SAN BERNARD ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE sbec.org 20 Texas Co-op Power SAN BERNARD EC December 2017 Co-op News SAN BERNARD ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE that two winners of Texas Co-op Power’s 2017 Holiday Recipe Contest have been selected from our membership! The grand prizewinner is Rebekah Stewart from Hockley, and a sweet cat- egory winner is Dawn Hodges from Bellville. Baking and sharing sweets and recipes is as much a part of the holidays as wrapping presents, and cooperative members from all over the state send in recipes to share with other members for the contest. Both ladies share a love for the kitchen and experimenting with new and exciting flavors. They both share their love of cooking with family and friends, and now, with our membership. Hodges said her Aunt Mary inspired her love for cooking, baking and farm living. She loved visiting her aunt’s farm in Monaville. “My times working on the farm were so special to me, and I am sure those days are what instilled in me the desire to cook and to one day live on a farm.” Stewart’s origin story differs somewhat. “I have loved cook- ing since I was a child,” she said. “My mom didn’t like to cook, and I felt like the love of cooking was just something that was in me. I would love to try different recipes since I was a child and have become more adventurous as an adult.” When asked about their favorite recipes, both ladies replied, “Desserts!” “I loved cooking comfort food like mac-n-cheese, lemon tarts and pies. My family loves my beef stroganoff,” Stewart added. “I love anything with fresh ingredients,” explained Hodges. “We grow our own produce, raise chickens for eggs and meat, and have cattle and pigs. I encourage people to cook with the best and freshest ingredients you can because your family will love the food—and you for making it.” Stewart’s contest-winning recipe is a warm gingerbread cake with apple compote and lemon basil sauce. “The magazine said to create something that makes you think of the holidays, and gingerbread was the first thing that came to mind when I thought of the holidays,” Stewart said. She experimented with a plain lemon sauce and one with basil, and found that she liked the combination of the two together. Hodges submitted her famous pineapple cream cheese pie. “I submitted my recipe because it is really good,” laughed Hodges. “It started out as a normal pie recipe, and then I added coconut and made it more like a cheesecake. Who doesn’t love cream cheese?” Both women enjoy cooking as a hobby and career. Stewart offers cooking and baking classes for kids and adults; Hodges has published a cookbook of her favorite recipes and hosts antique shows twice a year. These two women love to share their love of cooking, and we are so happy to call them San Bernard EC members. Local Bakers Win Big! Rebekah Stewart
