“It was a very challenging semester due to COVID. Classes were moved to Zoom and we lost many great opportunities to network with the professors and other classmates. However, I also received a lot of help from the university. The technology team consistently provided the best supporting services. Most of the cases and reference materials were still accessible on e-database. Even the online exams were held for social distancing. It was difficult but also memorable. Fortunately I still have one more year at CUHK - hopefully everything will be back to the normal soon.”

“Studying IEL in CUHK LAW is interesting and rewarding, both academically and practically. When studying law, I bear two things in mind: Look beyond law when looking at law; look at the future in the eyes of history. Law never stops and neither do I.”

CEN LinLLM in International Economic Law

“On knowing my personal development needs, I choose CUHK LAW to link my interest to study in which this Programme is dedicated to enlightening me on energy security and sustainability, particularly in Hong Kong, from a legal perspective. Nonetheless, it is really challenging to balance work, study and life, especially in times of COVID-19. As such, planning ahead and setting study goals are key to success for which it can boost up my motivation and keep me on the right track. Not to mention, professors are all supportive who inspire me a lot in the course of my study.”

“I spend more than ten hours studying every day.1) Before class: complete the reading and exercises assigned by the professor, and browse the slides for preview;2) In class: listen to the lecture carefully, mark the key points while recording, and ask the teacher immediately if I encounter a problem;3) After class: Before the final stage, I will collate notes with slides, mark the key cases and legal provisions. At the final review stage, I will combine the practice questions and previous year’s examination questions to carry out two to three rounds of notes collation, and finally focus on review.”

“Studying in the LLM in International Economic Law Programme in CUHK was an important and absolutely right decision for me, which advanced my career as a lawyer handling foreign-related matters in mainland China. All of the professors were very nice and highly-qualified, who were always willing and patient to answer questions, helping me to understand the legal knowledge better. Meanwhile, the courses were so practical that they highly improved my critical thinking and my legal writing skill, enhancing me more professional in cross-border transaction. In a word, I felt lucky and glad to study in CUHK.”

“It was an unusual year of pandemic that we attended most of our lessons on Zoom. I felt difficult to cope with loneliness being an extrovert myself. However, this pandemic has given me the free time to rest and not to “think”. I did not burn the midnight oil to study. On the contrary, I spent more time allowing my mind and my body to rest, and this perhaps led to a clearer mindset to comprehend the things I learned during the semester. Having the extra time to appreciate knowledge, I truly find the courses interesting.”

“I have enjoyed my journey at CUHK LAW. The faculty members are highly qualified and inspiring, and the Faculty has been extremely supportive during the pandemic. The learning experience has been rewarding and enriched further by a cohort of intelligent and friendly classmates.”

“The COVID-19 pandemic has quickly transformed our world, including our learning modes and ways to interact with our teachers and classmates intellectually. CUHK LAW has provided various support to us, to tide us over the countless challenges amidst the new normal, with her flexible use of technology and willingness to make special arrangements with due regard to our actual needs. Without the painstaking efforts of the teachers and admin team, pursuing this demanding yet rewarding degree amidst the pandemic would be unmanageable.”

“The time for the LLM study is short but it’s fruitful.Professors are very knowledgeable, most of them have rich experience in legal practice, and I do learn a lot from them. It’s a pity that we can’t meet face-to-face, but professors have always been trying to make the most of what we have to ensure we can interact with each other as much as what we could have done in a F-2-F class. What I like the most is that we don't have to be shy to share our ideas, as there is no right or wrong answer.”

“The JD Programme at CUHK is not only a unique learning experience which has enriched my legal knowledge but it is also a true test of rigour, discipline and dedication. As a Part-time student I had to juggle my work commitments with the lectures, the self-readings, the tutorials. This balancing act, when adroitly conducted, brings a priceless sense of achievement that I find myself the honour to share with my fellow scholarship recipients. This testimonial would not be complete without a well-deserved praise to all my professors whose passion for the law encouraged me to push myself.”

“I am truly honoured and humbled to graduate with the JD Gold Scholarship. CUHK LAW has given me an exceptional two years of unique opportunities, new friends and a paramount of fun.I was initially apprehensive about the change of pace from life as a medical doctor to a Full-time law student, but CUHK has gone above and beyond to make me feel at home. From the legal knowledge acquired that would benefit my career goals, to the amazing friends and professors I have had the chance to learn from-I am very glad I embarked on my legal journey here.”

“Since I was young, I have always wanted to study law. I am very proud of myself in taking up the JD studies. While being a Part-time law student is demanding, the Faculty offers great support and allows a large degree of flexibility on curriculum planning. I enjoy every bit of my study experience so far. Not only does legal studies highly complement with my finance background, it also allows me to gain new perspectives in complex business situations. I am truly grateful for meeting and learning from all the great minds who share the same passion and vision in life.”

“I have never thought of being one of the recipients, amid the keen competitions among many other students. I have completed my undergraduate degree in CUHK and this is one of the reasons why I would pursue the master's study at CUHK. The professors and teachers of CUHK are top-class scholars and therefore I could really be inspired by their lessons. The knowledge in LCL is very pragmatic and I found it readily applicable in daily life, albeit I am not working in a law firm. To conclude, I must thank all the professors I have encountered so far.”

“Reading Law at CUHK is one of the best decisions I have ever made. It has been a demanding yet intellectually stimulating experience. Despite the fact that most of the classes are conducted online, I am impressed by the passionate teaching staff who always engage us with in-depth discussions and are readily available to support us. The all-rounded career support also helped me in getting myself ready for the job market. Anyhow, you will not regret joining CUHK LAW where you will meet brilliant professors and classmates who will become your friends for life.”

“The JD Programme is intellectually stimulating, thanks to the quality of the lecturers and the diverse background of students which provided me with different perspectives. The Programme is also designed to be interactive and therefore everyone has a chance to participate and contribute to the class. The Programme is therefore very effective in equipping students with essential lawyering skills to flourish in the challenging legal industry.CUHK LAW also provides me with ample career support, such as the one-on-one careers consultation, which has greatly assisted my career planning and job application.”

“Switching from a humanities background to law is not easy, but I suppose anyone who got into the JD Programme felt the same. So, I remind myself every day that going to law school is just like overcoming a cultural shock: we are constantly learning, adapting, and second guessing about ourselves. But at the end of the day, there is only one way to overcome a cultural shock: prepare and plan for your success. And I would not have made it through the first semester without the warm support from my fellow colleagues and professors. I am very grateful.”

“It is never easy to pick up books again after joining the work industry for a few years. The CUHK JD Programme is very intense yet rewarding. Under the pandemic situation, it is challenging to enhance an interactive teaching and learning experience online. The experienced faculty members took the opportunity to engage with us way before the semester started and sought ways to adjust their teaching modes to make the tutorials more fruitful. Besides, studying with a group of bright students motivates me to strive for improvements.”

“I’m honoured to receive the JD Scholarship awarded by CUHK LAW.It has been a long while since my first degree. Being a seasoned professional, I have almost forgotten the life as a student. Law is definitely a challenging topic. Going back to school was not an easy decision, with adjustments needed to balance work and family life.Technology had helped to bridge the gap in ‘learning with social-distancing’, despite the reduced opportunity to meet, in-person, my young(er) and bright classmates.I wish to thank my professors for their fun and enlightening classes.”

“CUHK LLM Programme in Energy and Environmental Law is a master of laws degree like no other. One important learning objective is to understand the existing legal frameworks of climate law and investment law, and how their respective legal principles complement with each other to create synergies for the better implementation of climate change mitigation and adaption policies. My sincere gratitude to the law professors spending their valuable time to teach legal analysis skills, promptly answering students' questions online and offline, making extra efforts to prepare poll questions, arranging Zoom meetings to address students' concerns on assignment submission.”

“Trained as a medical professional it has not been easy to step into a different discipline of study. Doing a part-time is another challenge, for most of us I believe, as the workload has never been light. However, I eventually noticed that all the hard work have not only brought me academic excellence, but also a new perspective seeing the law being more than legal principles and statutes - law is really about logical thinking and reasonings. Being able to appreciate such will surely benefit your work and other areas of life (and also make your study less dull).”

“The JD Programme was a demanding but rewarding experience. Despite having to attend classes through Zoom instead of face-to-face for most of the Programme, the professors at CUHK were highly engaging and helped us make the most out of our learning experience. The Programme also offered a diverse range of electives for us to choose from. Not only are we equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills for the legal profession, but we were also introduced to the ethical and moral concerns revolving around the law that has stimulated many intellectual discussions between classmates coming from different disciplines.”

“Studying at CUHK LAW is both academic and practical. The most important thing for me during my study is the construction of legal thinking, which is very challenging but exciting. The combination of inquiring and brainstorming not only allows me to learn basic legal knowledge, but also improves my ability to think independently. My experience at CUHK LAW gives me confidence and strength in the future career development. I am honored to have met a group of mentors here.”

“I am deeply honoured to have been awarded the LLM Scholarship by the Postgraduate Scholarship Committee. After many years in the Finance industry, I decided to pursue the LLM Programme as a personal learning challenge. I have found the lectures stimulating and taught in a practical manner by engaging professors who clearly are passionate about these topics. Abraham Lincoln once said: "Upon the subject of education,...,I can only view it as the most important subject that we as people can be engaged in" and I believe that the CUHK LLM is engagement well spent.”

“Despite the absence of certain things we would normally associate with student life (physical classrooms, face-to-face contact), my first term at CUHK has been fantastic. As someone who was previously against going down the track of law, I now can only say that I wish I had gone down this path sooner. For this, I owe my teachers, colleagues, and friends at CUHK an unpayable debt of gratitude for opening my eyes to the rich and fascinating world of law, and showing me that the spirit of the profession goes far beyond IRAC, past papers, and model answers.”

“The JD Programme of CUHK LAW has strengthened my critical thinking skills and provided me with rigorous legal training. The curriculum here is inevitably challenging and demanding, yet I have benefited from the generous support of the teaching staff and the fruitful discussions with my fellow students. I believe joining CUHK LAW has been the right choice for me to develop all necessary skills for my future career in the legal profession.”

“It’s been great to have the opportunity to participate in the LLM Programme (CBL) at CUHK LAW. The CBL Programme gives an excellent opportunity to gain a new perspective on Chinese law. The knowledge I gained helped me embark on the legal comparative researches. What is more, professors try hard to make their subjects as practical as possible. The courses not just help students develop critical thinking skills and overall academic ability, but also provide insights into learning to think like a lawyer. Simultaneously, students can benefit from new skills relevant for the market today and tomorrow.”

I find myself in a community full of bright colleagues and brilliant lecturers who are dedicated to sharing their knowledge and helping each and every student succeed in their individual pursuits. The courses I took are not only about legal principles and the relevant case law, but they also invite students to think critically and speak out on contemporary legal issues. Although the JD Programme is rigorous, every course is highly intellectually stimulating. The professors are passionate and approachable. The flexibility offered by the Faculty has allowed me to modify the length and sequence of my study such that it fits around my job. The Part-time JD Programme caters very well to students who would prefer to ease into legal study progressively by experiencing what the study of law and a potential legal career would be like. The friendly and professional environment at CUHK LAW also facilitates an enjoyable study and effective career planning for students.”

“Pursuing LLM in International Economic Law at CUHK has been a rewarding journey. The study modules are largely skill-based, including problem-solving exercise and in-class discussion about legal issues which are practically relevant “on the job”. As a candidate working in the financial sector, I find the Programme highly relevant and enlightening that it not only stimulates interests in the economic aspect of law but also offers insights into the geopolitics in transnational legal context. This Programme will certainly play an indispensable part in my next stage of career progression.”

“This is a special academic year, because of the COVID-19, we have to study and discuss online, which is a huge challenge for us. Meanwhile, it also brings some advantages. We can get detailed courseware and reading materials in advance on Blackboard for pre-class preview, which makes our classroom learning more focused and efficient. Furthermore, we can look back at the course video after class to find out the content that was not digested in time at class. Additionally, we can discuss with the professor by email, which will give us a new inspiration for the understanding of problems.”

“I would like to share a little essay writing experience. First, choose a small topic and highlight your core opinion. There are word limits in each essay, so it is necessary to choose a small entry point and make your core opinions listed at the beginning of each paragraph. Second, make a substantial and sufficient argument. You need to consult multiple cases, data, academic opinions, etc, to support your core opinion. Last, pay attention to details. The typesetting with good graphics and clear layout would be more favored by professors.”

“It was a challenging yet rewarding experience to study law at CUHK. At the beginning of my first semester, I was overwhelmed by the intensive courses and felt insecure about how the Programme could be carried on under the COVID-19 pandemic. “The study experience in CUHK LAW is so great! Even in the Zoom teaching, our professors' passionate teaching impressed me so much. It feels like sometimes our professors treat us like clients without professional background, because they present the information so clearly that we can easily digest, while sometimes our professors see us as legal talents, because they throw difficult questions to us to inspire our deep thinking. “One of the key studying skills I shared last year was applying the legal knowledge I learnt to actual scenarios. I accidentally found another effective methods: encouraging my classmates to ask me questions. My classmates can often think of problems I have never thought of, or those I am not familiar with. By resolving these questions together, not only can I help others, but also restore issues I have neglected back to my consciousness, and therefore help to enhance my study efficiency.”

“Reading law in CUHK has been exciting and enjoyable. As an airline pilot, studying law seems remote and unrelated, and of course nurturing a new-born makes it more difficult. But I am truly grateful to be part of CUHK LAW, for reading law has been meaningful. Despite the pandemic prohibits us from attending classes in person, I am impressed by the professionalism, dedication and passion our professors have displayed in the course of teaching, even with no faces in Zoom. Allow me to finish this short note by thanking all the teachers and staff members for their excellent work.”

“Before the beginning of school, I asked the seniors about their learning experience, and also find some learning experience in CUHK LAW on the Internet. I will select and combine my own learning programs, according to my own situation (such as time, course selection arrangement, etc.). After that, make changes according to the situation of the first one or two weeks and then stick to the plan. Thanks a lot!”

“It has been challenging for all with the ongoing pandemic, but the teaching and administrative staff of CUHK LAW soldiered on with professionalism and enthusiasm, making it as fruitful as possible for the class. In-class discussions may have been somewhat constrained, but the exchange of ideas both during and off class has not ceased. The LCL Programme provides a solid foundation for students to build further legal knowledge on. It also allows one to understand operation of the common law world with proper perspective. A rewarding experience indeed.”
