You may be reading this handbook because your employment circumstances have recently changed as a result of the economic downtown or
because you anticipate that you will need new skills or to acquire new learning. If you are in this situation then you can enhance your future
employment prospects by upskilling now. In the pages that follow you will find many learning opportunities for the part-time learner at Dundalk
Institute of Technology and you will also find the staff of the Lifelong Learning Centre only too willing to provide support and guidance as you
consider you future learning options.
It is acknowledged that to make a full contribution to our
economy or society one needs to continue learning
throughout one's lifetime. This is particularly the case in the
knowledge intensive society in which we now live. Lifelong
learners range from those who seek a second chance, having
perhaps left full-time education at an early stage, to those
who already have formal qualifications but who wish to
continue their professional development through learning.
The motivation of learners also ranges from those who simply
wish to acquire knowledge to those who want to get new
qualifications.
Dundalk Institute of Technology is here to support all lifelong
learners in the north east region. Through its Lifelong
Learning Centre, the Institute is committed to developing
high quality and relevant lifelong learning and continuing
education opportunities. It is committed to an ever-widening
range of part-time provision; to building progression routes
for learners who wish to access higher qualifications and to
extending the modes of learning, especially through distance
provision and e-learning.
I am delighted to welcome you to this learning community.
As a part-time learner you will bring a wealth of expertise and
knowledge to this Institute. For our part, we would want to
encourage you to avail of all the facilities and resources of the
Institute and hope that your time with us is both stimulating
and rewarding.
Denis Cummins, MSc,President
Welcome 1
Over a thousand people enrol on lifelong
learning courses in Dundalk IT every year.
Committed, hardworking and highly
motivated, they are a source of great pride
to the Institute and of mutual support to
each other. Our students come from all
walks of life and professions, and their
reasons for coming back to education are
just as varied.
The Lifelong Learning Centre at Dundalk Institute of
Technology is a resource for the whole community of the
Northeast, offering a range of opportunities for people
to help with their career development or their personal
growth, or to satisfy the need for learning for its own sake.
Our range of academic and other learning opportunities
not only includes dozens of courses which have proved
their popularity over the years, but also introduces
some new ones reflecting our requirement to adapt to
the changing educational and training needs of a
dynamic society.
As you thumb through these pages we hope you will share in
our belief at DkIT that learning should be not only lifelong but
also life enhancing. Whatever your age, career, or ability,
participation in education and training should be challenging,
satisfying and fun.
We look forward to your enrolment at the Institute and to
sharing the lifelong learning experience with you in the
months ahead.

Established in 1970 Dundalk Institute of Technology provides
higher educational opportunities in Business, Engineering,
Science, Computing, Nursing and Applied Arts at a variety of
levels, from Higher Certificate to Masters level and through
full-time and part-time programmes. The Institute is currently
divided into four Schools: Business Studies and Humanities,
Engineering, Informatics and Creative Arts and Health
and Science.
Dundalk Institute of Technology continues to grow and
currently student numbers are c.4,000 full-time students and
c.1,200 part-time students. To facilitate these numbers a new
Student Services facility opened in September 2000 to
accommodate student needs in health, careers, chaplaincy,
students' union, etc. A new Library and Information Resource
Centre opened in August 2001 which provides state of the
art learning and IT facilities for students. We also have a
Regional Development Centre, extended and refurbished in
2005, where Institute expertise and local industry are
combined. A dedicated building to accommodate the School
of Health and Science was also opened in 2005. Most
recently the 600-seater Institute Restaurant and Black Box
Theatre opened in Easter 2007. Finally, the Institute purchased
the adjacent P. J. Carroll's site in 2002, and the Informatics
and Creative Arts School will be located there in 2010.

Awarding BodyHETAC – Higher Education and Training Awards Council
(www.hetac.ie).
BackgroundFor those working fulltime, particularly those in industry, a Masters or
PhD qualification by research is becoming an increasingly popular
alternative to a taught programme. This is due in part to the highly
flexible attendance commitments which facilitate the student and
his/her busy work-life schedule. In addition, with the appropriate
academic supervision, the in-depth investigative nature of a research
programme allows the student to design their research objectives
in line with their own interests, as well as those of their particular
company or organisation. Thus, the resulting piece of research
should be capable of addressing particular industrial or sectoral issues
and ultimately be of value to the student’s own organisation.
Aims of the Research ProgrammesIn September 2001, DkIT established the Centre for Entrepreneurship
Research. Drawing on the Institute’s educational, research, training
and incubation experience, the Centre focuses on research projects in
a broad range of areas within the field of Entrepreneurship. Its small
team of researchers is drawn from both academic and non-academic
staff, including external associates from academic institutions in
Ireland, mainland Europe and the USA. Collectively, the Centre's
research team has published a wide range of articles in the field of
Entrepreneurship and related areas. The Institute, through its Centre
for Entrepreneurship Research (CER), aims to promote industry-based
postgraduate research in areas related to Entrepreneurship.
The Centre is particularly interested in attracting appropriately
qualified, full or part-time, postgraduate research students in the
following areas:
• Effective innovation strategies within the organisation• The impact of new technologies on the organisation• Intrapreneurial systems leading to spin-offs• Issues of sustainability and competitiveness in industry• Entrepreneurship education and training• Innovation and Intrapreneurship in Irish SMEs• Female entrepreneurship• Business financing and growth strategies• International enterprise development strategies• Enterprise policy and support systems for micro and SME

Accelerating Campus Entrepreneurship (ACE)The Accelerating Campus Entrepreneurship (ACE) Initiative is
a joint collaboration of Institute of Technology
Blanchardstown, Cork Institute of Technology, Institute of
Technology Sligo and National University of Ireland Galway
and is led by Dundalk Institute of Technology through the
Regional Development Centre and supported through the
HEA’s Strategic Innovation Fund.
This project seeks, through a collaborative approach, to create
entrepreneurial graduates. This not only requires embedding
entrepreneurship education into existing non-business
programmes but effecting organisational change within and
between the institutions to reflect entrepreneurial processes
involving collaboration between the academic Schools and
Departments, Incubation and Technology Transfer Offices.
It provides innovative approaches to entrepreneurship
education to ensure students from non-business programmes
take enterprise related modules with the student gaining
experience of what it is like to run and operate real businesses
and in this way promoting self-employment as a real,
attractive and viable career option (www.aceinitiative.ie).
Success Through Succession (STS)The Success Through Succession Programme (STS) is a unique
programme specifically designed to strategically assist second
and third generation family-owned businesses to move
through succession issues. Offering a pyschology focused
approach to help address family business issues, the project
provides applicants with in-house mentoring and support for
succession planning.
Innovation for Competitive EnterprisesProgramme (ICE)The Innovation for Competitive Enterprises Programme (ICE)

products and processes.
Both the STS and ICE programmes are part-financed by the
EU INTERREG IVA Programme managed by the Special EU
Programmes Body and are joint collaborations of Dundalk
Institute of Technology, University of Ulster, Glasgow
Caledonian University and University of Glasgow. Both
programmes are aimed at supporting companies based in the
six Southern Border Counties of Ireland, Northern Ireland and
Western Scotland.
The Regional Development Centre also spearheads the
growth and development of the digital media sector in the
North East and cross-border area in the areas of film,
animation, gaming, television and video production and
