Summer! What comes to mind when you think summer? …Family reunions and picnics? Boating? Gardening? Time with grandchildren? Outdoor grilling? Lawn mowing? For many, travel becomes a common denominator when we think summer.

As I write this, anticipation is running rampant as I prepare for the trip of a lifetime to Paris!

“Travel and change of place impart new vigor to the mind.” (Seneca, Roman philosopher and statesman).

How true and we shouldn’t limit the opportunities. We need new vigor to ignite our minds or conjure up memories of another time in our lives. That being said, I am focusing on traveling with loved ones who have dementia. Dementia friendly travel opportunities are expanding. You can create your own, or you may want to contact a travel agent for some assistance for extended travel.

How Do I Find the Strengthto Move On?

This is a common question I’m asked. Life will throw us curve balls. Whether it’s losing a loved one, illness, job loss, divorce, Þ nancial problems or children’s problems, our inner strengths called resiliency will help us get through it.

It doesn’t matter how old you are and if you handled stress well in the past. Sometimes it’s very difÞ cult to keep picking yourself up and starting over again. Most of us still experience anger, grief and pain but a resilient person can deal with the problem in a healthy way. With the help of family, friends and knowledge of community resources, a good support system will make a world of difference.

According to psychologist Martin Seligman, there are three reasons that can stunt a person’s recovery.

• Personalization - the belief that we are at fault.

• Pervasiveness – the belief the event will affect all areas of our life.

• Permanence – the belief that aftershocks will be forever.

If we can recognize that these negative beliefs are not personal, we will better cope with the situation.

Resilience is not only for the lucky few. It’s a quality that each of us can build.

1. Count your blessings – focus on positive aspects of your life.

2. Make a list of what you can control and can’t control.

3. Keep a journal – a sounding board.

4. Enjoy nature – take long walks and enjoy the beautiful world God created.

5. Be around happy people.

6. Find your hidden gifts through an art form.

News from Roseville Area Schools

With student enrollment projected to grow by more than 1,000 students in the next 10 years and aging facilities in need of maintenance and repair, the district has been hosting a series of community-based committees and meetings since August. The goal is to identify the district’s greatest needs when it comes to facilities and then how the district can best address those needs in a Þ nancially responsible manner.

Five key themes have consistently emerged from conversations and were supported by the majority of participants.

Safety and Security

• Providing secure entrances at every school

• Rerouting visitor entry so visitors must pass through the main ofÞ ce

• Providing centralized management of all district security systems

Physical Conditions

• Improving air quality via updated mechanical systems

• Completing needed maintenance work on all district facilities

Capacity

• Addressing existing and growing space concerns at almost every school, most notably RAHS

• Adding ß exible learning spaces at all schools for small group learning and one-on-one support

• Renovating special education spaces

• Constructing spaces for existing programs that are out of space

Learning Spaces

• Acknowledging as education has evolved the district’s facilities have not kept pace with students’ needs

• Developing labs and instruction spaces for career and technical education, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), and specialist areas (music, art, and technology) at all schools

Community Resources

• Ensuring facilities can continue to support our district’s strong community education programming

• Expanding and/or improving learning spaces that are either too small, too few, or in very poor condition

• Addressing the need for facilities that house programs for our community’s older adults

• Creating spaces that support a healthy lifestyle for all community members of all ages

TRANSPORTATION - 651.604.3535 The Roseville Area Senior Program (RASP) is dedicated to providing door-to-door transportation service. We accommodate residents age 60 and older who live in the Roseville Area School District boundaries and select municipalities. The RASP bus provides transportation for various needs, including medical appointments, banking, shopping, volunteering, recreation, and more. We also have volunteer drivers who use their own vehicles to provide rides to medical and dental appointments that are further away. Advance registration is required to start this service. There is a service fee, and you may qualify for a sliding fee amount based on your annual income.

SERVICE COORDINATION - 651.604.3528 We connect older adults with local and metro community services and resources. Phone consultation, in-home assessment, and development of service plans are available. After a needs assessment is completed by the service coordinator, trained support volunteers are available to provide services to help homebound older adults in the Roseville Area School District. Services include: friendly visiting in the home, family meeting facilitation, in-home assessments (falls prevention) and home health care services. There is a service fee, and you may qualify for a sliding fee amount based on your annual income.

MEALS ON WHEELS

We provide daily, fresh or frozen, nutritionally balanced noontime meals Mon-Fri for Roseville Area School District adults over 60 and certiÞ ed disabled adults who are unable to prepare or access food or choose not to cook themselves.

This service is more than just a meal. Meals on Wheels also serves as a critical wellness visit by volunteers for homebound older and disabled adults. Advance registration is required to start this service. There is a service fee. You may qualify for a sliding fee amount based on your annual income.

Roseville Alzheimer’s and Dementia Community Action TeamMemory Minders: A Kit for Dementia Caregivers

These kits are available at the Roseville and Shoreview branches of Ramsey County Library. The Memory Minders Kits consist of a zippered pouch with a list of the contents and one or more of the following:

• A speciÞ c activity for use with patrons with memory loss (such as a puzzle or bingo)

• One or two books with illustrations to spark memory

• A CD with music

• A booklet of Caregiver resources,

• A book on Caregiver activities for people with memory loss.

Funding is provided by Ramsey County Library and local memory care/assisted living facilities.

Dementia: Caring & Coping Series A speaker series presented by Roseville Alzheimer’s & Dementia Community Action Team and Ramsey County Library.

July 13 - Living and Dying with Dignity: Speaker: Dr. Steven Miles, a geriatrician and ethicist at University of Minnesota Center for Bioethics, examines how a diagnosis of dementia affects health care decisions and end-of-life planning.

August 10 - Testing for Dementia: Diagnosis to Treatment and Real-World Implications. Speaker: Sonia Coelho Mosch, Ph. D. Learn how a practicing neuropsychologist uses paper-pencil tests to differentiate dementia from normal aging, help clarify types of dementia, and assist with what this means for the individual and their family in terms of treatments, how much assistance is needed, and future planning.

September 14 - Why Can’t My Family Agree? This program examines difficult family dynamics that often accompany caring for someone with dementia, including use of counselors and family meetings to help.
