SIERR A VISTA — Army soldiers on a mission to entertain and educate are taking to the Buena Perform-ing Arts Center stage tonight and tomorrow as the 2015 U.S. Army Soldier Show rolls into Sierra Vista.
Made up of more than two dozen lieuten-ants, sergeants, spe-cialists and privates from across the coun-try, the Soldier Show has toured extensive-ly across the United States since May, show-casing the dancing, singing and acting tal-ents of handpicked sol-diers while highlight-ing this year’s theme, We Serve.
“We go to over 42 venues or garrisons, performing about 82 shows,” said Spc. Tony Brown, social media li-aison for the tour.
After wrapping up the stateside portion of the tour, the show will go overseas to Germa-ny, Italy, Hawaii and Alaska.
“It’s been cool, being able to see so many different people, meet-ing so many different
high officials in the military, traveling to the Pentagon, meet-ing the Sergeant Major of the Army and Chief of Staff. Coming from Fort Bragg and the 82nd Airborne Field A r ti l ler y Unit , it ’s definitely a difference when you see more of the political side then actually being out in the field all the time,” Brown said.
Musical performanc-es have always been a highlight of the show, and this year it looks to offer up a wide variety of styles and genres.
“We have a lieutenant who is a rapper. He’s phenomenal,” he said. “We also have an opera singer this year, which is awesome.”
Each soldier selected to perform had to com-plete a rigorous audi-tion process, which began with a video sub-mission of their talent.
I f chosen to move on, they were f lown out to Fort Sam Hous-ton in San Antonio for an additional week of auditions.
“It’s very tough, they judge you not just on you r p er for m a nc e. That’s the little piece, because they’ve al-
ready seen what you can do on your audition tape. They take you on based on who you are, your character, your personality, how you present yourself as a person,” Brown said. “Then they’ll take you through stuff that you can’t do. So, if I just came in as a dancer, they’ll say, ‘Hey, can you sing?’ They’re try-ing to build up your weakest points.”
Spc. Phi l l ip Mor-ris, of Fort Bragg, said something similar hap-pened to him when he auditioned.
“They have this thing cal led a composite, it was a mix of three songs that we had to sing. I didn’t know any of them. They gave you a day to learn the words and to put your own spin on it, so they
can see what you spe-cifically bring to the table as a musician,” Morris said. “They use what they find in that moment and bring it into the show. The things that they saw in us back in San Anto-nio, on Fort Sam, you see those things in the show.”
Over the last four months on tour, the soldiers have had an opportunity to build on their ta lents as performers.
“I was just singing R&B songs, that’s all I used to do. Now, I’m singing all different types of genres, and within those genres still being able to find myself, and I’m danc-ing. I was never a danc-
er in my entire life,” Morris said.
Beyond being enter-taining, the Soldier Show has a message to get across as well, ex-emplified this year by the theme of We Serve.
“We serve one anoth-er, we serve our coun-try, we serve our com-munity, we serve other veterans. It’s all part of being a soldier,” he said.
After months on the road, the hard work continues to be reward-ing, thanks to the kind words offered by those aud ienc e memb er s who stay after to shake hands and meet the performing soldiers.
“That’s the great-est thing for me, at the end of the show, see-
ing that. You get to see what all the hard work is really about, because you can get bogged down by the long hours. An eight hour drive this way, a six hour drive that way. Sometimes you get tired, but it gets all put into perspective, why you’re doing this. It’s a constant reality check,” Morris said.
The 2015 U.S. Army Soldier Show is free to attend on a first come, f i rst ser ved ba si s . Shows at the Buena Performing Arts Cen-ter on both Thursday and Friday begin at 7 p.m., with doors open-ing at 6 p.m.
