Injured Grizzly Bear near Eldridge Creek Means Visitors Need to Take Precautions West Yellowstone, MT – Forest Service and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Park officials are warning visitors of an injured bear near Eldridge Creek up the Taylor’s Fork drainage. Officials are asking visitors to the area to be very cautious when in the general vicinity. Taylor’s Fork is located in the Gallatin Canyon between Big Sky and West Yellowstone, Montana. The bear was injured on September 14th through an encounter with two hunters at the head of Eldridge Creek. The encounter happened just east of the bentonite sluff “blow out” that drains into Lightning Creek, roughly 1.25 miles east of Lightning Trailhead. The hunters heard the bear charging them. One individual fired a several handgun rounds in the direction of the bear that got within a few feet of him before turning away. Forest Service and Montana FWP law enforcement officials have investigated the site and found several drops of blood however, the wounded bear has not been located. The Forest Service has posted warning signs at Eldridge, Wapiti and Lightning Creek trail access points and will continue working with Montana FWP to search for the bear and monitor the situation. There are no closures in place at this time. Some general safety tips when visiting bear country to keep in mind are:• Follow the Custer Gallatin Food

Storage Order and appropriately store all attractants.

• Carry bear spray, know how to use it and have it readily available.

• Avoid hiking or hunting alone if possible and never let your small children run ahead or wander.

• Make noise by talking, clapping and singing to avoid startling a bear.

• Stick to the trail to minimize potential bear encounters.

• Be aware of your surroundings. Use caution and make plenty of noise and avoid bear food sources. If you smell something dead or see birds circling overhead avoid the area.

• Hike during the daylight hours. Bears are most active during early morning and late afternoon hours.

• Anyone moving quickly (i.e. mountain bikers, trail runners) is at a higher risk of surprising a bear.

• Watch for bear signs – tracks, scat and markings on trees are all good indicators.

• If you encounter a bear, never run away.

For additional information please contact the Hebgen Lake Ranger District at 406-823-6961 or visit the Custer Gallatin National Forest or Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks online.

The Gardiner Chamber of Commerce is requesting the owners of the vehicles illegally parked at the rodeo grounds to remove their vehicles immediately. The rodeo grounds are private property and intended for the benefit of the Gardiner community – it is not a dumping ground for unwanted items. Any vehicle at the rodeo grounds is required to be issued a parking permit which you can obtain at the Chamber of Commerce located at 216 Park St. We have scheduled the removal of illegally parked vehicles and will not be liable for the damages. Finally, camping, and overnight parking is still prohibited; there are no exceptions. Thank you for your cooperation.

Illegally parked vehicles at the Gardiner Rodeo Grounds are scheduled for removal on the week of September 27th!

New remote fire detected in the southeast corner of Yellowstone• At about 11:45 a.m. Monday, September 21, 2020, a ranger on a backcountry patrol in the Heart Lake area

(southeast corner of Yellowstone) detected the new Hancock Fire. • The 0.1-acre fire is believed to be lightning-ignited, since a strike was seen very close to that location a

few days prior. • The tree that is on fire is smoldering, with no open flame.• Since the fire has low spread potential and is located in a

remote area, several miles from a trail, fire staff will monitor it and will not take direct action.

• There are no closures in the area. Campsites and trails remain open.

• The Lone Star Fire continues to burn, yet with minimal activity. For more information, visit Current Fire Activity.

• Fire danger in the Yellowstone area remains very high; campfires in the backcountry are not allowed. All residents and visitors can assist fire efforts by following fire restrictions to reduce the potential of additional starts.

Please keep in mind that when you're dining in town this season you will probably experience a longer than normal wait time with limited options. On July 14th, four buildings were lost in a historic fire, two of which were restaurants. Prior to the fire our town and its restaurants were already seeing record breaking visitation numbers. Since the fire there is even higher pressure on these businesses. Our locals are doing their very best to meet demand with a limited staff and diminished supply chains compared to prior years due to COVID-19. We encourage you to pack your patience when enjoying our variety of excellent dining establishments in Gardiner this season and be nice.
