In fact, during the period 2006-2011, Statcan’s Federal Census pegged Lloydminster
as the 10th fastest growing City in Canada! Growth then was 2 .9% per year, but since
then we’ve realized growth at 5 .9% per year . Not only are we among the fastest
growing, but we are also among the youngest . Our average age is 31 .5 years old,
compared to 36 .5 for Alberta, 38 .2 for Saskatchewan and 40 .6 for Canada .
Lloydminster’s population growth also brought with it greater diversity in our
residents . While the Border City grew by 15 .7% during the period between 2006-2011,
its immigrant population grew 199 .3%! The economic activity and demand for
labour attracted people from around Canada and the World, but no more than
from the Philippines . The Philipino population in Lloydminster grew 2,263% over
those 5 years! Taglog is now the second most spoken language in Lloydminster!

Our region’s participation in the sector is about 2 .9 times more intensive than our
two provinces combined and nearly 12 times that of Canada as a whole! Another
sector that has emerged as a key employer and economic drive is retail trade .
Our market size and location has resulted in significant retail development
such that 14 .8% of Lloydminster employment is retail based compared to just
11% in Alberta and Saskatchewan and 11 .6% across Canada . On the flip side the
public administration and arts, entertainment and recreation sector are the most
underrepresented in Lloydminster, accounting for just 3 .3% of all employment,
or an industry intensity less than half of our two provinces and of Canada .
The largest occupation type held by our residents is that of the trades and
equipment operators . The strong oil, agriculture and construction activity has
ensured a large base of trained trades and equipment operators . In fact this group
accounts for 24 .5% of our residents’ occupations, with sales and service roles next
at 22 .2% and management roles at 17 .3% . The Lloydminster employment market
is very vibrant and dynamic . Our region of both Saskatchewan and Alberta is
estimated to have the lowest unemployment in our two provinces, whom in
turn lead the nation in employment . Our workforce participation rate is 79 .5%
compared to 73 .2% for Alberta, 69 .2% for Saskatchewan and 66% for Canada as a
whole . Clearly more of our people are participating and working in our economy
than in most communities in Canada .
As is the case in much of Alberta and Saskatchewan, the strongest sector in Lloydminster’s economy is energy .
