Philip & Robin Mellett ‘‘12 years around the world in a sailing yacht’

2

Last week we had a break from the norm as we had Club Member Philip Mellett and wife Robin being interviewed by ‘Commodore’ PP Peter Johns on their sailing adventures around the world. The following is a summary of this enthralling nautical tale:

Peter: In the past 12 years Robin and Philip have sailed around the world one and a half times. So where did it all start?Philip: A foundation RCB member Mayer Page was one of my closest friends. Among other things we shared a love of sailing adventures. He persuaded me that life was too short to spend it working hard and being stressed out - “you should live your dream”. It was not an easy decision to make as our children were still studyingPeter: Did you have much difficulty convincing Robin?Philip: Since we met Robin has been my boating mate, PLUS she loves to go to exotic places. I said to her I wanted to sail around the world. I told her the deal was that we would buy a pilot house boat so you won’t get wet sailing, we will have a satellite phone so you can call the kids and I won’t bitch about the bill, you can fly home whenever you want and you don’t. Her response “How can I say no to that?” So many of my yachtie friends get it all wrong. They buy a fast ocean racer to take the wife cruising in. She gets scared, wet and uncomfortable and spits the dummy and that is the end of the dream.

Peter: So in September 1997 we took delivery of our first Buizen 48 cruising yacht. Tell us about it?

Philip: It’s designed to be a luxury world cruising yacht and is strong. It has powered winches and powered furling of sails so that Robin can sail her alone. And

we carry enough fuel to motor Melbourne to Brisbane without putting up the sails. The water maker makes 200 litres of fresh water per hour and we have a powerful diesel generator to run everything. We have a 3.4 metre dinghy and it takes us to town for provisioning, exploring and out to dinner. We have 3 bedrooms, two bathrooms, washing machine, dishwasher and in addition to a fridge and freezer we have a dedicated vegetable cooler and microwave /convection oven, a gas cook top and oven. It’s also air conditioned and has panoramic glass windows.

Peter: So you left in 2002?Philip: Yes after 5 years practising on the east coast of Australia, we sailed out of Port Phillip heads on 17 March 2002 on what we thought would be a 5 year circumnavigation. But in 2005 whilst cruising Sardinia, we were having such a great time we decided to build another Buizen 48 and start again from Sydney. Peter: So where have you been?Philip: First year, through the remote islands of Indonesia to Thailand, next year across the Indian Ocean, up the Red sea to Croatia via Turkey and the Greek islands. The following year our first stop was Venice and then to Barcelona with about four months cruising our favourite destination of Italy. We started the second time from Sydney in 2006. This time via New Caledonia to Thailand and thence heading ever westward till some years later we reached our current destination of New Zealand. In all, around 30,000nm, which if we had sailed continuously 24 hours a day would take 200 days. Most people who hear we are sailing around the world think of us as at sea all of the time. In fact we are sailing for only 5% of the time and the remainder is spent exploring interesting destinations. I have become an expert in evaluating coffee shops and South Sea pearls. Happily we are able to leave the boat at the end of each 5-6 month sailing season and return home to enjoy the Australian summer and so have been able to keep our Australian life going.Peter: Did you go off alone?Philip: We work to our own agenda but often we team up with other voyagers and that adds to the interest. One of our favourites was Geoff McGeary. Continued page 12

Auction of Pearl Earrings by Greg Biggin

The Sheppard’s come back to the ‘flock’

Greg Biggin was given the job of auctioning a setSouth Sea pearl earrings which were donated by Philip and Robin Mellett. These were made from a group of pearls they traded for bottles alcohol on one their South Sea trips. Cameron Ward was the successful bidder.

Greg also auctioned A Reserve tickets to the opera that were donated to the Club. These were purchased by Glenn Ross for $289.

All proceeds from the Pearlearrings auction will go to the Charitable Foundation and from the Opera tickets, Community.Pictured at right are some of the South Sea Pearls from which the earrings were made.

It was great to see Peter & Margaret Sheppard come to our meeting last week. Peter (of Peter Sheppard Footwear fame) was a long term member of our Club and a great contributor. Many will recall with fondness his leadership of the “Dendy” horse racing syndicates, of which about half of our membership were owners, the most famous being the Very Reverend Harlin Butterley.

Some years ago, Peter and Marg departed the rat race and went cruising on the high seas. Their story is a fascinating one and may be read on Mr Google. Peter is now recognised as the elder statesman of Nordhavn Boating, and when not cruising, resides in Brighton.

3 - ROTARY’S WHEEL EMBLEM A wheel has been the symbol of Rotary since our earliest days. The first design was made by Chicago Rotarian Montague Bear, an engraver who drew a simple wagon wheel, with a few lines to show dust and motion. The wheel was said to illustrate “Civilization and Movement.” Most of the early clubs had some form of wagon wheel on their publications and letterheads. Finally, in 1922, it was decided that all Rotary clubs should adopt a single design as the exclusive emblem of Rotarians. Thus, in 1923, the present gear wheel, with 24 cogs and six spokes was adopted by the “Rotary International Association.” A group of engineers advised that the geared wheel was mechanically unsound and would not work without a “keyway” in the center of the gear to attach it to a power shaft. So, in 1923 the keyway was added and the design which we now know was formally adopted as the official Rotary International emblem.

ROTARY FELLOWSHIP MONTH - WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Fellowship is one of the five core values of Rotary - diversity, integrity, service, leadership and fellowship. It is through fellowship in Rotary that much is achieved: friendships develop, clubs are strengthened, projects evolve and humanity is served. Strong fellowship among Rotarians and meaningful service projects characterize Rotary worldwide.

Keen Rotarians look forward to meeting their friends at their Rotary club meetings and sharing in social events with their fellow Rotarians, partners and families. Working together in fellowship strengthens our commitment to Rotary and builds bigger and better Rotary clubs.

The Board has approved a donation to the Open Family Chatterbox Bus for $21,500. As this exceeds the Board authority, Members will be asked to vote on this donation at our final meeting for Bill’s year on Thursday 18 June 2015.

What is the “Chatterbox Bus”?The Chatterbox Bus is a unique mobile street-based outreach service operating within the Melbourne CBD that provides direct aid and support to literally thousands of disadvantaged and homeless young people on the streets of Melbourne’s CBD each year.

The Chatterbox Bus service actively engages the whole of community and is now in its 10th year of operation. It is delivered 5 nights per week by skilled youth outreach workers; with the service forging collaborations with partners which include Victorian Police, City of Melbourne, Department of Human Services and a vast range of service providers to develop a joined-up service approach and a more strategic response to youth frequenting city streets, some of whom are involved in anti-social behaviour, violence and crime.

The service is tailored to provide end-to-end support – assisting young people with their immediate needs and then working with those with complex vulnerabilities and circumstances in the longer term to resolve issues. Their goal is to help young people have improved health and wellbeing and reach their potential in life by engaging with community in a positive way. Support provided varies widely. Workers may support young people in court; arrange for the young person’s admission to a detox unit; work with Job Active Providers to assist with work; or liaise with school staff and families to support their re-engagement in education.

But the wheels are coming off the 25-year-old bus, which regularly breaks down, and has now been permanently retired. It’s to be replaced with a new bus donated by Crown Coaches. The donation from Brighton Rotary will pay for the internal fit-out of the bus. The new bus will be officially launched on Tuesday 16 June 2015.

For more details, speak with either of Dale Hoy, Barry Hickman or Stephen West, each of whom has spent time helping out on the Chatterbox Bus.

Dawn broke as nine hardy Hackers straggled out of the car park to line up for the Pre-Game Putting Competition, which was decisively won by Ivan Vojlay. Then, before tee-off, Captain Bruce Crossley declared that today only three clubs and a putter could be used. Accordingly, the three groups of three hit off with a variety of clubs (drivers, hybrids & irons) but with the usual variety of results.

An early highlight was Rob Foster sinking a ten metre putt for a birdie two on the second hole. However, after that, there were no more birdies and only seven pars, with putting proving a challenge on the wet greens and with Ian Cole experiencing an outbreak of the yips. Jeff Gochowski narrowly beat Ian Cole and Paul Nicholson for Nearest-the-Pin on the fourth, while Rob Foster beat off Ron Stark to take out the Longest Drive on the seventh.

The Venus hole #8 saw Bruce Crossley re-join the in-the-water club, while Bill Howley narrowly missed out on reclaiming the Venus trophy. Back at the pro shop, the three group runners-up, Ian Cole, Ivan Vojlay and Sven-Erik Bredenberg bought the coffees, while all enjoyed chocolate cookies during the trophy presentations. At the end of the day, the overall joint Winners Off-The-Stick with 41 apiece were Jeff Gochowski and Rob Foster, while Rob also took home the silver trophy for Handicap Honours, winning by only one stroke from Bill Howley.

Philip & Robin Mellett ‘‘12 years around the world in a sailing yacht’

PRINTED BY

Robin: I think I have found it more isolating than Philip does. When you are meeting other cruisers the men an easily bond discussing the ntricacies of how your bow roller can be improved, or the best way to stop the rock and rolls when sailing dead down wind. It is not quite as easy as that being a woman. There have been some terrific friendships formed, but it is essentially a nomadic life with everyone on a different journey and you find someone with whom you have lots in common but in a week they are gone and you probably never see them again. Fortunately there are always books, and even better now that there are ebooks.Peter: How about pirates?Philip: This is the first question every one asks. To my knowledge there are three areas where pirates are a threat to cruising yachts: near Trinidad off the coast of Venezuela, south of the Philippines and the straits between Somalia and Yemen at the entrance to the Red Sea. We avoided the first two and were lucky with timing in the latter. We would not now sail through Pirate Alley as the Somalian waters are known, because the pirates have been emboldened by their success and fully understand that ransom pays much better than theft from boats. When

we went through the pirates we less well organized and equipped.

Peter: So do you carry guns? Philip: No relative fire power. You have to decide to pick up to kill not negotiate.

Peter: Isn’t sailing around the world dangerous?

Philip: Far safer than driving in MelbournePeter: What happens when you arrive in a country? Do you need to book ahead?Philip: Philip’s view about entering a new country goes that is generally very simple. You just sail up and radio port control and they either direct you to a customs dock or come out in a boat. You need to advise in advance your arrival into Australia, New Zealand and USA but other countries you just rock up. BUT when it comes to bureaucracy I am designated as the captain as he cannot bear the tedious paperwork. It is often a great surprise to the always male officials when a female skipper comes to “do clearance”. And it is not simple. When you arrive at the airport it is all laid out for you and you just follow through queues to have Immigration and Customs officers process you. Not so when you arrive by boat, you have to seek out the offices which may involve bus trip or a half hour walk between them, and then there is lots and lots of form filling. Some of it really funny - in a form in one country we were asked to declare if anyone had died whilst we were at sea. Peter: So did you make the right decision to go sailing?Philip: We have had the experience of a lifetime and each time we have asked ourselves did we make the right choice the answer has been a resounding YES“Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from a safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore - Dream - Discover”.

Peter: So what are the highlights Robin?Robin: Firstly the people you meet along the way - both cruisers and locals. Then the amazing sites. Often we anchor right in the middle of the ancient town. Stern to on the town quay in Europe is my favourite. And places, Thailand, the Red Sea, Turkey, Sicily and

Tahiti. Oh and I forgot the orangutan’s in Borneo. When you cruise like we do you are not just a tourist there for the day. We may stay days, weeks or a month, we shop, look for spare parts, have things fixed even hair coloured. Then there are the amazing places and sites.

Peter: What is life like when you are crossing oceans?Philip: Well we prefer to make the crossings with just the two of us. We get on well and so we avoid the risk of having to live close with someone or 20 or so days when you are starting to find perfectly normal behaviour irritating. The two longest legs are across the Atlantic and the Eastern Pacific. Each about 20 days. Someone is on watch 24 x 7. We take a slightly unorthodox approach - Robin is inherently a night owl so I go to bed around 8 pm and she runs the boat until 1-2 am, then I take over until dawn. The way we handle it is to set a kitchen timer which is out of reach and goes off every 15 to 20 minutes to remind us to check the radar, the horizon, the courses and engine gauges. During the day we take turns snoozing to catch up. But you are always more than a little tired. And as we have the rule that no one is allowed out of the cockpit unless someone else is on deck that sometimes means broken sleep. Robin typically watches a video to keep awake, between her 20 minute checks and as we crossed the Atlantic I used to bid her good night and wish her an enjoyable visit with the Bartletts and she spent the nights watching multiple seasons of West Wing. The days are busy, as you are still running a boat and keeping house - there are boat chores, weather skeds, emails and fixing problems. Then we are typically reading up on the next port of call - harbour entrances, regulations and the best restaurants’ and coffee shop, and what is interesting to see and do. We do not fish much because when we have spare time we prefer to read and Robin is dynamite on fish smells.

Peter: What do you eat? Philip: We eat out a lot whilst on land as

if it is just the two of us this gives us the opportunity to do some people watching and feel part of a community. The boat is particularly well equipped with good

refrigeration and freezer capacity as well as our special veggie fridge. And Robin has tons of dried and canned supplies. So generally we eat as if we are a home though comfort foods such as pasta a big favourite while we are at sea. Peter: Do you feel isolated?Philip: Not really, We have daily email contact and when in port we buy wifi cards so we can skype and pay some online bills. When in settled areas we regularly have family and friends come sail with us.
