The Beauchmp-Newman Museum i s of q u i t e unusual a r c h i t e c t u r e . Although .t i s a simple b u i l d i n g , a v a r i e t y of s t y l e s were used t o achieve s i m p l i c i t y . 'he western end of t h e house has a p l a i n gabled roo f ; t h e southern end has t epped gabled ends; and t h e s o u t h e a s t e r n c o m e r is hipped.

The no r the rn s i d e , which f a c e s t h e L i t t l e Kanawha River , was f i r s t used ~y Alf red Beauchamp a s t h e en t r ance t o h i s gene ra l s t o r e . A t t h e t ime t h e )aughters of American Pioneers bought t h e p rope r ty , a l a r g e porch had been ldded t o t h i s en t rance . The owners have s i n c e removed i t , exposing t h e worn ; tone d o o r s i l l .

Around 1900, a wooden, two-story s e c t i o n was added t o t h e northwestern :orner of t h e house. Today i t i s be ing covered wi th aluminum s id ing .

Wirt County, West V i r g i n i a , owes q u i t e a b i t of i t s h i s t o r y t o t h e Beauchamp family. For example, t h e f i r s t recorded whi te s e t t l e r t o b u i l d a l og cabin w i t h i n t h e p r e s e n t boundar ies of t h e county was W i l l i a m Beau- champ; i n 1803 Wil l iam's son, David, brought one of t h e f i r s t i n d u s t r i e s t o t h e a r e a by b u i l d i n g a g r i s t m i l l ; and i n 1848 David's son , Al f red , temporari ly donated h i s home t o b e used as a base from which t o organize the county admin i s t r a t i on .

From 1803 u n t i l 1817, t h e v i l l a g e was known a s Beauchamp's M i l l , b u t t he name w a s changed t o E l i zabe th i n t h e l a t t e r year . This change, however was n o t made t o s eve r r e l a t i o n s between t h e Beauchamps and t h e townsfolk, f o r t h e new name w a s chosen i n honor of David's w i fe , E l izabe th .

avid's and E l i z a b e t h ' s son, A l f r ed , was born i n h i s "mother's town." Like h i s f a t h e r , he became i d e n t i f i e d wi th t h e bus ines s i n t e r e s t s of t h e a rea and, l i k e h i s f a t h e r , chose an "Elizabeth" a s h i s b r ide . She was t h e former E l i z a b e t h ' H e n r i e t t a Burns of Meigo County, Ohio.

It i s e s t ima ted t h a t Al f red Beauchamp b u i l t h i s home around 1840, b u t because t h e exac t d a t e is n o t known, i t cannot b e s p e c i f i e d whether El iza- 3eth H e n r i e t t a w a s brought t o t h e house o r had i t b u i l t f o r h e r a f t e r narr iage. Whatever t h e c a s e , t h e home became important t o h e r , t o t h e town ~f El izabe th , and t o t h e e n t i r e county of W i r t . On January 19 , 1848, A l f r e Beauchamp, who w a s a l r e a d y d i s t i n g u i s h e d i n t h e community, was honored by the V i r g i n i a General Assembly i n a b i l l passed c r e a t i n g W i r t County from 3ood and Jackson. One p rov i s ion of t h e b i l l s t a t e s " the j u s t i c e s of t h e peace commissioned and q u a l i f i e d a s a f o r e s a i d , f o r t h e county of W i r t , s h a l l meet a t t h e house now t h e r e s idence of Al f red Beauchamp i n t h e county ~f Wood, s i t u a t e d i n El izabethtown, on t h e f o u r t h Monday i n May next." H i s Jome town w a s t o b e t h e county s e a t , and on May 23, 1848, t h e f i r s t county zourt convened a t t h e Beauchamp home.

Not only was Alf red ~eauchamp ' s home t o become t h e f i r s t a d m i n i s t r a t i v zourt i n W i r t County, b u t on A p r i l 4 , 1848, t h e f i r s t c i r c u i t cou r t convene in t h e house w i t h t h e Honorable David McComas p re s id ing . The f i r s t W i r t Zounty b a r was i n s t i t u t e d a t t h i s meeting and among those ob ta in ing permis- ; ion t o p r a c t i c e i n t h e commonwealth was Arthur I. Boreman, f i r s t governor ~f West V i rg in i a .
