Sports Awards

The 5th annual Sports Awards evening went ahead at LLOB in July 2019 and this was another great success. More students than ever before were rewarded for a range of different achievements including leadership, voluntary work, Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 students of the year and specialist awards for students who represented the academy in different sports. The big award of the evening, the Grace Taylor Award for Sporting Excellence went to Ellen Proud for her accomplishments in gymnastics. A new award was added to the evening to highlight an individual or team of the year. Congratulations to the year 7 netball team on receiving this award for an outstanding year in the Gateshead Schools championships. Special mention to the LLOB academy gymnastics team who performed for staff, governors, award winners and guests at the halftime show. Their performance was truly spectacular! The department look forward to celebrating the achievements of our students this year in an event that we hope will be bigger and better than ever!

Sports Week

Sports week is a nationwide initiative implemented by schools across the UK in a bid to get more children active and having fun. LLOB took the challenge of sports week and went 10 fold with ideas and events. Every day we had tutor exercise challenges, hosted up to 4 sports clubs during lunch time, and had at least 2 sports clubs on after school. Staff and students around the academy made it a fantastic success, with participation being the highest the school has ever seen. Students were also able to wear their own football kits to PE during the week where we completed multiple charitable fun runs. We raised £231.78 for the Bradley Lowery Foundation! It was great to see so many individuals being excited and enthused by sport and exercise! We also ran a competition throughout the week to see which tutor came up with the best action photo of their fitness challenges. Miss Hancill’s tutor group won, winning a free tutor session in the sports hall!

Sports Day 2019

On Wednesday 10th July the PE department in partnership with Gateshead SSP hosted their

first inclusive sports day. All KS3/4 students took part in a broad spectrum of sports and

physical activities including athletics, obstacle relays and dodgeball. Both staff and students

thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work as part of a team to overcome the various

challenges. Whilst all house-blocks performed well it was Talbot who were crowned Sports

Day champions.

NEP SCITT

SCITT Programme

In September 2019, we welcomed SCITT student Sophie Whiting to Lord Lawson to carry out her teaching practice also known as PP1. The placement was over 6 weeks and Sophie excelled throughout her time here. It was a pleasure to mentor Sophie and I wish her the best of luck in her long term placement at Whickham school. I am sure she will finish the year with an outstanding grade. This term we welcome our second placement of students, Chris Binks and Caitlin Morrell. They will start their teaching practice in February. They will be mentored by Scott Earle and Kim Golby. I am sure both students will enjoy their time here at Lord Lawson, and we wish them both the best of luck. SCITT Literacy and Numeracy Conference

On the 9th January, Lord Lawson welcomed the NEP SCITT cohort to attend the annual Literacy and Numeracy Conference. The conference was led by Emily Halliday, Kim Golby and Catriona Veide. The purpose of the conference was to provide strategies and ideas on how to implement numeracy and literacy into a PE lesson. It was a very successful day with the trainee teachers being able to put into practice some of their ideas during a practical lesson with a selection of our Key Stage 3 students. All the students really loved the fitness lessons which incorporated both numeracy and literacy strands throughout.

Year 7 boys:

It has been a great start to the season for the year 7 football team. A squad of 14 players had been chosen from a group of 40 students who had tried out for the team early in September. The students have so far played two games and have shown some real promise and are looking like an exciting prospect for the future. Although the students had never played together previously in the same team you would never have guessed. In both games students performed exceptionally well both in attack and defence. Lord Lawson won their first game of the season against Kingsmeadow with a strong showing beating their opponents 5 - 0. In their second game they played out a very tight game against a strong Heworth team and lost the game 3 - 1. The score line certainly did not reflect the performance with the team changing regularly to find the best positions for students. A lot has been learned from the first two games and we have high hopes for the remainder of the season.

Year 8 boys: Last term the year 8 boys football team competed in 3 separate CVL evenings at both Lord Lawson and Kingsmeadow. Over these nights they have completed a total of 6 league fixtures. Currently they sit mid table with 2 wins, 1 draw and 3 defeats, with one more round of fixtures to go. Stand out performers so far have been goalkeeper William Gibson, who made a string of impressive saves including a penalty stop against Heworth Grange which secured LLOB a valuable point in a 2-2 draw. It is also worth mentioning the deadly shooting skills of Jeevan Somal which saw him score 5 goals in our last match, which was a 6-1 victory v Grace College. The team has made steady progress over the season so far and hopefully this can continue heading into our remaining fixtures.

Year 9 boys:

The Year9 football team have got off to a winning start by thrashing Whickham school 6-2. This fixture was a league and cup double header and we look forward to hosting Cardinal Hume in the next round and League fixtures will recommence after February half term.

I can’t quite believe the season of trampolining and gymnastics is already over! Lord Lawson have continued to show our incredible talent as we have taken part in the Gateshead Schools trampolining competition and the annual Gateshead trampolining and gymnastics festival. During the Gateshead School trampolining competition I beamed as the Year 7 and 8 debutants displayed elegant and creative self-made routines. Our year 10 veterans did us proud as always with Josh Smirk coming 3rd in his age category and qualifying for the next round! As always we wowed the crowd during our 2 performances at the Gateshead trampolining and gymnastics festival. Cheers were heard far and wide as we performed our ‘Don’t stop me now’ floor routine that was choreographed by our very own Niamh Carr, Ellie Laverick and Josh Smirk.

Year 7 Girls: This year, the standard of play in the year 7 girl’s football has taken me aback. Due to the incredible turn out at trials and the high level of performance on show, for the first time ever Lord Lawson have had to create two Year 7 teams! Team Phoenix and Team Fire have taken the Gateshead league by storm. Team Phoenix are yet to be defeated, with their top goal scorer Grace Collinson looking to be the next Ellen White. Team Fire have had a mixed season so far but their incredible weekly show of grit and determination is something to behold - they definitely live up to their team name! Well done girls - keep up the good work!

Year 11 boys: The year 11 footballers finished their season in a satisfactory fashion drawing games against Cardinal Hume Catholic School and Whickham School, two schools who have proved stern opposition in the past. Mr McConway would like to thank the students who have represented the academy over the last five years.

Year 8: During last term, the year 8 netball team took part in a CVL tournament at Kingsmeadow. After a rocky start losing their first game to Emmanuel, the girls came back stronger than ever winning their next 3 matches. Stand out performances coming from Amy Cosgrove in defence with fantastic interceptions, holding up centre court was Jagoda Klosowicz with her speed up and down the court, and finally Sophie Hogg’s shear skill and talent when shooting under pressure. All of the girls have been truly fantastic showing exceptional teamwork skills, being both gracious in defeat and success. I look forward to the next two rounds of CVL’s coming up over the next term, well done girls!

Year 10: Due to really poor weather, the year 10 team have only competed in one event which was the Gateshead Schools Netball tournament. This took place at Thorpe Academy on the 17th October. The students all played extremely well despite not having a full team. A special mention to our year 9 students; Grace and Eve Waterston and Isabella Caizley for stepping up and helping the year 10 team. The girls won 6 out of 8 games and came 3rd overall. Well done to all the girls. .

7 students qualified from the annual Gateshead Schools Indoor Rowing Championships to represent Gateshead in the County Finals in early February. Year 10 boys Alex Brown, Josh Strassheim, Liam Cooke and Finlay Perrie won their relay race and will compete as a foursome at county level. Year 9 Jake Davie will join three students from other Gateshead schools as part of the year 9 Gateshead team as will year 9 Mia Lowes. Jonny Cleugh (year 7) is following in his brother Matthew’s footsteps and reached this stage of the competition in style. Jonny broke an existing Gateshead School year 7 record that has stood for eight years. We wish all of these students the best of luck in the next round.

KS4 Girls: Before Christmas our KS4 girl’s rugby team were invited to a regional rugby event. The event was ran by the very prestigious Yorkshire Carnegie rugby club in Leeds! The girls partnered up with teams from Grace College, Cardinal Hume and Emmanuel to make an unstoppable and undisputed Gateshead team. The girls worked incredibly hard in the blistering conditions and certainly showed those Yorkshire folk what us North East girls are made of! Additionally the school have recruited the wonderful Orla McCallion (a former England rugby player) to coach on Thursday’s after school. Please come along and see what rugby is all about!

Year 7 boys: The team have made an excellent start to their rugby career’s at Lord Lawson demonstrating superb commitment to attending training in all weathers and fixtures. In the 1st half of the season the team have had mixed success in the tournaments they have taken part in having only been defeated on a number of occasions. Players who deserve special recognition for their performances include Evan Curry and Ben McClean. .

Year 8 boys: The year 8 team have built upon the great start they made last season participating in RFU cup and Gateshead School league competitions. Highlight of the season so far has been our convincing victory over Whickham in which Kevin Oloton turned in a Man of the Match performance. .

Year 9 boys:

The year 9 team have had a tough start to the season narrowly being defeated in our opening fixtures. However with a number of key players being unavailable through injury we expect to have a stronger 2nd half of the year. Andrew Watkin and Joe Curry have made significant contributions to the team already this season and deserve special recognition. .

On the 15th of November, a selection of students were selected to represent the Academy at this year's Cross Country event at Watergate Park. The event was a qualifier with the top 10 students from each event going on to compete at Barnard Castle on Saturday the 18th January 2020. We had a very successful day with 5 students coming in the top 5 of their respective age categories: Katie Francis: Year 10/11 Girls Champion Abigail Thwaites: Year 10/11 Girls 3rd Place Amy Drummond: Year 10/11 Girls 5th Place Jacob Schrouder: Year 7 boys Champion Ben McClean: Year 7 Boys 3rd place. We wish all the students the best of luck at Barnard Castle. I’m sure they will all do extremely well and look forward to updating you with their success. .

Year 9 and 10: Last term the Y9 boys and Y10 girl’s indoor athletics competition took place at Gateshead leisure centre with all students taking part in both track and field events. A special mention for Damien Suggett who managed to not only score the highest triple jump score of the day, but jumped so far, he cleared the mat altogether! Although the team did not secure themselves any medals, stand out performances came from Dylan Boddy, Jake Davie, Abigail Thwaites and Katie Francis who triumphed in their individual track events, and the girls winning the 8 lap parlauf with ease. Well done to all who attended.

Year 7 and 8: On Thursday the 28th November, a selection of year 7 and 8 girls represented the Academy at the Annual indoor Sports hall Athletics event at Gateshead Leisure Centre. All students competed in a variety of events in track and field events, including: the 2 lap Sprint, relay parlauf, speed bounce, standing long jump and vertical jump. All girls performed really well and its was great to witness the comradery between both teams. They encouraged and cheered each on throughout. They definitely demonstrated resilience in abundance. Although the girls just missed out on 3rd place, all team members expressed how much fun they had partaking in the event. Well done to all the girls. The year 7 boys also had taken part in the sports hall athletics competition throughout the morning with both teams performing strongly in a variety of events throughout the competition. The year 7 team included Aniq Mahmood, George Lavery, Ben McClean, Jacob Schrouder, Matthew Drummond and Zacharey Bell. The year 8 team included Jeevan Somal, Thomas Francis, Ryan Cosgrove, Kevin Oloton, Ewan Wilson, Martyn Rahmann and Alfie Pritchard. The year 7 boys gained a bronze medal coming in 3rd place. The year 8 team performed exceptionally well coming in 2nd place, winning the silver medal and qualifying for the county finals. Well done to all of the lads involved!

Year 7:

Another great tournament from the year 7 boys team in their first ever futsal event. The students included Aniq Mahmood, Ben McClean, Mackenzie Bell, Jacob Schrouder, Taylor Paxton, Archie Dunn, Imkan Kayira, Harry March and Harry Scott. The students started the competition strongly coming second in their group and qualifying for the knockout stages of the competition against Heworth Grange. There was only heartbreak in this semi-final game as Lord Lawson who were winning the game 4 - 3 conceded a last-minute goal to take the game to penalties. Unfortunately after a great save from the Heworth goalkeeper the Lord Lawson team were defeated on penalties and knocked out of the competition. It was another great performance from the lads who will no doubt benefit from this experience.

The annual Gateshead schools Badminton competition took place in late November at Gateshead Leisure Centre. Badminton is a sport which seems to be gaining in popularity within school and as a result of this we were able to enter 3 boys teams in the ks3 competition. For the first time the school has managed to secure the two qualification spots to represent Gateshead in the county finals in the new year. This is a great achievement and the following students should be very proud of their efforts; Sam Davidson, Jeevan Somal, Martyn Rahman, Ewan Wilson, Will Gibson, Michael Roxburgh, Daniel Robson and Lee Handyside.

Year 10: On the 21st November 2019 the Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy year 10 Futsal team performed tremendously well to come runners up in the FA Futsal tournament held at Heworth Grange. Each of the following students did themselves and the academy proud; James Farrow, Owen McCaughey, Joseph Armstrong, Harry Brown, Liam Cook, Josh Foster, Sam Porthouse and Cole Wilson. The named students demonstrated an exceptional standard of Futsal throughout the whole tournament which was vividly supported by a genuine team spirit. The player of the tournament (nominated by the students) was Owen McCaughey who made his debut in this tournament. Owen played in goal throughout the whole tournament and made a number of breath taking saves. Despite finishing runners up and the students being slightly deflated not to have won the tournament, I am confident that they realise how well they consistently performed and as well as how impressive it is to finish runners up out of so many schools and very good opposition. I would like to thank Mr. Vause from Heworth Grange for organising the tournament, the Sixth Form volunteers from Heworth Grange who kindly gave up their time to officiate the tournament and the eight Lord Lawson students named above for giving up their spare time and for all of their hard work shown in every game.

Year 8: The year 8 Futsal team was selected from a group of students that have shown superb dedication this year by attending Futsal club every Friday morning before school. They represented the academy in the Gateshead schools Futsal competition which was hosted by Heworth Grange in December. The team were drawn in a very strong qualifying group. They were defeated in their first two fixtures however managed to produce a fantastic battling performance in a 3-3 draw with Kingsmeadow. The player of the tournament for the team was Ewan Wilson, who showed fantastic trickery and a great eye for goal.

Year 9: The Year 9 Futsal team represented the academy well in the recent Gateshead finals. A tough draw meant that the boys just missed out on qualification to the final even though they comfortably beat the eventual winners. There were some superb individual performances and the students should be very proud of their efforts.

Year 11: The curse of the penalty shoot out! The Year 11 team did an amazing job and reached the Gateshead finals unbeaten. They met Heworth in the final whom they had already beaten in an earlier group stage. Lord Lawson dominated but a late equaliser by Heworth meant that the final went to penalties. Needless to say we came second. A great effort by the lads though who did the academy proud.

A2L Recognition This is where we celebrate classes or individual students who have demonstrated an

outstanding attitude to learning within PE!

Patrick Doyle 7y/PE3

I would like to formally recognise the great start to the year that Patrick has had in P.E. Patrick has been an absolute pleasure to teach and is a valued member of the class. Patrick

is always wanting to help and takes on any challenge with a smile on his face. His effort, determination and willingness to support other students in his class is fantastic. He is a credit to the academy and his house block. Well done Patrick keep up the good work.

Emily Meehan - Extracurricular participation Emily has been the star of the Lord Lawson PE department since starting in September. All

of the PE department have been impressed with her dedication to the extra curricular clubs. So far, she has represented the school in Trampolining, Football and soon to be

netball (once they get some fixtures!). She turns up to training every week with the passion and will to improve, it is a true joy to see! Keep it up Emily.

Kyle Holden 8y/PE3 Kyle has a fantastic attitude in PE which ensures that no matter what the activity he always puts in 100% effort. Kyle should be proud of how hard he works and is a valued member of

the class. He deserves recognition not only for the progress he has made but also for the positive impact he has on his peers.

Jack Hogg - Cambridge National Sport Science

I have been consistently impressed with Jack and his new level of maturity since entering Year 11. Jack has shown how hardworking and diligent he is when completing his

Kayla Huscroft 8X/PE5

Since the beginning of the year I have been continually impressed with Kayla within core lessons. Her work ethic, dedication and attitude towards all lessons has been outstanding. She has given her all during lessons, regardless of the activity, and always has a smile on

her face! Kayla is a student who shows a great amount of commitment in all lessons and is a role model to her fellow students. She has shown great teamwork skills in both handball

and hockey and is a pleasure to teach. Keep it up Kayla, well done!

Jasmine Melton 9Y/PE6 It has been an absolute pleasure teaching Jasmine this term. Her enthusiasm in her fitness

lessons has been outstanding. She is an excellent role model for her peers and is often asking for extra challenges so she can really push herself out of her comfort zone. When working in pairs she is great at encouraging and providing support and advice on how to

partake in each exercise by reinforcing the correct technique. I look forward to seeing Jasmine progress even further this next half term. Well done Jasmine.

Leon Anthony 9X/PE2

Since his return to core PE lessons in year 9, Leon has shown a tremendous work ethic and determination to improve in everything that he works on. In particular, Leon has been a

stand out performer in Rugby. Although a number of these lessons were carried out in poor weather conditions, Leon never once complained and always gave his all in both skill drills and competitive matches. On a number of occasions, he acted as a real positive role model

for his teammates providing them with encouragement and advice on positional play within games.
