offers from local shops and businesses can all be found on the site as well as news and items of interest.Jamie Illingworth, President of the Chamber, stated: “We hope that you will take time to visit the site and please let us know of any improvements you would like to see on the site in the future. The Chamber exists to help all Bingley based businesses and we aim to make the new site the one stop shop for all information about the local area.

“If you have a business in the Bingley area please check that we have your correct details shown and tell us of any changes that are required.”

Jamie added: “The Chamber is run entirely on a voluntary basis and is always on the lookout for new members. Membership starts at only £25 a year. Meetings are held locally every fi ve to six weeks and all local businesses are welcome to join - , contact details are below for more information and meeting dates. With the school holidays well underway, the kid’s treats in the cupboard and little time for yourself, every Mum knows that sticking to a diet and shifting those unwanted pounds is almost impossible!

According to recent research, the average mum gains around half a stone during the summer holidays, tucking into Kids leftover as well as an increased amount of ice creams during the hot weather. As the sunshine increases more and more people are spending time picnicking, snacking away on fatty foods such as pork pies

and sausage rolls. As a busy working mum, Nina Clyde is one woman who has taken control of both her weight and her future after dropping an amazing three dress sizes on the LighterLife programme.

“I was a proud mum but ashamed of my body,” says Nina “This has not really been a diet, it is a whole new way of thinking and eating. The Foodpacks were a godsend for a busy mum. Thank you LighterLife for making something I thought could only happen with a miracle become reality!”

What is LighterLife? There aren’t many diet plans that will educate you about why you’re eating particular foods when you’re not hungry, but the LighterLife programmes help you to understand why you overeat at certain times. So it’s not just about weight loss but about weight management too!

How does LighterLife work? LighterLife initially combines the use of meal replacement products with weekly group sessions run by a fully trained LighterLife Counsellor so you lose weight and get help doing it. Then we help you to reintroduce everyday food in a structured way so you fi nd a healthy balanced eating plan that works for you and keeps the weight off.

You can choose from a wide variety of LighterLife Foodpacks (soups, shakes and bars). They’re tasty, easy to make up, and ideal if you have a busy life. How many Foodpacks you eat a day will depend on which of our programmes is right for you:

• Four Foodpacks a day.• Three Foodpacks plus

a portion-controlled meal from a list of healthy, everyday foods.

If you’re interested in joining LighterLife or want to fi nd out more, call Christine on 01274 222610 or visit www.lighterlife.com

Valentine’s Day started in the time of the Roman Empire, in tribute to the Goddess Juno. The following day was the Feast of Lupercalia, where

sacrifices and rituals took place in honour of a heathen god. While sacrifices seem rather terrifying, feasts always sound good to us, and a humble root vegetable may well be your secret to success this February 14th.

Forget imported, out of season asparagus, beetroot is the ultimate Valentine’s Day vegetable. Since Roman times, beetroot juice has been considered an aphrodisiac and its vibrant bright pink colour is stunningly romantic. Jane’s Beetroot Soup is a great Valentine’s Day dish, light and full of flavour, with a striking swirl of sour cream and chives. Beetroot is also incredibly versatile, so

beetroot (or carrot) cake by Jane Baxter

Instructions:Preheat the oven to 165°C. Grease and line a 25cm loose-based cake tin. Mix together the flour, baking powder and sugar in a large bowl. Add the sultanas and grated beetroot. Beat

the oil and eggs together, then add to the bowl. Combine with either a wooden spoon or electric mixer. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 1-1¼ hours. Insert a metal skewer into the cake; if it comes out clean, then the cake is cooked. Cool on a wire rack. As an alternative, substitute beetroot for carrots to make a carrot cake – it works

just as well.

Guy Watson began farming at Riverford in Devon over 20 years ago. He was an organic vegbox pioneer, giving customers the freshest possible seasonal fruit and veg at a fair price to customers and growers. Many of our customers are as passionate about the business as he is; no-one wanted the business to be large-scale. Guy teamed up with ‘sister’ farms who shared his passion and wanted to re-build the connection between grower and consumer.

River Nene was the first sister farm in 2005. From Sacrewell Lodge Farm near Peterborough, we deliver to homes throughout the east of England. River Swale followed in 2007, from Home Farm in North Yorkshire. River Swale supplies veg boxes across Yorkshire and the North East. Riverford at Norton has since opened, delivering organic veg to homes around the Hampshire area.

Working as a family of farms means we can maintain our commitment to low food miles, local employment and the support of local farmers and keep a close link between grower and consumer. .For more recipes and to join our box scheme visit: www.riverford.co.uk

Riverford Organic has been voted Best Online Retailer in the Observer Ethical Awards for the second year in a row, voted for by the public. The award was presented by The Observer’s Lucy Siegle at a ceremony at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London on Thursday 9th June. Other hosts of the awards were actor Colin Firth and model Lily Cole.

This is Riverford’s fi fth Observer award: the company won Best Ethical Business 2009 and its restaurant, the Field Kitchen, won Best Ethical Restaurant 2009 and 2010 in the Observer Food Monthly Awards. The organic home delivery company beat off competition from Offset Warehouse, an online shop for ethical clothing and interiors and Wiggly Wigglers, selling natural garden-ing supplies.

Guy Watson, Riverford founder, said “We are amazed and thrilled to have won this award for the second year in a row. The Observer Ethical Awards celebrate businesses and people that are trying to do something genuinely useful. At Riverford we aim for good food, good farming and good business so to be recognised for this is fantastic. Thank you to our customers for all your support over the years.”

Other winners included Compassion in World Farming, James Lovelock and The People’s Supermarket. The Observer Ethical Awards are now in their sixth year.
