TRANSCRIPT

  • Vol. 19 No. 1 October - December 2012

  • It is a matter of pride for all L&T-ites to learn that the Harvard Business Review, one of the most respected business journals in the world, has ranked Mr. A.M. Naik, the 4th Best Performing CEO in the world in the industrial sector, and the 32nd across all categories. The global study was comprehensive - covering 3143 CEOs from 1862 companies representing 64 nationalities and from companies based in 37 countries. Truly a global honour - a wonderful way to end the year, and inspiration to face the challenges ahead.

The success of a leader creates positive ripples across the organization. Our Corporate HR-Learning & Development (CHR-L&D) seeks to bring such successes to light. The Success Story Writing Competition rewards achievements and also motivates others to achieve more. Fifty stories won prizes, and these will be compiled into a book (Page 3).

Another recent major event was the Computer Aided Design Fest 2012 to find the best CADxPERT in L&T. A large number of CAD professionals from 10 locations participated, and the grand finale was held at Powai on September 15th (Page 11).

Books are always popular. The Book Exhibition organized by CHR-L&D at Powai Campus saw a large number of L&T-ites picking up heaps of books. Many also participated in other events: video films on management lessons, speed reading, jigsaw puzzles, a treasure hunt and a word search game.

Larsen & Toubro Public Charitable Trust has started Science on Wheels projects at Coimbatore and Baroda. A state-of-the-art mobile lab will visit schools and allow students to carry out hands-on experiments linked to the school syllabus. It will enrich their understanding of applied sciences. This noble initiative of the Trust will benefit a large number of underprivileged students who do not otherwise have access to such facilities.

We are pleased to inform you that L&Ts Brand Management & Communications team came out on top at the 52nd annual competition conducted by the Association of Business Communicators of India (ABCI). We won the highest number of awards, as well as the Champion of Champions trophy. In addition, ABCI conferred upon me the Communicator of the Year Award for 2011 for results achieved in effectively projecting Brand L&T. This award is a measure of the commitment of my team and colleagues companywide whose contributions helped us strengthen our brand, and of the management freedom to explore, innovate and deliver the best.

    Vol. 19 No. 1 October - December 2012

  • L&Ts DNA is based on the ac-tivities of young people who are highly motivated to do a great job and leave an imprint and legacy for those who come after them, said Mr. K. Venkataramanan, L&Ts Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, and Chief Guest for the ceremony at Powai to felic-itate the winners of Success Story Writ-ing Competition 2011-2012.

Such competitions keep the momentum going. Knowledge is like an iceberg. You yourself dont know how much you know until you use it

innovatively. Im very happy to be here and see that L&Ts DNA is still intact. The biggest developments in Defence will come through such efforts. Im also happy to see multiple patents in L&T. As someone said: Just get up and go and take L&T to greater heights, KV concluded.

Earlier, Ms. Sunaina Saldanha welcomed the guests and participants and ably compered the program.

Mr. Neville Lobo, VP - Corporate HR and Director - LDA, Lonavla, noted that L&T had been a very successful company, going strong even after 75 years. Few

companies live that long. 75% of the 10 top Fortune 500 companies dont last even 45 years. To sustain success over such a long period takes people of mettle.

Looking at the success stories of L&T-ites we decided to motivate them by holding this competition and when we have 50 prize-winning stories we will compile them into a book. Every year, the stories get better, and more ICs are involved. In addition to the three prizes, we are awarding each participating IC a prize as well, he revealed.

Mr. Yogi Sriram, Senior Vice President,

    Success Stories Competition

A moment of pride - the winning team from Heavy Engineering poses with Mr. K. Venkataramanan.

L&Ts DNA is based on innovations by young people: CEO & MD

The success of L&T is the sigma of many successes - the small steps taken by individuals and teams that lead up to giant leaps. Each of them - no matter how small - is significant. Each of them is that one brick without which the edifice would not be complete.

Our Success Story Competition turns the spotlight every year on innovative initiatives of young minds, which as our CEO aptly says, constitute the DNA of our organization.

    The L&T-ite, October-December 2012 3

  • Keynote address by Mr. K. Venkataramanan.

Mr. Yogi Sriram addresses the gathering.

Corporate HR, and Guest of Honour, said that many times one has to face continuous failures before persistent effort is rewarded with success. He gave the example of the Wright Brothers, the Beatles and Walt Disney (who failed 332 times before succeeding) as examples of persistence.

He said it was not enough to just innovate. You must know how to present your success story in an appealing way, taking the example of Charles Dickens who used a double adjective in every sentence and Tolkiens Hobbit to illustrate his point. Success stories, if shared, will make for a huge learning. This is a fantastic initiative which will ensure that your creative abilities increase and infect those around you, he stated.

The top 3 winning teams then made presentations on their success stories and kept the audience enthralled. All the winning teams as well as the top rated success stories from each IC were then awarded certificates, which was presented to them by Mr. Venkataramanan.

    Congratulations!

First PrizeHeavy Engineering IC (HE IC) bagged the first prize in the Success Story Writing Competition-2011-2012 for their success story on Development of Underwater arrester system for a weapons system in a submarine. The weapon system had to be fired in a test facility. It could be done only by arresting the weapon after it was fired inside the test facility within 4-5 metres, safely and without damage. This was done with the help of a water twister and a net that would absorb the drag soon after it was fired. The presentation made by the team incorporated a riveting video that showed the weapon being arrested inside the lab without damage.

Besides these three front-runners, seven more participants received awards and consolation prizes.

Second Prize MIP IC team received the second prize for fugitive emission qualification for valves. All valves emit ultra-low quantities of gases in installations, and this has become a global concern. The team devised a Mr. Neville Lobo, in his address, explains the rationale behind the competition.

testing system that gauged the lowest emissions in valves and demonstrated that AIL valves qualified, in a test facility in France where no valves had been earlier qualified. MIP IC is now seeking a patent for the testing system.

Third PrizeThe third prize in the Success Story Writing Competition went to the Heavy Engineering IC for the success story on First-time aluminium hull manufacture for boats at L&T HZMC. The hull was for the high-speed interceptor boats. L&T received an order for 36 such boats. The client was so happy with the progress made, that it awarded L&T an additional order for 18 such boats even before the first of the 36 boats were delivered. The hull was fabricated in an inverted position and then turned by a specially designed fixture which is now being patented.

The Harvard Business Review in its January-February 2013 edition has named L&Ts Executive Chairman, Mr. A.M. Naik, as the 32nd Best Performing CEO in the world. In the industrial sector Mr. Naik is ranked 4th Globally.

The Harvard Business Review (HBR) is one of the most respected business journals in the world.

Mr. Naik has been ranked in a global study of 3143 CEOs from 1862 companies

representing 64 nationalities and from companies based in 37 countries.

Former Apple Chief, Steve Jobs, who passed away last year, has topped the list followed by Jeff Bezos of Amazon.com in No. 2 spot and Yun Jong-Yong of Samsung Electronics in the third place.

The evaluation criteria included how much shareholder returns had changed over their tenure and the overall increase in market capitalization.

Five years ago HBR launched a global project to implement a scorecard that would not only get people talking about long-term performance but also alter the way that boards, executives, consultants, and management scholars thought about and assessed CEOs. HBR wanted to recognise the CEOs worldwide who had created long-term value for their companies, and to give executives around the world critical benchmarks they could aim for.

Design is all about making things convenient & faster with an emphasis on UsabilityManufacturability Constructability. All this should be made possible without distancing from the human touch.

    -- M.V. Kotwal

I compliment the organizers for their efforts in increasing numbers of participants three-fold. They should continue with this event that has brought in a lot of excitement in the organisation. The organisers should now make an attempt to: 1) Increase women employees participation from 8% to 20%.2) Make the winners of this event core committee members for next year to bring in fresh and innovative ideas.3) Expose winners to national and international events.

    -- R.N. Mukhija

CAD is an excellent career choice & CAD FEST is a good learning exercise. The participants should ensure designs that are reliable and efficient, pay attention to details, and avoid repetitive projects.

  • The L&T-ite, October-December 2012 15

The ceremony started with the L&T Anthem and a welcome address by Mr. Rohan Athalye, CHR-L&D.Mr. Narendra Bellare (Joint General

Manager, CHR-L&D) was called upon to set the context for the exhibition. In his introductory remarks, he said that the Learning & Development vision incorporated the immense importance of continuous learning. One of the most powerful ways to do that is through reading. We started with a library at Powai and later with a huge library at

the Leadership Development Academy to create a habit of regular reading amongst L&T-ites. Today 21 publishers and over 10000 knowledge resources are being featured for the next two days at discounted prices. We request you to buy, read and recommend books for the library. He added that nothing would truly be able to replace the value that a beautifully packaged new book can bring to you.

Mr. Yogi Sriram (Senior Vice President, Corporate HR), in his inaugural address,

advised L&T-ites to develop the habit of reading to keep up-to-date with what is going on in their profession and in the world. He shared that the idea of someone being called a bookworm is gradually losing its negative connotation and in fact, reading is a virtue to have in todays intensely competitive world where knowledge is an asset. He also shared that the plethora of options available through electronic media and social networks are bringing down the attention span and special efforts should be made to retain

Mr. Yogi Sriram declares open the 4th Annual Book Exhibition.

4th Annual Book Exhibition: Books & More

Books are great company to keep and often the truest friends of man. L&T-ites have been no exceptions to the rule and the success of the book exhibitions that have been organised since 2009 speak for themselves.

Keeping this in mind, Corporate HR-Learning & Development (CHR-L&D) organised the 4th Annual Book Exhibition at Powai, North Block II Campus on Nov 8 & 9, 2012.

  • 16 The L&T-ite, October-December 2012

Mr. Narendra Bellare takes an avid audience into the wonder world of books.

the habit of reading. He also emphasized that with changing

times, the way people read has changed. He spoke of books and immense knowledge, now available entirely in the electronic medium and urged people to take total benefit of such resources. Times are changing but books are returning in various forms despite all the competition, he affirmed and recommended some books like Frontiers of Excellence by Robert Waterman, The Spirit Level by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett, Its What You Learn After You Know It All That Counts by John Wooden.

He concluded by saying: This Diwali, light a candle in your mind, and read a book.

Over 1200 books were selected for the libraries, not to mention the many books L&T-ites personally bought at highly discounted rates.

Right through the exhibition, video clips were shown of senior L&T-ites asserting their love of reading, experiences with books and their recommendations. They included K. Venkataramanan, Yogi Sriram, M.S. Krishnamoorthy, U.

Dasgupta, Ashwini Kumar, Anil Parab, and Anantha Sayana.

What made the 4th exhibition special were the events that were planned in and around it simultaneously. They added a certain spice and aliveness to the entire exhibition:

    * Videos of management films showcased: The video discussions were facilitated by the Corporate HR Learning & Development team.

The movies were: The Power of Vision; Theme: Power of

having a Positive Vision of the future. The renowned futurist, Joel Barker beautifully enumerates through examples and the experiences of 3 great researchers on the potent & influential power of having a positive vision of the future. This concept can be applied to individuals, companies and nations alike Learn how just having a positive vision of the future can have a direct impact on your success

SonRise A Miracle of Love; Theme: Resilience Courage and Perseverance. A young couple is overjoyed when they find out that, after having had two girls, the wife is pregnant again, and this time it will

be a son. However, the boy turns out to autistic. Unhappy with the diagnoses and treatments available, they decide to work out their own therapy program for their son. Their son through their resilience and courage went on to earn his masters from Brown University.

The Unorganized Manager; Theme: Demonstrates the keys of good management through the story of an unorganized manager. In the imaginative style that only John Cleese can bring, management lessons are brought to life in this video. The importance of being well organized is brought home, which features a manager who discovers that his disorganisation is affecting the people around him and his health. John Cleese (as St. Peter) takes him on a journey that shows him his management mistakes, and how to fix them; his efficiency at work improved, as well as his life at home.

The Goal; Theme: Inspiring story of a shop floor manager at Unico who converted his division into a profit-making one using simple principles from the Theory of Constraints. Shares the inspiring story of Alex Rogo, who uses

  • the principles of the Theory of Constraints like bottlenecks, throughput, and flow balancing to transform his mediocre division into a money-making machine. The movie brilliantly explains with day to day examples the concepts that boost performance in productivity.

    * A workshop on speed reading for which over 100 L&T-ites signed up and the faculty, Mr. Ashish Jha, former journalist and presently a trainer who increased his own effective reading speed from 100 words per minute to 2500 provided tools for the participants to do likewise, after testing their initial reading speed linked with comprehension;

    * Jigsaw Puzzles which were covers of some of the publishers best seller books, which the teams had to put together;

    * Treasure Hunt, all designed to enhance the love of reading. The winners of the Jigsaw Puzzle and Treasure Hunt competition, were given gift vouchers. The gift vouchers enabled L&T-ites to buy books in the exhibition for free.

    * Word Search was another game that was put up in the Lobby area and inside the Multi-purpose room, which drew an

enthusiastic crowd. Names of well-known authors and books were included as part of this activity.

The exhibition was a great way of inviting L&T-ites across Mumbai into the enriching and enticing world of books.

Going by the number of books procured, the number of footfalls for the various events held and the feedback people shared post it, the exhibition certainly was a mammoth success.

Mr. Anantha Sayana, Vice President and Head - Corporate IT, L&T, launched L&Ts all-India video server with streaming facility at Powai on November 8, 2012. The event was watched simultaneously at Chennai and Vadodara.

Mr. Neville Lobo, VP - Corporate HR and Director - LDA, Lonavla, explained the purpose of setting up the facility. When we were carrying out management programmes at MDC, we started sourcing films, documentaries and feature films that could be used in management education. If we buy these films separately for each business division, it works out very expensive. We were looking for a system to make the films available for training throughout the company. We wondered on how we can ensure that people get full benefit of the films. So we went to Mr. Anantha Sayana to solve our problem. He and his team started working and after a lot of hard work by the IT experts, we achieved the impossible

simultaneously at several locations. The system is easy to use. Further, a user manual is provided for self-navigation, he explained.

After questions and answers from participants at the launch at all the locations, a short documentary: The Spirit of the Dolphin, was screened. It showed how dolphins are natural teachers and learners and how we can emulate them.

After comments from the participants, the video film, Who Moved my Cheese, was screened. This film is about changing the way we look at change.

In his vote of thanks, Mr. Narendra Bellare thanked all those who had helped in making this project a huge success.

You may contact Ms. Shilpa Gandhare Malhotra at (shilpa.gandhare@ larsentoubro.com), from Corporate HR Learning and Development, for further information. Mr. Neville Lobo sets the context for the event.

What is meant by streaming media?

Streaming media is video and/or audio data transmitted over a computer network for immediate playback rather than for file download and later (offline) playback. Examples of streaming video and audio include Internet radio and television broadcasts, and webinairs.

This means that the audience doesnt have to wait for the entire clip to download. The video clip or the audio input starts to play as soon as enough data has been downloaded.

High bandwidth network connections are generally needed to work with streaming media. Specific bandwidth requirements depend on the type of content. For example, watching high resolution streaming video requires much more bandwidth than watching low resolution video or listening to music streams.

True streaming actually means that the data is played, then discarded immediately after it is played. Hence, no local copy of the file is stored. True streaming video must be delivered from a specialised streaming server. This involves higher cost.

There is also a hybrid method known as progressive download. This simulates true streaming, but doesnt have all the advantages. But it is inexpensive service.

Progressive download is the most widely used video delivery method by far (because it is what YouTube uses). Its also easiest to implement: just put a video on your webserver and point your player to the URL. Once a user

hits play, the player immediately starts downloading the file.

The player will start video playback as soon as it has enough data to do so, and it will continue to download until it has received the whole file.
