CROSSING THE BAR Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1808-1892)

This poem "came in a moment" to Tennyson two years before his death. Later, a few days before he died, he asked his son ta see that the poem was placed last in all editions of his poetry.

Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me!

And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam,

When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark!

And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark;

For though from out our bourn of time and place The flood may bear me far,

I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar.

As here I sit in the window sill And watch the scurrying rain

The little raindrops seem to fill The entire window pane.

I love the rain and the pitter pat So peaceful and so calm

They seem to be there so suddenly And then they are gone. And so are the people in this life

They are there and then they are gone . . But the Lord knows best when to take

And we must not fret or complain But be ever ready and watching

know where You are going, and how can we know the way?" Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:1-6).

But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, con-cerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have not hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord that we who are alive and remain until the coming/of

And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we· who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words (1 Thessalonians 4: 13-18).

Prayer: Oh, Lord, You fashioned us while we were yet in our mothers' womb. You have provided for us, and You have guided us through this journey of life. Now we are faced with the reality of death, for our loved one has come to the end of life. So, even now, we put our trust in You. Give us comfort in our sorrow. Help us to focus on You, on the eternity You offer when we follow You. In Jesus' name we ptay these things, An1en.

Grace Greater than Our Sin

Marvelous grace of our loving Lord, Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt, Younder on Calvary's mount out-poured, There where the blood of the Lamb was spilt.

Refrain: Grace, Grace, God's grace, Grace that will pardon and cleanse within; Grace, Grace, God's grace, Grace that is greater than all our sin.

Dark is the stain that we cannot hide, What can avail to wash it away? Look! there is flowing a crimson tide; Whiter than snow you may be today.

Refrain

Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace, Freely bestowed on all who believe; You that are longing to see His face, Will you this moment His grace receive?

All the way my Saviour leads me; What have I to ask beside? Can I doubt His tender mercy, Who thro' life has been my guide? Heav'nly peace divinest comfort, Here by faith in Him to dwell! For I know whate'er befall me, Jesus doeth all things well; For I know whate' er befall me, Jesus doeth all things well.

All the way my Savior leads me, Cheers each winding path I tread, Gives me grace for ev'ry trial, Feeds me with the living bread: Tho' my weary steps may falter, And my soul a-thirst may be, Gushing from the Rock before me, Lo! a spring of joy I see; Gushing from the Rock before me, Lo! a spring of joy I see.

All the way my Saviour leads me; Oh, the fullness of His love! Perfect rest to me is promis' d In my Father's house above: When my spirit, cloth' d immortal, Wings its flight to realms of day, This my song thro' endless ages: Jesus led me all the way; This my song thro' endless ages: Jesus led me all the way.

Although it is supremely difficult to watch the health

of someone so close to me fade, I am quite grateful that it

afforded me the opportunity and sense of urgency

necessary to express to him explicitly what he has meant

to not only myself and my present family, but to the Pitts

Family yet to come.

In all the years I've known him, PaPaw has meant

many things to me, but he has always been,

predominantly, the personification of complete moral

certainty. As loving, patient, and kind as he has always

been with not only me but everyone, he has always had

an unquestionable air of what is right. Even in my youth,

with all the disdain for what is traditional and constant

that youth implies, I always knew he was right.

Though he is no longer physically present with me,

I can say that I have, in all certainty, heard his voice in the

past several days. I do not say that in a metaphorical

sense, nor in an attempt to console myself somehow in

his loss. He remains very comforting and very constant.

Like everyone who passes from our lives and for

whose voice, at times, we long to hear with our ears, we

know that we still hear them on another level less

superficial and primitive than a vibrating ear drum. I hear

him more clearly than ever before, and my conscience

now has a face.
