For nearly five decades, my thinking and my actions have been shaped in great measurer by you - the Members of Local 506. Through the years, I have been mentored by leaders such as Enrico Mancinelli and now his son, our International Vice President and Regional Manager and my friend, Joseph Mancinelli. I can proudly say that within my tenure and under Joe’s leadership, LiUNA has never been as united as it is today! The display of solidarity is shown in our everyday initiatives but stood out like never before in 2013, during the “open period.” As you are aware, three months prior to the expiring of a collective agreement, Unions are legally permitted to raid other Unions – this practice is legal but surely not ethical! In fact, LiUNA Local 506 has never initiated a campaign on raiding but we have certainly finished some. With millions of dollars being spent and countless man hours, it is fair to say that we have stood our ground and during the “open period”, no one truly gained membership, but many Law Firms expanded. We must now continue to concentrate on organizing the unorganized and lobby the Provincial Government to reform the legislation on raiding, either by abolishing it or shortening the time period in allowing scab Unions who would rather raid another Union. During that period, we had held special called meetings with our members employed in various sectors. Once again, our members stood proud and stood behind LiUNA Local 506, but our members also gave us a message. Although they are proud to be labourers and would never choose another Union, they are equally as proud to be working in the various sectors we represent. As you are aware, LiUNA Local 506 represents a wide range of workers from: Building Supplies Cement Finishers Cemetery Workers Concrete Sawing & Drilling • Demolition • Formworkers • Hospitality ICI Construction Industrial Workers Line Marking Mason Tenders • Post-Tensioning Power Sector • Precast Waste Management • Waterproofers And so many more Our members are resilient and versatile and first and foremost, LiUNA members under different sectors holding their trade with great respect. We heard you and we are reacting! While keeping our initiatives on branding, we have now a mandate to individualize the proud diversities and craftsmanship that our members work so hard in. You will soon see how our focused efforts will ban together as we pay tribute and promote the individualization of each sector our members are employed in. Brothers and Sisters, this years’ negotiations were a huge success!!! Under the strong leadership of Joe Mancinelli, LiUNA International Vice President and Central & Eastern Canada Regional Manager, Cosmo Mannella, Business Manager of the Ontario Provincial District Council and his Assistant Business Manager, Paul Hickey, I want to congratulate all for the great accomplishment. First time ever, we settled negotiations prior to the expiration of the Provincial ICI Collective Agreement. I am proud to stand together and build a stronger LiUNA! As always, Brothers and Sisters, we will continue to implement changes that will secure an active membership and improved work environment for you and your families. Wish you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas and a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year! In Solidarity, Carmen Principato Business Manager CARMEN PRINCIPATO
