Why Do People Live in Poverty?Poverty is not having your basic needs for living met.

Living in a country which is at war destroys towns, buildings and homes. People can end up with nowhere to live or work.

Big companies that build things, or dig for things like oil, coal and gas, take land away from local people who grow their own crops or who keep animals on the land to sell the meat or milk.

Some countries help the rich people get richer so the poor people get poorer. Many poor people have no way of earning more money because they are not given the chances (or respect) that they should have.

Why Do People Live in Poverty?

In many countries, poor people cannot go to school. This means they cannot get any qualifications to get better jobs and earn more money.

Think about it

What do you think about the reasons why people live in poverty?

No chance to go to school

Human RightsWhat do you think every person has a right to have or expect?

right to life right to an education

right to liberty and

security

right to freedom of thought, religion and

belief

What Are You Guilty of Wasting? We are all guilty of wasting many of the world’s resources.

We run baths and showers longer than we need to; we leave the taps running when we could turn them off.

We buy more clothes than we need; we throw them away when we could take them to charity shops; we don’t mend clothes, we get rid of them.

We use more electricity than we need to; we leave electrical devices switched on or left on standby overnight; we use a lot of electrical devices everyday.

We buy more food than we need so more is produced, wasted and thrown away.

We don’t make the most of our opportunities and education; we spend time wanting to be somewhere else, not being the best we could be; we don’t consider how we can improve the lives of others.

How Can We Make a Difference?• Consider how you can limit your waste.

• Try to use resources that are sourced or made responsibly such as Fairtrade resources.

• Talk to other people and share ideas about how we can all stop overusing or wasting the earth’s resources.

• Write about the issues; design posters that explain and highlight the problems.

• Stand up for people who are ignored and being treated unfairly.

• Start looking into charities which are concerned with these issues and find out how you can get involved.

• Make the most of the opportunities that you are given.

What Will You Change?Think about what we have discussed.

How could you affect the world?

Can you begin to improve poverty by changing something you currently do?

Many charities work in LEDCs (less economically developed countries) in order to help reduce the effects of poverty. Some work for little or no money by doing voluntary service, especially if working overseas or for smaller charities in Britain.

Each of the major religions has charities specifically set up to enable believers to respond to need. Two of these specifically religious charities are Christian Aid and Islamic Relief.

‘We believe in life before death’.
