improvisation, using props, costume pieces, and ideas

The students will understand how our local community members work together. They will learnabout community jobs and have to develop a skit demonstrating their understanding of what each

career does and how they may interact with one another to make the community we live in.

The students will be assessed by their creation of a skit. For this skit they will be divided up intogroups of four. Each student will pick a career and receive props that go with the career they

picked. The groups will be given ten minutes to decide how they will put their skit together. The

skits need to include what their job is and how each job can work together to create acommunity. The skits can be as creative as they would like them to be or as simple as them

explaining what they are and what they do around the neighborhood.

    Procedures:

Warm Up/Group Discussion: During this discussion we will go over the presentation that

occurred during our last class since it was bring a family member to class day. We were able to

hear about what different careers are like in our community and understand each role they had.

Students were able to ask questions and learn from each others parents and family members. We

will refresh on what we learned and follow up any questions that they students may have.

    Steps for instruction:

Engage: Today we will be focusing on our local community. Who makes up ourcommunity and how they interact with one another. But before we begin we are going

to watch a clip from Postercards from Buster. During this clip you will see how the

community of New York works together. I want you to focus on the people he talks

to and whether or not they are helpful community members.

Demonstration: Now we are going to look at some of our own community members.Through the PowerPoint students will see visuals of local politicians, news anchors,

hospitals, vet clinics and other community places that are walking distance from our

    school.

Activity: Now it is your turn to practice being adult community members. Each one ofyou will choose a career from a hat. Then you will receive props that go along withthat career. Your job is, with the three other people at your table come up with a skit

that includes all the jobs present in your group. Your skit can be as simple as asking

each other what is it that you do? Or it can be funny and make the class laugh. Be

CREATIVE! If you do not know what you career is or what your person does, first

ask your group members, if they dont know then ask me!
