Petits Poussins has been going from strength to strength for 8years now teaching foreign languages to mums and toddlergroups, nurseries, schools, private tuition and adults. We havewritten and developed our own unique and dynamic curriculumand teach around 650 children per week. Our teachingtechniques are different from what you would usually expectfrom a language class and we always adhere to our companymotto of ‘Making Languages Fun!’

In 2004, Petits Poussins was born out of a passion by itsfounder, Gill Nemri, to pass on her gift of bilingualism to asmany people as possible. Gill wanted to create languagelearning experiences where parents, nurseries and schoolscould learn French in a fun, friendly and relaxed atmospherewith their little ones. They also offer private tuition to all agesincluding adults and train teachers and provide languageresource advice.

So what are our FAQ's?

What makes Petits Poussins unique?

Each child gets individual attention, ensuring that they arealways making progress in their language development. We usetotal immersion language teaching style and all of our teachersare bilingual. Through the use of our specially developedteaching techniques, songs, games, visual aids and much morewe make the language learning experience as fun andstimulating as possible.

How soon should I bring my child along to one of yourclasses?

This is a very common question. It's best to learn otherlanguages from as early an age as possible. It is amisconception to assume that if your child hasn’t fullydeveloped its mother tongue then it will be confused or delayedin picking up a second language. A child is born with the innateability to pick up multiple languages at once, not just one ortwo. Researchers believe that it's not until around the age of 7that the brain changes and that innate ability changes.

Our child is bilingual, will learning a third language confusethem?

Absolutely not. Children’s brains are hard-wired to pick upmultiple languages. Some children are following both ourFrench and Italian curriculums and picking up all the languageswith no confusion. We always say children are like sponges andwe believe there is no limit to their learning.

If you would like to ask any further questions to the team atPetits Poussins, reserve your free taster in a class or see theteaching packages that we provide to nurseries and schools, please do not hesitate to contact us, we are always happy tohelp.

We are always interested in receiving CV’s and are recruitingright now so please get in touch if you are fluent in more thanone language, passionate about giving your gift and areinterested in joining our team.

L’MamitaINTERVIEW

IT’S PRIME TIME ATWONDERLEARN

18 Spring 2014 www.lmamita.co.uk

What are the Prime Areas of Learning?

It is widely agreed by researchers, teachers and parents thatpersonal, social and emotional development, communicationand language and physical development are closely linked toeach other and are central to all other areas of learning. Theseare called the Prime Areas.

Why are they important to Child

Development?

In the Early Years, the Prime Areas are inseparable from allexperiences. Stimulation is the key to brain development andthis is achieved through movement and play-basedexperiences. Babies and young children are naturally curiousabout their world and it is important to support them to beactive and interactive in their environment.

Tell us about Wonderlearn ...

I devised my Wonderlearn educational packs to support thePrime Areas; fun interactive themes to promote movement andactive learning. They are devised to engage all children in amultisensory way at the sessions.

For example, rhymes and action songs improve bodyawareness and the children love the Tickle Bird puppet songwith lots of tickling!

Lycra activities support physical development and hand eyecoordination as the children bounce the animals in the jungle orthe fish in the sea.

Bringing stories to life providing visual stimuli with puppetsand props, and tactile elements with dough disco – dancingeach finger in the playdough and not forgetting the mysteryobject hiding in the wonder box!

Words take on a greater significance if they are linked tomovement so with the Jungle theme, the children re-enact

moving through the jungle in different ways: marching slitheringsnapping and swinging to music.

New vocabulary is introduced in each theme and there arelinks with number and counting too. In fact there is a little bit ofeverything in each session linking to all areas of the curriculum

The essential ingredient is creating a fun environment thatignites the children’s interests and curiosity and supports themin their independent play.

What are the benefits of Wonderlearn for

the children and parents?

This is a lovely session for parents to interact with their childrenand join in the activities. The parents have an opportunity toplay, laugh and share the learning with their child. This is also animportant time for children to explore sharing, turn taking, listening skills and making new friends.

How can parents continue the benefits at

home?

Each theme has lots of ideas to stimulate the child’s imaginationand this can be continued at home. The important part isencouraging the child in their creative play in whatever form –drawing, painting, making dens singing new songs or makingplaydough together.

The important element is the shared experience andfollowing the child’s interests.

Sessions are running at Trinity Church in Gosforth onMondays (1.30-2.30pm) and there are new sessionsbeginning from April 28 at Ponteland Leisure Centre. The age group is 2-4 years and the cost is £5 per child(with a free first taster session and siblings half price). For more information contact Maria [email protected] or on 07717 848250.

Maria Ryder has worked in primary schools for over 20 years and has a passion for Early Years

learning. She is currently an Early Years’ Consultant for schools and nurseries delivering training and

giving support for all aspects of the curriculum. Maria has also started Wonderlearn, fun interactive

sessions for pre-school children to help develop Prime Areas of Learning. Here, she explains more …

L’MamitaEDUCATION

It has been debated in recent media, that children no longerhave an interest in reading for pleasure with particular focuson the lack of reading among young boys.

As the head of Juniors at Newcastle School for Boys(NSB), I feel very proud that we promote a very differentreading culture.

Our boys are at the centre of a vibrant, passionate andexciting reading community where reading for pleasure is atthe heart of their daily experience.

Each year we proudly celebrate World Book Day, hostregular book fairs and are lucky enough to have a variety ofauthors such as Jeremy Strong visit our school to discussand promote the importance of literature.

I believe that one of our greatest successes’ is our

understanding that reading for pleasure is an essential partof a happy childhood.

We encourage reading in every form, whether it is throughcomics, graphic novels and football magazines or via moretraditional forms of literature such as poetry and novels.

At NSB, we do not see it as our role to tell boys what theyshould be reading when reading for pleasure. As a result ofthis, I am always amazed by the range and variety of materialthat is being read and enjoyed by our junior boys.

From Huckleberry Finn to the Top Gear magazine, ourboys are consistently engaged, reading with interest anddeveloping their own opinions.

Our advice to any parent, who is looking to help nurturetheir child’s passion for reading, would be that any kind ofreading is good reading.

We find that enthusiasm, passion and a love for readingfrom a parent is simply infectious.

A love of reading can be instilled from the youngest ofages; therefore I would strongly disagree with recent mediacoverage that boys won’t read for pleasure.

Recently, one of our parents told me a lovely story abouthow one evening they had asked their son to go upstairs totidy the bookcase in his room. A very quiet hour later theywent upstairs to find the shelves still in a mess and their sonlying on his bed with his nose poked into a book. When Iasked the parent what they did next, I was delighted to hearthat they simply shut the door and let him get on with it.

It is this respect for boys and their reading that we valuemost at Newcastle School for Boys. Our reading standardsare excellent and many of our boys read well above nationalexpectations.

However, I believe one of our greatest achievements isthat so many of our junior boys read with love, joy andenthusiasm and this makes me incredibly proud as head ofJuniors at Newcastle School for Boys.
