Dog Blog This week Kenny went to Forest School with year

1. Sadly, she had to do some litter picking as there

is so much rubbish dropped in the park. She asks

that everyone in the Lady Margaret community

stops dropping litter. Think about our school theme

of Morality. Is it right to drop rubbish which spoils

the green space for others? Why should other

people have to pick it up? What about wildlife?

There are beautiful swans on the canal. If they eat

some of the rubbish that is dumped it could kill

them.

We received this lovely letter…

Perhaps pupils can consider where they would like the bulbs to be planted. Also thinking of our themes of ‘Morality’ and ‘Sustainability’ consider why fair trade is important. You will be asked about this in assembly on Monday.

I am writing to a slightly unusual request in my brother James' will. He taught at Lady Margaret Middle School in Southall in the 1970's at the end of his teacher training. I am approaching you as the original school has closed and I believe that Lady Margaret Primary School Ealing is the successor school. James made two requests for each of the schools that he worked at, and these reflect his sense of humour and his humanity.

The first request is that we donate “one large (maximum size) jar of fair trade coffee for the staff room in recognition of the professional help received from colleagues”.

Coffee was clearly important to him, as was the help and advice of colleagues.

Fair trade was important to James, and in later years he was part of a diocesan team who took educational materials to associated dioceses in Africa.

A good hit of caffeine and friendly advice would have been very helpful to a young teacher back then, as I am sure it still is today.

The second request is that we supply “one 25kg sack of mixed daffodil bulbs to beautify the grounds of the school.” I feel that this is the more significant of his requests:

We will arrange to send Cornish daffodils because of James' connections with Cornwall.

An expanse of flowering daffodils provides a welcome harbinger of hope each year, often when the winter seems to have dragged on interminably.

I am sure that he would like to think that this gesture has the possibility of lifting the spirits of colleagues and students at what is often a difficult time of year.

Whilst it was clearly my brother's intention that the bulbs should be planted 'to beautify the school grounds', we are happy to leave the precise use to which the bulbs are put to the school's discretion.

These very modest gifts are, perhaps, an expression of a much greater significance, and recognise the enormous value that teaching profession has in shaping the lives of future generations. I am not sure how appropriate his request is that the bulbs beautify the school grounds in an urban school, but perhaps you can turn them to educational use or as a fundraising activity if you planting them is not possible. Our family would be honoured if you feel able to accept them.

With thanks

Laurie York Moore

Basketball Game Last week, the year 5 and year 6 basketball team went to Stanhope Primary School to compete

in a fun, friendly match. It was interesting and fun to see what the other team could do as we

learnt different things from each other. With the totals added up at the end, Lady Margaret

Primary School won 21 - 7 points! We all a had great time playing with other talented, young

basketball players and would love to play more games in the future.

Attendance

Last week, fifteen classes’ attendance were below the target set by the Local Authority of 96.4%. Attendance is monitored closely by the school and if your child's attendance falls below 90% and they miss more than three days in any half term for whatever reason, you will be sent a letter and you may be invited to meet with the head teacher. Children with attendance of less than 90% are judged nationally as being a persistent absentee. Over a whole year 90% equals 19 days and almost one month of learning lost. I f your child becomes a persistent absentee your child ’s attendance will be monitored by Ealing Council’s attendance officer.
