Acupuncture is considered to be a type of holistic

medicine. Unlike traditional Western medicine which

mainly treats the symptoms of an illness, holistic

medicine like acupuncture aims to treat the mind,

body and soul of the person. Therefore, acupuncture

can treat a variety of conditions. Many people sing

the praises of how acupuncture has helped with

headaches, back pain, infertility, allergies and even

hot flashes.

Chinese acupuncture believes the body is made up

of pathways or meridians. Each of these meridians is

connected to an organ system. Energy flows through

these organ systems. At various times in our lives

the energy may flow easily or there may be a

blockage. Acupuncture works by accessing these

meridians at different points on the body to allow the

energy to flow easily through the organ systems.

Acupuncture needles are hair-like. They don’t feellike regular needles that you would experience in the

doctor’s office. The person may feel a slight

sensation when the needle is inserted especially if

their is pain in that area. The needles are so thin that

almost ten of them could fit inside the hollow part of

a hypodermic needle!

Acupuncture is one of the therapies that is coveredby many insurance plans. The best option would be

to check with your provider before scheduling a

session. Although your insurance may cover

treatments, many acupuncturists do not bill

insurance and will require full payment after the

session. The acupuncturist will give you a receipt to

use for reimbursement from the insurance companyif applicable.
