Gold Canyon, AZ. Many Gold Canyon

pollution, size of helicopter, wildlife

disturbance, processes and what can we do

to keep our Gold Canyon environment

The stores are full of school supplies, plans are made

for the final camp out or vacation before school starts, the

garden has passed its peak and we're hoping we'll forget to

cover it in case of frost (good way to end the canning

season). Signs of August regardless of where you live. I'll admit I don't miss

the school days part of August but would still enjoy the campout and a small

garden. We've tried tomatoes in a pot, in the ground and in the house. The

desert and the desert animals win!

Enough gardening--find your calendar and pen and jot these events down.

Wednesday, August 24th we're having a salad potluck and jewelry exchange

in the Superstition Center from 11 am-1 pm. Bring a salad to share and a

piece of jewelry (if you choose) to exchange. Please sign up at the Activity

Office so we have an idea of how many are attending. Let's Do Dinner is

Wednesday, August 31st at Mt. Athos Greek Restaurant in Florence. Sign up

at the Activity Office, drive on your own and meet at the restaurant at 5 pm.

Ladies Do Lunch will be at the Landmark Restaurant in Mesa on Wednesday,

September 14th. Please sign up at the Activity Office, drive on your own and

meet at the restaurant about 11:30 am. Put your calendar and pen away and

have some fun.

August, 20114

Although July is usually a

quiet month in MBV, we

had many fun events to

bring us all out of the air-conditioned

house. First there was the Mystery Bus

trip, starting at the Gilbert Museum and

ending at the Farmhouse Restaurant. Next

was the Pool Party and then many ladies

went to lunch at the Elephant Bar. We held

a Christmas in July party and the Pink

Trailer came to the Coffee & News.

Rounding out the month we had a Village

dinner at Tia Rosa. Hope you are having a

fun summer too.

The staff has started working on the

fall events so there will be lots of fun

things to do when residents start to

return to the Valley of the Sun.

How does a catered dinner

and the first MBV Newlywed

Game sound for October? All

this for only $10?

Information I have been able to obtain is as follows:1. Requestor submitted by JSH time LLC (James Hladky) Owner of Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club

2. Site is at Superstition Mountain Drive & Club Village Drive, at Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club.

3. Size is approximately the size of a tennis court.

4. Number of flights, was requested at 30 per month.

5. Flight Pattern was to go behind the Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club and towards the Mountain range.

6. Noise pollution & Size of helicopter, you can go to “You Tube” to watch and hear a helicopter Robinson R44 or R66, which is

thought to be the model to be housed at the site; www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0-KXmCi6mw

The chart below is from “Stop the Helipad”.It helped me understand how to measure noise pollution.

http://stophelipad.com/noise.shtml , however they do not say what type aircraft was measured.

COMPARATIVE NOISE LEVELS:[Each 10-decibel increase in sound level is approximately a doubling of loudness.]

SOUND DECIBEL LEVEL TIME PERMITTED

Rustling Leaves 20 dB No Limit

Refrigerator 45 dB No limit

Average Home 50 dB No Limit

Clothes Dryer 60 dB No Limit

A clothes dryer sounds twice as loud as the ambient noise in an average home.

Washing Machine 65 dB No Limit

Car 70 dB No Limit

A car engine sounds twice as loud as a clothes dryer.

Busy Traffic 75 dB No Limit

Mini Bike 80 dB No Limit

Mini-bike another doubling of perceived sound.

Screaming Child 85 dB 8 Hours

Screaming child again twice as loud as the mini-bike, another 100% increase.

Passing Motorcycle 95 dB 8 Hours

Jack Hammer 100 dB 2 Hours

Jackhammer another doubling of the noise level.

Helicopter 105 dB 1 Hour

Helicopter is 50% louder than a jackhammer.

a) Noise pollution effects on humans: My information has been obtained through Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noise_

Noise health effects are both health and behavioral in nature. This unwanted sound can damage physiological and psychological health.

Noise pollution can cause annoyance and aggression, hypertension, high stress levels, tinnitus, hearing loss, sleep disturbances, and other

harmful effects. Furthermore, stress and hypertension are the leading causes to health problems, whereas tinnitus can lead to

forgetfulness, severe depression and at times panic attacks.

b) Noise pollution effects on wildlife; Information was obtained through Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noise_ Noise can

have a detrimental effect on animals, increasing the risk of death by changing the delicate balance in predator or prey detection and

avoidance, and interfering the use of the sounds in communication especially in relation to reproduction and in navigation. Acoustic

overexposure can lead to temporary or permanent loss of hearing.

7. Process: The Planning & Zoning (P&Z) Commission denied the request for the heliport/helipad. The Board of Supervisors (BOS)

has the right to overturn the P & Z Commission’s denial and they may vote any way they feel appropriate. It is up to the citizens of our

area to let their position be known to the BOS.

Conclusion:The P&Z Commission is strictly a recommending body. They review all the input for the application, zoning laws and usage request,

and then forward their recommendation to the BOS for them to review and do a final vote on the application. What can we do? We can

talk to our Supervisor, Bryan Martyn.

Let's all keep an eye out for the next BOS agenda. For information regarding Board of Supervisors meetings and P&Z hearings go to:www.pinalcountyaz.gov<http://www.pinalcountyaz.gov/<http://www.pinalcountyaz.gov%3chttp//www.pinalcountyaz.gov/>> Inquire PZ-003-11, PZ-PD-004-11

Our finance are in good shape and as

of now the reserve fund is at 76% of

the reserve study recommendation.

This is considered to be a strong

position. Recently a new homeowner

told the office that they had checked us

out concerning our financial position

and our strong reserve fund was a

determining factor in their purchase of

a home in MBV.

The motor on the water feature

pump had to be replaced, as a new

motor was less costly than it would be

to repair the old one. Clearwater was

the low bidder by $2,242.00. They

were the firm that worked on the

feature two years ago when they

repaired the wall, basin, and repainted

the fountain.

The pool deck is scheduled for

repair on August 19th through August

22nd.. The vendor tells us it is best to

do this work in hot weather rather than

wait until it is cooler as had been

suggested. So I guess some folks like

to work when it is hot outside.

We have asked for delivery of the

new fitness center equipment and

about the time you are reading this it

should be here.

Three consultants were interviewed

for the fitness center project. One

vendor dropped out of the bidding a

few days later. The Board chose the

low bidder, Rider Levett Bucknall.

(RLB), pending clarification

concerning the scope of work. Their

bid is $9950.

Board member Al Lehman is no

longer the treasurer of the

Corporation. The Board has asked Bill

Griggs to step in as treasurer. Bill is

pondering this as of this writing. Bill

would not be a Board member and

needs a clarification of his exact

duties.

The Boys and Girls Club sent us a

thank you for the donation in May in

the amount of $987.86. The funds

were raised from the recycling of

paper, cardboard and cans. I

understand we can now recycle

plastics.

Soroptimist International of Gold

Canyon asked us to use the

Superstition Center for a fundraiser in

November. The Board granted their

permission provided Glenda can

schedule the event. A resident, Joan

Archer, pointed out that the hall gets

heavy usage from our homeowners in

November. It has been pointed out that

the Board needs to settle on a firm

policy concerning charitable use of our

facilities. Do we charge a small fee?

What is our policy concerning the sale

of alcohol? Should we allow it?

I have been informed that I misspoke

in the May issue when I said that the

new sound system would eliminate

feedback. As we found out at the July

meeting this is not so. The new system

does lessen the feedback when it does

occur.

ACTIVITY PLANNING 2011-2012

“More people mean more

government representation in Pinal

County's future, but officials say they

need more public input to determine

what expanded representation will look

like.As they carve out new supervisor

districts, planners want to know public

sentiment on questions such as: Should

cities stay within one district or be

divided? Does it matter if districts are

heavily partisan?

In Arizona, counties with 200,000 or

more people must be represented by

five district supervisors. Pinal County

now has more than 375,000 residents,

up from 179,727 people in 2000.” If

interested in having your voice heard,

go to

www.surveymonkey.com/s/ZPJ796W

Note for those who participate;

When I filled out the survey, I chose not

to answer some of questions that I

believed were not relevant and I took

full advantage of the comment field and

it accepted my survey. So it is not an all

or nothing participation and they

welcomed your comments….. Pam

Burks, resident of MBV.

Peggy MalsomSometimes it’s cool to be a part of

something bigger than yourself; to be a

part of history. How often have your read

someone else’s story only to have it

trigger a memory of your own? The

Mountaineer can’t profile everyone who

deserves it, but this is your chance.

Arizona is celebrating its Centennial

culminating with its statehood celebration

February 14, 2012. Please help us help

you be a part of that by sharing your

Arizona story in the Mountaineer.

We would like to collect and print as

many as 100 Arizona stories from MBV

residents. Now here’s all you need to do.

Write a short paragraph (that’s all) about

your Arizona story. Here are some ideas

to get you started:

• Coming to Arizona

• Living in Arizona

• Why you love Arizona

• A funny thing happened to you in or

on your way to Arizona

• A not so funny thing happened to you

• Your favorite place in Arizona

• Your favorite vacation in Arizona

• Your best Arizona memory

• Your favorite Arizona moment

• Meeting a famous/infamous AZ person

• Your biggest surprise about Arizona

• Your biggest regret about Arizona

• Did you strike it rich or go broke in or

on the way to Arizona

In other words, tell us one thing of

interest in one paragraph about your

Arizona experience. What’s on your

Arizona bucket list? Remember your first

Arizona spring when everything burst

into blossom? Tell us about it and

become a part of celebrating Arizona’s

Centennial. Do it now so stories can start

appearing in the September issue. Please

keep it short so we can include them all

and send to [email protected]. or just

drop it off at the desk in the Activity

Office.. Here’s an example of the type of

thing we are looking for:

A Cold Welcome to Sunny ArizonaWhen you think of Arizona the first

thing that pops into your mind isn’tnecessarily a blizzard. But that was ourexperience. We got the call from BoyceThompson Arboretum State Park outsideSuperior asking us to come there asvolunteer resident hosts. We drove infrom the east via Globe. ApproachingTop of the World we were hit with ablinding blizzard. This is sunny Arizona? As we pulled into BTA the snow turnedinto a torrential rain. The next morningwe awoke in our ownpersonal gardenparadise. It was oursurprising indoctrinationto the diversity of thisbeautiful state we nowcall home…… Dennisand Peggy Malsom.

PINOCHLEMountainBrook

residents have three

weekly opportunities to

play organized pinochle. Each

group meets in the Sunset Room.

Women play at 1 pm each Tuesday,

double deck at 6:30 each Wednesday,

and the traditional pass-three-cards

group meets at 7 pm each Thursday.

Three Thursday evening players

recently achieved 600+ scores. Topping

the list was Marilyn Wilson with 657.

The other two were Howie Gehman,

617 and Rich Huseman, 615.

Newcomers are always welcome.

Advance signup is not needed; just

show up by about ten minutes before

the scheduled time of play. That helps

those in charge of setup. You will find a

cordial group of folks who will help you

understand our rules of play.

Your life is unique. There are no two

people alike and no two have lived as you

have. Your children and grandchildren and

unborn great grandchildren would love to

know what your life was like from the

changes in technology, the games we

played as youngsters, and your own

personal struggles.

Wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to

easily write your life story? So where do

you begin? I’ll bet you think you need to be

a professional writer to write your story.

That is NOT TRUE. No prior writing

experience is necessary.

This year Barb Hofmeister will be

teaching two classes on this very subject

Writing the Story of Your Life 101 is the

beginning class and you will be amazed at

how fast your story flows. This class will

begin on Monday, October 3 from 1 to 3

p.m. in the Mesquite Room and will

continue every Monday for 9 weeks. There

is a one time charge of $35.00 which

covers the cost of your text book. Sign up

in the office

Writing the Story of Your Life 201 is the

advanced class and will also begin on

October 3 in the

Mesquite room

but the time for

this class will be

3 to 5p.m. The

prerequisite for

this class is that

you must have

attended one of

Barb's classes before. The charge for this

class is only $20 to cover the cost of hand

outs. There will be no class on October 24

due to a previous commitment for the

Mesquite room. Sign up in the office.

If Monday is not a good day for you feel

free to register for one of the other classes

which are also set to begin the first week of

October. The following classes are all the

beginner class.

Wednesday, October 5, 1:30 to 3:30 at

Superstition Foothills Baptist Church on

Kings Ranch Rd.

Thursday, October 7, 1:00 to 3:00 at

Central Arizona Lifelong Learners in AJ.

The cost for this class will be a little more

than the above classes but I don't know

how much yet. This class is only 7 weeks

long ending on Nov. 17. To register call

Joel at CALL. 480-677-7707

Barb Hofmeister has been teaching Life

Story Writing Classes for years here at

MBV and around the valley. She has

already helped hundreds of people write

their stories and she can help you. It is fun

and easy.

Each class is limited to the first 20 who

register. Call Barb Hofmeister for more

information (480-288-9745) or email her at

Helping Hands is a network of

dedicated volunteers in MountainBrook

Village. Our purpose is to help provide,

through volunteer effort, short-term

support for home bound residents. In

particular, those folks who have no one at

home to help, no family nearby or only a

small network of older friends who might

be able to help. When all else fails,

Helping hands tries to be available to the

above while searching for a more

permanent means of being able to

maintain a quality of life within the home.

Transportation Assistance provides

transportation to doctors, dentists ,

pharmacy or grocery shopping. Shopping

Assistance is designed to help you with

grocery shopping at Basha’s or picking up

prescriptions at Walgreens or Basha’s.

Home Assistance is to provide you with

some “friendly visiting” by a volunteer or

to sit with a spouse so he or she can run

errands. Call Check is for the client to

call in and let the coordinator know that

they are up and about for the day as well

as their general well being. Highly

recommended for anyone living in their

home by themselves!

Equipment Loan is for those of you

who need to borrow medical or infant

/child care equipment. Please check with

the Activity office. Several residents

have canes, crutches, wheelchairs,

walkers, high rise toilet seats and

commodes. There are also limited

infant/child care equipment for the

visiting grandchildren. If you have any

equipment you are willing to store in your

home and share with your neighbors

please call Loretta Milton.

For further information about Helping

Hands or becoming a volunteer, please

call Loretta Milton 480-474-9958 and

leave a message. Remember to take the

time to be good to yourself as well as

others.

SEASONAL SAFETY; As the

seasons change, so may the

environmental exposures. We need to be

prepared and understand what hazards

there are during seasonal changes.

Rain events and Lightning Storms;

Whether you are at home or at work

beware of your surroundings when it is

probable that a storm will move into the

area. During a lightning storm, seek

shelter inside a building or vehicle. While

inside a vehicle, make every effort not to

contact anything that is metal. Be sure to

communicate with your friends and co-

workers if they may be at risk for

exposure to the dangerous weather. Be

cautious of being in low areas (i.e.

washes, creek beds, etc...) during rain

storms. Even if it isn’t raining hard, these

areas may collect water quickly and you

may find yourself in a flooded dangerous

situation.

If you have gutters on your home or

work buildings, be sure to clear them out

if debris is collecting in them and

preventing them from draining. If they

are full of water, over time the supports

may weaken and cause them to fall down

possibly injuring anyone standing

underneath.

Insects and creatures; Bees and

other insects may be more present in

certain areas with warmer temperatures.

Store foods and liquids away from areas

you will be enjoying the outdoors or

working as these tend to attract insects.

Brush and wood piles also make good

nests for insects and small creatures. If

you are performing spring cleaning be

sure to wear gloves and long sleeves to

prevent skin contact from unexpected

encounters with them. Know what

dangerous insects and arachnids exist

where you live as some can be poisonous

and/or deadly if

you are stung or

bitten by one.
