When La Miradans Glen Cantrell, Raymond Fernandez, Morgan Hurley and Tony Aiello got together a few years ago to discuss a history book of La Mirada, they had no idea what was to come.

Once the word got out, many other La Miradans have joined in and have created a one-of-a-kind book that is now heading north of 100,000 words.

“It really is an epic book right now, but we keep adding to it every week”, said Tony Aiello one of the authors.

“This La Mirada Community Mem-

oirs sets a brand new standard in city history books where history will be presented factually and chronologically with the memories of our fellow neigh-bors who lived throughout the City”, said another author Glen Cantrell.

The book will contain six decades of cherished-and not so cherished memories-with no holds barred.

The authors request that Lamp-lighter readers send in stories about growing and living in La Mirada and be part of this one of a kind book to be published in 2013.

The deadline to submit your memo-ry is September 1st, 2012. Submit your

La Mirada Community Memoirs to be Published

George House at Neff Park

entries to: [email protected] Lamplighter will run an occa-

sional short excerpt from the book sent in by the authors to whet your appetite of things to come.

Neff Park -A Paradise

Neff Park was truly a kid's adven-ture paradise in the late 50's and early 60's. Chickens, forest-like trees, the main house and best of all, the care-taker's house. A sweet older lady lived there and she would sit and tell stories to us kids about the place. Even better, Neff Park was right next to Rancho School, which was right across the street from my house.

I don't recall us kids needing much in the early 60's. We all had a bicycle and some other toys of the days. It was all there and that kind of living looks better to me every day as an adult. We did fairly well, even without any wire-less communication devices. We all had one phone, usually in the kitchen of our home. The lucky kids had two phones in their house. All, of course were still on party lines. Two or three homes were hooked into one phone line. That seems scary nowadays.

The sounds of La Mirada are what I miss the most. The Santa Fe Trains roaring by Stage Road, and sometimes I can still smell Valley View Farms, it seems. Somehow, I do miss it all be-cause it was a part of Camelot named La Mirada.

Fe Springs City Councilman Joseph Ser-rano.

The project was championed, coor-dinated and funded by both city govern-ments, the California Department of Transportation, BNSF Railway, AMTRAK and US Department of Transportation.

La Mirada Mayor Gabe Garcia quipped that residents of both La Mirada and Santa Fe Springs“ will have a lot more time on their hands since they won’t be stopped every five minutes for a train to go by.”

The project is part of a $163 Million, 15-mile track extension that will go from Commerce in east Los Angeles over to Fullerton in Orange County.

“Santa Fe Springs is fortunate to be able to move forward with the Valley View Avenue grade separation project,” Serrano said. “This important project will not only facilitate better and safer traffic circulation, but will also help revitalize the local economy,” he said.

“This grade separation project repre-sents a significant transportation improve-ment for the cities of Santa Fe Springs and La Mirada,” said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty. “The project will also improve the movement of intercity passenger and freight rail.”

Instrumental in the coordination of the project is Don Jensen, Director of Public Works for Santa Fe Springs, and Steve Forster, Director of Public Works in La Mirada. Both Jensen and Forster were praised for their efforts during the

The 8U Silver team moved on to play Norco in the semi-championship game on Sunday, Father’s Day. The girls were pumped from their success in the tournament thus far and were ready to show their dads what they could do. Flores struck out 3 batters in the first inning giving our girls a strong start. The team followed this with a powerful of-fensive inning scoring 4 runs made by Flores, Liskey, Leon, and Shelby Robin-son. Norco came back and scored the first run of the tournament against LM in the bottom of the 2nd inning. This fueled de-termination in LM Silver team resulting in

ceremony.Once completed, three train tracks will

comprise the “Triple Track Project” and will be able to create potential for expand-ed passenger and commuter rail service through the Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Luis Obispo Rail Corridor.

Participating in the ceremony was Mi-chael Miles, Caltrans District 7 Director. Miles said that Caltrans will “continue to be here for the entire community and this project will help save lives since vehicles will never cross a track again here on Val-ley View.”

Miles also said that the project will also increase the ability of the rail corridor to accommodate planned increases in the volume of freight and passenger rail ser-vices. “As you can tell by the trains that are travelling behind me, more than 130 trains go pass Valley View Avenue every single day. This project will change lives, forever,” he said.

Perla Hernandez, Deputy District Di-rector for Congresswoman Grace Napoli-tano said that “in addition to improving safety and reducing noise, completion of the grade separation will improve local traffic circulation.”

Hernandez also pointed out that Cal-trans was recently awarded an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Grant from the Federal Railroad Administration that “fully funded this segment.”

Also participating were staff repre-sentatives from California State Senator Ronald Calderon and US Congresswoman Linda T. Sanchez. The project will be completed by Fall 2014.

Flores earning 2 RBIs and Sams driving in another RBI. The inning was highlighted with bases clearing triple by Robinson. 8U silver held Norco with Flores striking out

the first two batters and Craig ending the game with an awesome pop fly catch at 2nd base. The Final Score was 9-1 sending LMGSA 8U Silver into the champion-ships.

8U Silver battled against San-tee Sunday afternoon in the Champi-onship game. Despite the great effort the team showed defensively, they could not adjust to the pitcher and lost 7-0.

Overall, LMGSA 8U

Silver made their mark in the tournament and were complimented many times on their skills and determination. The team earned a second place trophy, which they proudly shared with their dads.

The 8U Silver girls and coaches pose with their 2nd place trophy. Congratulations girls!
