TRANSCRIPT
Feeling a touch jaded six of us set off on motorcycles for the French Alps for some fresh, crisp air and scenery. Truly magnificent, particularly when above the snow-line in The Col du Petite St Bernard and, for me, the quite different and even more impressive Col de Ia Madeleine which seemed a million miles away from the ski resorts. One area of concern was that in the Alpine passes some of the approaching drivers seemed uncertain as to the side of the road on which they should travel. It was a little disconcerting to be going round a bend only to have a Renault 5 suddenly appear on the wrong side of the road.
What has that to do with News line? Nothing really, except that two days after returning home I was approaching the Broadmead Roundabout in the inside lane to go into Keynsham when a car driver leaving Keynsham and wishing to join the A4 to go in the direction of Bath decided to go in an anticlockwise i.e. the wrong, direction round the roundabout. How he passed between my car and the lorry in the lane to go down the by-pass I shall never know. The driver did not stop- surprise, surprise!
The waste paper collection in June at 12.62 tonnes was disappointing in that it was a tonne or so below our expectations. I mentioned this to one resident, a keen environmentalist, and she indicated that she prefers to put her paper out for Wansdyke Recycling. What she did not realise is that we dispose of our waste paper through Wansdyke Recycling and neither party seeks to compete with the other. So if you want Wansdyke Recycling to have your paper put it out for us on Tuesday, 1st August and we will see that they receive it as we no longer deal directly with any of the waste paper merchants. We are now receiving a good rate per tonne and the much needed money will help maintain Saltford Hall.
On page 15 there is an invitation, or an appeal, if you prefer, for existing SCA Members to renew their subscription and for others to join. Typically, the cost works out at about£1 :00 per household, per annum. The subscriptions are very modest and will not even cover the full cost of your copies of Newsline, so please do renew/join! Many thanks! (JAC)

Terry Poll
The introduction of the new style SCAN and the passing of an era gives me the opportunity to recall past Editors of the old monthly News-sheet starting with Terry
Poll who produced SCAN from May, 1990 to February, 1995.
It was gas that brought Terry to Bath and then Saltford when he transferred from his home town of Plymouth to take up a post in what became South West Gas in its headquarters in Bath.
He and his wife, Sheila, arrived in Saltford in 1975 and both quickly became involved in the activities of the village.
His lifetime dedication to the Scout Movement has been recognised recently by his award of the Silver Acorn alongside his Medal of Merit and bar. In addition he holds the British Empire Medal for his services to gas and the community.
I worked with Terry for a few months on SCAN when Barbara Hazell's health failed. In spite of his crippling condition that would have put most people down and out, he has always impressed me with his cheerfulness and vitality.
This is reflected in his recollections of five years as Editor. He recalls telephone calls at ridiculous hours of the morning regarding waste paper collection or the Saltford Hall Caretaker's telephone number.
He remembers how he once forgot to change over to a new issue number and date for one publication and how the whole Poll family set to and corrected every copy by hand. Fred Reed's face was always a study when he realised that there were several attachments stapled to SCANs because none of his delivery team liked too many attachments.
Terry Poll is one of those unique band of people who have spent a lifetime never being able to say 'No' to anybody. It mattered not how many other commitments he might have he could somehow always fit in another one. So it was with his five years editorship of SCAN. He never missed one issue during his time or let anyone down with copy provided it was submitted before 'deadline'. He needs our thanks for his unstinting efforts both from regular SCAN readers in particular and Saltford community is general. Thanks Terry!

Saltford C.C. v Somerset County C.C.
Saltfonl Cricket Club is still basking in the glory of facing the stars from the Somerset County side.
Nearly four hundred people turned up at the Wedmore Road ground on July 9, for the game to help Saltford Scouts pay for a new minibus.
Not only did Somerset include their opening fast bowlers, England Test star Andrew Caddick and Hying Dutchman Andre van Troost, but they drafted in Surrey and Pakistan star Waquar Younis.
Former Keynsham batsman Marcus Trescothick opened the batting for Somerset who totalled 307-5, iocluding several sixes over the pavilion and tennis courts.
It was little Pakistani spinner Mushtaq Ahmed who was the star of the show who
Shelagh's
01225-873006
went through his full range of spin and impressions of famous fast bowlers.
Saltford is the only village team that Somerset are playing this year.
The Club could never possibly have staged the game if it was not for the tremendous effort from the 1751 Fete Committee.
Diane and Ted Hall and the rest of the Committee put in a vast amount of work over the past six months to stage the game.
They transformed the ground with series of marquees, flower tubs and also had sight screens built for the match.
The result? Saltford lost a close game by a mere two hundred runs.
Anyone wanting to join the Club should contact me on 0117-9831391. (Dennis Payter, Chairman, Saltford C.C.)

SALTFORD PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
NEW COUNCILLORS:- Welcome to Doreen Lewis, Bob Burke, Malcolm Guthrie and Peter Hall.
THEA4 At the time of writing, work is almost complete on the cycle track together with a new island and right turn markings to Pixash Lane. Within the next few weeks the new speed restriction signs will be in place- cables have already been laid for an illuminated 30 m.p.h. sign east of Avon Valley Garnge and a start made on the 'gateway facilities'. The project as a whole is running approximately four weeks late with completion promised before the end of the year - patience please at the inevitable delays.
SALTFORD YOUNG PEOPLE'S CLUB The Parish Council has paid for the services of a professional Youth Worker from Avon County Council to help run the Club. Four Councillors have formed a Steering Committee which will enable the Club to formally apply for gmnts from local Authorities for continued support. The Club is closed until September 6th and during the break we will be actively looking for similar support from other organisations.
With these new initiatives and professional help available, it is hoped that parents and people who have helped in the past will consider doing so again, if only on an occasional basis. It is vital that the young people of Saltford have a place to go at least once a week. In the meantime, a very sincere 'thank you' to the two ladies who have almost single handedly run the Oub for the past three years.
PUBLIC TOILETS Despite vandalism, we have every intention of keeping the toilets open and in reasonable condition. The toilets in The Shallows are to be refurbished. Both toilets are inspected daily by Wansdyke.
NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH People may question the usefulness of Neighbourhood Watch, but there are parts of the village where it works very well and we would like to see it extended. If you are interested in setting up a scheme, contact the Clerk and he will put you in touch with the relevant Police Officer.
SALTFORD BRASS MILL On Monday, July 3rd the Saltford Brass Mill Roof Restomtion Project, largely financed by a gmnt from English Heritage, was officially opened by Mrs. Jane Sharman, their Director of Conservation and Professor Angus Buchanan, Bath University, Industrial Archaeologist. The Parish Council was represented by the Chairman, Councillor John Scott, Councillor Frank Vine, Planning Chairman and several other Councillors.
The Project was developed, following the initiative of Councillor Eric Linfield who convened a meeting for all interested parties with English Heritage in the Autumn of 1992, after a long campaign by local residents in the Saltford Residents' Association. English Heritage, together with Avon County Council and Wansdyke District Council, promised
11
their support, Saltford Parish Council helped with a small grant for dealing with the trees on the site.
We hope that local interest in this historic building and Scheduled Ancient Monument- the last working Brass Mill in Europe, will continue. Some limited public access will soon become available, but volunteers are still needed to assist the local working party with the construction of the bridge. (Please contact Charles Johnstone, Architect, telephone 01225-873209 for further details)
TREE WARDEN As you walk the village, do you take an interest in our variety of fine trees? We are looking for a Tree Warden who will keep an eye on Saltford's trees and report on loss/damage/ condition so that we can take the appropriate action.
DOG FOULING We have ongoing talks with the Sports Club and others about the erection of signs and we will be approaching the new Unitary Authority with a view to the implementation of bye laws.
LOCAL SHOPS We cannot stress too often:-
'USE THEM OR LOSE THEM' If you have views, ideas or complaints, why don't you discuss them with us at our monthly Council Meeting? The atmosphere is informal, and this is the only way the Council can respond to local demands. (JAS- Chairman)

SAbTFEJRB SINEiERS
Although you may not have had opportunity to notice, we have had a busy two months since the last 'Newsline'.
If you were in Keynsham on the morning of Saturday, 24th June, you surely could not have missed the Jazz Band playing under The Clock! In the Parle, Library and Key Centre other musical events were staged as part of "National Music Week". Our contribution took the form of a joint Concert with the Keynsham Orchestra and the K.L.O.G. at Wellsway School in the evening. This was a "free of charge" event, our numbers including some of the operatic choruses you appreciated at our Concert in May and some "Songs of the 40's" from the V .E. Day commemoration event
On 4th July we provided light music for a Concert held by Keynsham Lions for the disadvantaged and elderly in the area. This included selections from "Showboat", "Phantom of the Opera", "Sweet Charity" and others, including some "Songs of the 40's" accompanied by a well tuned audience! We also had contributions from "Saltford Serenade" and delightful piano and clarinet duets from our pianists Debbie Workman and Hannah James which were enthusiastically acclaimed.
Regretfully we are losing our young pianists, whose continuing studies will be taking them away from this area. They brought joy to the Singers and will be missed. We are, however, fortunate in that Esme Vaughan will return as our pianist in September. You may remember her playing for our Concert in May, 1993.
We have been joined by a new Tenor, Francis Candy, but there could still be room for you - subject to audition, of course.
Good progress is being made in our endeavours to find a replacement for our long -serving Conductor, David Roberts. Three interested cotJ.ductors met with Choir Members and conducted us briefly on 11th July. A most interesting evening. An appointment should be made soon after the copy date for this 'Newsline'. Watch this space!

British Heart Foundation
The Keynsham and District Branch of the British Heart Foundation would like to express grateful thanks for the financial support given to our House to House and Street collection during the week 19/24 June.
The amount raised was £1,172.26. This was in excess of last year's amount and my Committee are very appreciative of the generosity shown by households towards the Foundation, especially in the present economic climate. (CPL)
